Come Party With Me: Annabelle's Birthday - Menu

FabSugar's delightful mother has volunteered to do the food for Annabelle's birthday party. Fab has requested a classic barbecue and some dog-friendly dishes. To get things started FabMommie will serve her excellent shrimp and pea salad. I tried it at the Bedazzle Bonanza and it's insanely scrumptious. Next she'll make two kinds of sliders: one for the people guests and another for the dogs in attendance. The first is an outside-in white cheddar cheese slider. The second is a combination of ground meat, cooked rice, and yogurt.

Before you serve this recipe, be sure to consult your vet and find out if the ingredients are appropriate for your pooch. Does this menu sound interesting? Get the recipes now.

She's only a baby, but Katie has a serious problem. The temptation to nosh on kibble has consumed her appetite, her curiosity, and her exploratory crawling time. Will Katie be saved before it's too late? Watch the intervention unfold...

Come Paw-ty With Me: Dog Birthday - Menu (Dog Food)

At a poochie party, your dog is the guest of honor, so creating a bunch of pet friendly food is a great way to pamper your pup. Special appetizers that are vet approved are excellent options. At Molly's pug Oliver's first birthday party, I'll be serving up a picnic style meal for the people and scooby snacks for the doggies. Olive oil and bacon truffles and a dog friendly pate on toast, will fill the dogs up after a roaring round of fetch. No birthday party is complete without a cake and Oliver's will be made naturally sweet, colorful, and flavorful: a peanut butter carrot cake. Interested in making these dog food recipes? All you have to do is read more

Olive Oil and Bacon Truffles
From Jessica Gorman

1/2 pound bacon
3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup beef broth
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Preheat the oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with foil.

In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp, about 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain, reserving the grease. Let the bacon cool slightly, then crumble.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal and crumbled bacon.

In a large measuring cup, stir together 1 1/3 cups warm water and the broth and pour into the dry ingredients. Add the oil and stir together to form a loose dough. Knead on a work surface until smooth.

Divide the dough into balls of the appropriate size for your dog (about 1 inch for large dogs and 1/2 inch for small dogs) and set on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with the reserved bacon grease.

Bake until firm to the touch, 35 to 45 minutes. Let cool completely.

Makes about 2 1/2 pounds.

Print recipe with images | without images

Pooch Pâté on Toast Points
From Rachel Ray

2 cups chicken broth
1 fresh or dried bay leaf
2 fresh rosemary sprigs
4 fresh thyme sprigs
A few flat-leaf parsley stems
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 carrot, peeled and thinly sliced
6 to 8 slices whole grain bread- toasted, lightly buttered and cut into triangles

In a deep, medium skillet, bring the chicken broth and 1 cup water to a boil.

Reduce the heat to a simmer and add the bay leaf. Using a 10-inch-long piece of kitchen string, tie the rosemary, thyme and parsley stems into a bundle. Tie the end of the string to the skillet handle and drop the herbs into the broth.

Add the chicken and carrot and simmer over medium heat until the chicken is cooked through and the carrots are tender, about 15 minutes. Discard the herb bundle and bay leaf.

Reserve a ladle of broth and, using a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken and carrots to a bowl and let cool for a few minutes.

Transfer the chicken mixture to a food processor along with the reserved broth and pulse to form a pâté-like consistency. Serve on toast points.

Makes about 2 cups.

Print recipe with images | without images

1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg
1 medium container of cottage cheese

Mix flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients.

Pour into greased 8" round cake pan and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Let cool.

Puree cottage cheese in blender for icing. Decorate with more peanut butter and carrots.

Do You Feed Your Dog People Food?

I have the most adorable little cocker spaniel, and even though I love her very much, I will not feed her people food - not even when Lacey rests her little face on my lap during dinner in an attempt to cute me into it. I just don't believe in giving dogs people food in any way shape or form. Be it scraps, leftovers, or old bones, I just don't do it. The first dog I ever loved, Adam, died when I was eight years old due to complications related to the digestion of people food. His stomach could not handle it and we had to put him to sleep. Everyone has a personal opinion on what their dog can and cannot digest correctly.

