Ted Kennedy Diagnosed With Malignant Brain Tumor

Doctors for the Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy say tests conducted after he suffered a seizure this weekend show a malignant tumor in his left parietal lobe. His treatment has not been determined yet, but the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy.

The 76-year-old senator has been hospitalized in Boston. His wife and children have made no public statements, though the Senator is reported to be in good spirits and is resting comfortably.

How Have You Been Touched by Breast Cancer?

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I have been hearing a lot about this disease. Of course my favorite thing to hear are the stories from survivors - we all need to hear that whisper of hope in our ears, since so many women are touched by breast cancer.

It's important to share all our stories with other women to give us a sense of community and strength. Whether you have been diagnosed with breast cancer yourself, or a family member or friend has been, I'm sure most of us know someone who has been affected by this disease. It's for those women that we continue our fight against breast cancer.

What's Ailing You? SelfMD

The internet is one of those places where you can find a lot of information about anything really, but for looking up health problems you want more of a reference than Joe Schmoe's Health Blog.

SelfMD.com is a great new tool for self diagnosis online. Basically you go through a series of questions and answers and then SelfMD gives you a few options on what could be ailing you based on likeliness. The questions are basically yes or no and the diagnosis is fairly easy to read (i.e., not done in crazy doctor jargon).

Keep in mind that SelfMD is just a reference tool (a quick way to educate yourself) and if something seems not right, you should always see a doctor.

It's a position that no happily pregnant woman would ever want to be in, but the reality is that some couples must decide whether their child lives or dies. A recent MSNBC report on perinatal hospices, which support families who have been given a terminal prenatal diagnosis said:

As the number of pregnant women being routinely screened has risen, so have dire diagnoses before birth. Only 15 years ago, prenatal screenings could detect less than a dozen conditions, while now it's possible to test for hundreds, ranging from mild forms of hearing loss to deadly Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

But the paradox of modern medicine is that knowing doesn’t always mean the outcome will be better. Sometimes you can just see death coming from a long way off.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. His spokesman issued a statement saying:

"The condition is in its very early stages. Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year."

The news follows Andrew's announcement earlier this month about his plans for Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the Opera, which will open in London and on Broadway in 2010.

Our thoughts are with Andrew and his family.

House Rundown, "Known Unknowns"

Finally, after a two-week break and a World Series, House is back! And lucky for us, the writers packed in several juicy plot points to make up for the hiatus. This week's case involves a young teenybopper with an ego and compulsive lying streak to boot. Sounds intriguing, but personally, I was more wrapped up in all of the personal drama going on with House and a certain fellow female doctor.

Ready to cover the highlights? There's a major twist with a big reveal, so prepare for some spoilers when you read more.

Right off the bat, the sexual tension between Cuddy and House is turned on full volume, what with Cuddy's low-cut shirt and House's leering looks. I found it to be a bit over the top, but I still have to give Cuddy props for this awesome comeback after House references her breasts as "Patty" and "Selma": "I feel bad I haven't named your testicles." Touche, Cuddy. Although, I sort of feel like she wears those revealing clothes for House, don't you?
I knew this episode had to be good when I heard it involved a Wilson and House road trip and an '80s party, but House in an 1880's costume walking among guys in Devo hats is brilliant. And then, when things can't get any better, he dances with a Flashdance Cuddy to "Time After Time" and finally admits to her that he's always had feelings for her. What a fantastic scene! That is, until she walks out.
Another high point of the evening for me: When House drugs a pants-less Wilson to keep him from giving a potentially career-ruining speech on euthanasia. Now, that's a solid friend. Were you shocked over Wilson's confession of delivering euthanasia himself? We always think that House is the one with all the secrets, but I guess Wilson isn't 100 percent on the up and up either.
I definitely laughed when Wilson uses the term "friend-zoned" while talking about Cuddy. House is surprisingly open about his feelings for her instead of his usual denial, which I think is nice to see - do you agree? Or is House becoming too soft?
Surprise! Were you taken aback by Lucas? (Lucas is the private investigator that Cuddy hired last season.) When House goes to Cuddy's room to prove to her that she can "count" on him (as she puts it), Lucas is there playing with her baby daughter. I think House and I both had the same look when that happened - huh??!
Didn't this episode's diagnosis seem even more roundabout than usual? The doctors came across completely clueless - not to mention they did extra damage by giving the patient supplements. Perhaps it's just because House wasn't on the premises to pull the strings.
Lucas's mention of House's sex hallucination with Cuddy = painfully awkward. But I don't think Cuddy is over House. Did you look at her face?!
We can all breathe a sigh of relief, because Chase finally breaks down and tells Cameron the truth about the murder of Dibala. She's obviously stunned, but we didn't get her response before the episode ends. We already know that she's leaving the show, but what do you think will happen between them next week?

