Fall Coat Trends: Dress Coats

Welcome to day 4 of our week-long look at coat trends for Fall 2006. (To read yesterday's installment, click here.) Today’s spotlight: dress coats. These feminine shapes warm like coats but fit dresses, with full swingy "skirts," cinched waists, and delicate collars. Trend Alert: Coat Dress

Nicky Hilton is ofter first with directional trend pieces and this week she was spotted at the 'Bra Boys' premiere working the coat dress. Nicky opted for a houndstooth coat dress which she teamed with PVC leggings (Fergie, take note!) and funky heels.

Admittedly, a coat dress is harder to pull off than say a jumper dress as it is much more structured and needs to be worn with the right items. For example, when wearing the coat dress you do not want to end up looking like you forgot to take off your coat because it is too cold etc. This rule also means that you cannot wear a coat you already have with nothing but a pair of tights!

Coat dresses are usually very structured, maybe with emphasis around the waist (as seen on Nicky). You also need to keep all other aspects of the outfit quite simple so opt for plain accessories and leggings or tights. See some examples below.

Coat Dress: Love it or Hate it?

Just in case you're a member of a religious group that requires you to not only cover every inch of your body, but also to do it in designer fashions, perhaps this one is for you.

Neiman Marcus is showing this eskandar coat dress and shirt dress as separates for $930 and $342, respectively.

Rihanna's Schedule Is Booked, Including New Year's

Rihanna was out and about for another hectic day of promoting Rated R in NYC yesterday. First up was a stop by the radio station Hot 97 in a white blazer, before she put on her black coat for lunch at her usual spot, Da Silvano. The next item on her agenda was an appearance on The Late Show in yet another dark ensemble. She was on hand to perform "Russian Roulette" - check out the video after the jump.

Rihanna wound up her day in a sparkly gold dress for her record release party at the Supper Club. She was joined by both Jay-Z and recent birthday boy Diddy, who shared with Yum his secrets to a successful bash. Ashley Greene also paid a visit after her own Maxim party, and she was spotted leaving around the same time as Rihanna headed home in a red outfit. The hectic scheduling isn't going to slow down for Rihanna anytime soon, as she's just signed a deal to perform in Abu Dhabi on New Year's for half a million dollars.

The Mighty Boosh Bring a Merry Christmas to Stella McCartney

Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt and the rest of The Mighty Boosh cast helped Stella McCartney switch on the Christmas lights at her London store last night! Dressed in drag, Noel and Julian performed songs with the rest of their Boosh band, but - as you can tell - they weren't wearing Stella's clothing line. The woman of the night was, however. Stella stepped out in leggings featuring a lace insert and a satin coat, while Louise Redknapp wore a sparkly body suit that showed onlookers more than they bargained for under the camera lights! Louise was accompanied by her hubby Jamie, and other guests included Stella's sister Mary, and Twiggy.

Matthew, Alexa and Ed Attend the International Emmys!

Graham Norton hosted the 2009 International Emmy Awards at the New York Hilton Hotel last night, where Brits won five awards! Ben Whishaw and Julie Walters both won acting awards, but neither attended. However there were some fab British guests in the shape of Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick - who looked handsome as ever, and Matthew Rhys, who was also looking dashing in his suit. Alexa Chung shrugged off her leopard print coat to pose in her one shouldered dress for the photographers, still in the city to host her daily MTV show!

Tom Works Night and Day While Suri Shops With Katie

Katie Holmes left Long Island, where she had been working on The Romantics and headed into NYC for a weekend with Suri. The girls were out to see The Lion King on Friday night, with little Suri looking sleepy as they left the theater together. Saturday they bundled up in coats for a few long walks with Katie's mom, and Suri showed off her red dress from the children's Holmes and Yang and green backpack. Isabella Cruise joined them yesterday for a trip to the ballet, when Suri broke out a pair of bright rain boots despite the sunny day.

Tom, meanwhile, is still in Austria filming Knight and Day. His Friday night was a late one, as he took to a roof to film a dramatic looking action scene with Cameron Diaz. They continued on into Saturday with their work, though Cameron took the evening off to attend a Mozart recital at a local church with their costar Paul Dano.