I know a girl who gives her dog, Darko, a doggie biscuit covered in whipped cream as a daily treat. Rachael Ray, a known dog lover, features a canine/people friendly meal each month in her magazine, Everyday With Rachael Ray. My aunt gives her dog, Mocha, tiny pieces of leftover meat about once a week for an extra source of protein. A friend's boyfriend liberally feeds his dog, Simba, people food but regularly brushes Simba's teeth. What about you reader? Do you share human food with man's best friend?

Don't Feed Dog Food to a Cat!

If you're lucky enough to have a doggie and a kitty in your furry family, you may run into problems with pets trying to make sneaky snacks out of the other one's yums. North has never sniffed cat food, but I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to take a nibble. Many cats are more discerning than that, but there is a necessary ingredient in their food that they cannot get in dog food – and kitties fed a steady diet of dog food may develop retinal degeneration and go blind. If you're curious what the missing nutrient is, read more.

Cats need the amino acid taurine, which is not present in dog food. In addition to preventing the blindness-causing disease called feline central retinal degeneration, it helps to combat dilated cardiomyopathy (a failure of the heart muscle when the heart tissue swells to try to meet the animal's circulatory needs), as well as being very significant in helping cats carry babies to term.

It's believed that wild cats got taurine from their diet of rodents, who have significant levels of this substance in their bodies. Kitties are different from other animals in that they cannot make enough taurine internally to meet their needs, and they must have enough taurine supplied to them in their food. Be certain to check the amounts of this on your cat food label and, if you feed a raw diet, purchase it as a supplement.

Since Rachael Ray is a big fan of making her own fresh food to feed her baby Isaboo and features pet friendly recipes in her magazine and on her website, I guess it was only a matter of time before she took the plunge into the pet food business!

Dubbed Nutrish, her specialty line of dog food is filled with 100 percent natural ingredients like her famous EVOO, real beef, chicken, veggies, oatmeal, vitamin E, calcium, and absolutely no byproducts. And what's better, a portion of the proceeds go to Rachael's Rescue, a nonprofit organization she founded to help animals in need. Now that's something I can get behind! And, not to be left out, her specialty line of cat food is coming soon!

Source

Your Political Leanings May Determine What's on Your Plate

Everyone says that you are what you eat. But could your political party affiliation be the driver of what goes on your plate, too? That's what food trend analyst Phil Lempert (of koodie fame) is arguing. Examining 2009 data from Hunch, he found conservatives opt for "mainstream, comfort food staples," while liberals are likely to gravitate toward "international and exotic cuisines."

According to Lempert, conservatives correlated with foods like pizza, macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter and jelly for lunch, plus fried chicken, meatloaf, and steak for dinner, with Italian food being the cuisine of choice.

Liberals, on the other hand, preferred Asian: Thai and Indian for lunch, and veggie burgers and green curry for supper. His findings indicate they also tend to make more nutritionally sound choices, such as eating vegetables more often and fast food less frequently, and making dishes from scratch.

Those looking to toe the bipartisan line should stick to mutually-loved foods such as hot dogs, bacon double cheeseburgers, ice cream sans sprinkles, romaine lettuce, and salt on a margarita glass. Do these findings line up correctly with your political leanings?

Mind Your Manners at the (Doggie) Table

I don't even let North on my bed, let alone join me at the dining table. But now he can practice his table manners with his own Wooden Dog Dining Table ($40).

Unlike most food risers I've seen, this table adjusts to five different heights to fit your doggie (or kitty!) perfectly at any stage. It's been shown that raising your dogs' food and water bowls can aid digestion, and when paired up with a Portion Pacer, your pup will not only slow down his eating habits, but he'll savor his food like a proper pup.

Just in Time For Summer: CommuteMate's Pet Food Holder

If you're taking off for a quick weekend trip and need a handy holder to pack Fido's food in, check out this CommuteMate Portable Food Storage Container ($15) - not only does it neatly pack away kibble, but comes apart so you can also have water, a drinking bowl and a separate food bowl ready to go at a moment's notice.

Although I'm not one for camping (unless sleeping in a fully stocked RV is considered roughing it), but I can imagine that this would be perfect for those types of getaways, as well as an emergency food supply to keep in your car, just in case you need it on short road trips.