You Asked: I Can't Get Over My Herpes Diagnosis

Dear Sugar,

Recently I was diagnosed with genital herpes. I didn't know that I had ever been exposed to it, and then an ex-boyfriend called to tell me that he was diagnosed seven months ago. I felt very betrayed and shocked that he waited so long to tell me. I haven't slept with anyone else, but learning this news has me totally devastated. I've been having a hard time moving forward, and I'm struggling with the thought that my life is essentially over. I'm just now starting to come to terms with the diagnosis, but my biggest fear is how and when I tell someone who I am interested in. I have gone on a couple of dates with a guy I really like, but I completely panic at the idea of having to tell him the news. I'm just terrified. Do you have any advice?

Your feelings of shock, betrayal, and sadness are all completely normal. To learn you'll have to deal with a lifelong disease, no matter how manageable, is very scary and will take some time to process. But Danielle, your life is not over. You are very much the same person you were before this diagnosis and can live just as fulfilling a life, both emotionally and sexually.

But it's true, part of the burden you'll have to deal with is sharing this very private information with any potential sexual partners. As far as timing, I would wait until you've moved beyond the casual dating point; you want to be able to trust and confide in him. Before you do, I think it's important that you recognize that having this disease doesn't define you. You have to accept yourself before you can expect others to.

While there is always some shame associated with STIs, remember that you're not guilty of anything, so don't divulge this info as if it's a confession, but rather approach it as a fact. Be honest with him, and ask him to return the favor by telling you his concerns. Openly discuss the risks together and go from there. You can't control his reaction, so if it's not what you were hoping for, then don't let it feel like a reflection of your worth. The more comfortable you become with this, the more at ease others will feel when you discuss it. Good luck!

Information

Abdominal pain can represent many different types of problems besides a simple stomachache. It can even be due to pain in the pelvis (such as menstrual cramps), back (such as kidney stones), or chest (such as a heart attack or heartburn).

Your doctor will ask you specific questions to help determine the cause of your abdominal pain:

What makes it feel worse?
What makes it feel better?
When did it begin?
How long does it last when you have it?
Is the pain constant or does it come and go?
What does the pain feel like? Is it sharp, dull, or crampy?
Do you also have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or blood in your stool?

Two common conditions that you may worry about if you have abdominal pain are appendicitis or an ulcer.

An inflamed appendix generally starts with pain in the center of the abdomen, around the belly button, followed by loss of appetite, nausea, and fever. As appendicitis worsens, the pain generally moves to the right lower abdomen. An inflamed appendix can rupture and should be treated as a medical emergency.

Ulcers often produce pain in the upper, central abdomen, a few hours after eating or during the night. Taking antacids may relieve the pain. The risks from an ulcer include bleeding or rupture.

Go to your the hospital emergency room or call your local emergency services number (such as 911) if:

Your pain is severe, sudden and sharp
You have a fever along with your pain
You are vomiting blood or have bloody diarrhea
You have a rigid, hard abdomen that is tender to touch
You are unable to pass stool, especially if you are also vomiting
You have chest, neck, or shoulder pain
You are dizzy or light-headed

Call your doctor if:

You have nausea and lack of appetite.
You have yellowing of your eyes or skin.
You have bloating for more than 2 days.
You have diarrhea for more than 5 days, or if an infant or child has had diarrhea for 2 days or vomiting for 12 hours. (Call right away if a baby under 3 months old has diarrhea or vomiting.)
You have had abdominal discomfort for more than one week.
You have burning with urination or you are urinating more often than usual.
You have painful menstrual periods.
You have abdominal pain and may be pregnant.
Your pain gets worse when you take antacids or eat something.
You are unintentionally losing weight.