Sexiest Man Alive Johnny Depp Celebrates Tim Burton in NYC

The work of Tim Burton is being celebrated at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in a brand new exhibition that launched last night, and a selection of stars turned out to take a look at the collection. Tim Burton and his wife Helena Bonham Carter attended and posed for photos with Tim's buddy Johnny Depp, who was looking gorgeous as always! His sexiness has been verified by People magazine who have named him sexiest man alive! Do you agree? New Moon's Ashley Greene took a night off from promotion and checked out the exhibition, as did Rose Byrne who was also dressed in black. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen also attended the event, wearing big coats and carrying matching bags - check out the colourful streaks in Ashley's hair! Other guests included Patti Smith and Brooke Shields!

Trend Alert: The Trench Dress

I've always been a fan of Ginnifer Goodwin's sleek style. She manages to give simple pieces a unique twist. Case in point: her Camilla and Marc silk trench dress. Wearing her jacket as a dress alludes to mystery. Is she or isn't she wearing something underneath? Only the wearer remains the wiser.

The trick to pulling this off is wearing a thinner trench made out of silk, satin, or a light cotton. That way, it looks more like a dress, and less like a coat. There are also a couple of "real" trench dresses available for those who don't like drafts. Me? I already own a light cotton trench, so layering it with a thin slip should do the trick.

The Pros and Cons of Buying Topshop Online

I always knew they existed - I have seen their chic dresses, sexy heels and cool tops. I am talking about Topshop. I got even more excited when I found out they opened a store in NYC, although I live in Denver, Colorado. I must say, things come around a lot slower around here, and don't get me wrong, there are nice stores here, but it's not to the point where they satisfy my fashion cravings.

This is when the beauty of online shopping comes in handy. My friend Sophie loves to shop online. She says that it's the best because she can buy things anytime, even at two in the morning, not have to worry about driving to the mall, (and not finding anything at the mall!), and in most cases, there's no sales tax, a small shipping fee, and usually, the return and exchanges are easy.

I must say, I was never comfortable with buying clothes online. Shoes and bags, I'm OK with. With clothes, things are different simply because every brand has slightly different sizing and all. Topshop was no exception. It's from the UK, and I know sometimes the equivalent of those sizes can be confusing - look at H&M!

One day, as I was looking through tons of pictures as always - new trends, jackets and coats for Fall and Winter. And there it was. I fell in love with this striped knit jacket from Topshop. I looked at the price, and fell in love with it even more - it's only $80!

I had to go to the store - but wait, there is no Topshop here in Denver! As I envied those folks in NYC, I went online. I quickly navigated myself to look for the jacket and there it was! I want, I want! Pause. What is my size?

Suddenly, I was lost. I usually wear a 2 or 4, depending on the brand. I also have jackets and tops that run rather small or large. While all those thoughts kept going around my head, I looked up on the sizing chart. Hmm . . . I think I am 4, but I don't want it to be too tight since it's a knit jacket . . . oh well, let's just order 6 in case, and if it didn't fit, I'd just exchange it. Before placing an order, it suddenly dawned on me that in case this size didn't work out, I better check on the return policy. Just in case. I'm not sure if that was a sign of something, but I looked. And I discovered many things I did not know. At first, I did not know Topshop's merchandise all ship out from UK. Thus, $15 shipping charge makes sense. Then I realized another thing. What if I wanted to return or exchange something? Sure, you can either return it in person at their stores but that is not my option. According to their website, if you wanted to return or exchange an item, you have to ship it back to their UK warehouse at your own expense. Hmmm . . .

Now I'm determined to make my purchase more "oops wrong size" free. I certainly don't want to go through with shipping the item back and forth till I get it right. It's not only time consuming, but also could end up being costly. I carefully studied the sizing chart, I realized, I needed some real people's opinions. Of course, the chart gives you the idea to narrow down which size you could possibly be, but just in case, to double check it, I did my own research.

I googled the "Topshop sizing review" and voilà! There were a few out there, but one forum was particularly helpful - Facebook. People with the same problems come together and discuss the sizing. Some argue Topshop's sizing runs smaller. Others disagree.

In the end, I ended up getting a 6 - I figured if it's bigger rather than smaller, I could live with it. I haven't gotten the jacket just yet, because I just ordered yesterday, but I'll keep you posted on the sizing. I must say the forum, like the one Facebook, did help me tremendously, sometimes a sizing chart won't do justice. Real people's opinions really do count.

So will I shop online again? Yeah, sure. But do some research beforehand, and read the fine print in case you don't like it, or it's too small or too big, or it's not what I thought it would be, or whatever the reason may be. As for me, for now, I'm waiting and hoping that all the research and reading will pay off.
