Bridesmaid Dresses You'll Want to Wear (Again and Again)

Just because you have the word bridesmaid attached to your name for the next couple months doesn't mean you have to dress tacky at your friend's wedding. We all know bridesmaid dresses have a tainted reputation but it's clearly warranted. I mean, who wants to walk around in ill-colored taffeta all night?

If the bride is your close friend or sister, suggest that the wedding party wear nontraditional frocks. Short, bright, floral . . . they will all set the tone for her Spring nuptials. Once you get the the green light, select a dress that will hint - not scream - bridesmaid, and one that will have guests commending, "she'll definitely be able to wear that dress again."

Color Me Inspired: I Love You, Man's Sunshiney Bride and Bridesmaids

This Spring, in the comedy I Love You, Man, we witnessed one of the happiest, liveliest colors a bridesmaid can wear. The maids in the movie wore Nanette Lepore's "Still Free" shift dresses, FYI. Appropriate for a garden, beach, or even indoor wedding (if the reception or party is outdoors), your bridesmaids will thank you. How can one stress on the big day when she's surrounded by chipper yellow best buds? I'm also an advocate of non-bridesmaids bridesmaid dresses for the supporting cast - sourcing a mid-range designer for wear-again cocktail dresses is the way to go. It's thoroughly modern and, again, your bridesmaids will be thankful. What do you think - are you as smitten with this sunshiney bride and her bridesmaids as I am?

OK, I know it's all about the bride on the big day. but that doesn't mean bridesmaids should get the shaft. You know what I mean. Why torture your closest friends with gaudy colors and rosettes when they can shine in Vera Wang's new bridesmaid collection? Thanks to Vera's vast selection of gorgeous gowns, bridesmaids can hold their heads high and wear their frocks with pride. The line, ranging from $180 to $300, includes decadent short and long styles made from jewel-toned satins, silks, and refined taffeta. My favorite has to be this modern Renee Satin Tiered Dress. Who ever said you can't wear bridesmaid dresses twice? Not Vera.

Dear Poll: How Many Times Have You Been a Bridesmaid?

The newest comedy starring Katherine Heigl, 27 Dresses, comes out in theaters today. The story revolves around Heigl's character, who has been a bridesmaid 27 times and is about to embark on her 28th for a wedding between the man of her dreams and her sister - ouch.

Needless to say, it got me thinking about that old familiar saying: always a bridesmaid, never a bride. While it's flattering to be asked to be a bridesmaid, it can be both disappointing and annoying to constantly be on the sidelines. I've been a bridesmaid a couple of times, but how many times have you?

On Our Radar: Lela Rose Bridesmaids

Funny. I just finished an extensive search helping my best friend find her - my - bridesmaid dresses. She put me in charge because, well, you know why. We just found them! We're going with J.Crew's silk taffeta cocktail dresses, but had timing been different, I may have suggested Lela Rose. The American designer of super femme, city-savvy clothes is delving into the bridesmaid market. Nary a pastel or petticoat in sight, Lela's dresses will come in jewel tone hues and modern silhouettes. One example is a crinkle chiffon dress with rosette details inspired by the First Daughter’s bridesmaids’ dresses. Shorter dresses will be $300 and the maximum will be $450 for full-length gowns. Also, Rose will continue her partnership with Payless and launch "The Unforgettable Moments by Lela Rose" dyeable shoe collection in December.

Simply Fab: Calypso Satin Convertible Wrap Dress

I've already been a bridesmaid one too many times in my life. Can you sense the lack of enthusiasm in my voice, er words? If my friends had let me wear this Calypso Satin Convertible Wrap Dress ($270), my outlook on bridesmaid fashion would be very different. What I love about it is that it can be worn eight different ways . . . or more, if you're super creative. As if that wasn't Fab enough, it's hand washable. Gorgeous and low-maintenance? Nice.

Dear Sugar,

I was asked to be a bridesmaid for a friend a year ago and since then I've started graduate school and, sadly, piled on some weight. Unfortunately we bought our bridesmaid dresses a year ago, preweight gain, when they were on sale at Ann Taylor. The wedding is coming up in two months and I'm worried I won't be able to lose enough weight to fit into the dress. What do I do if I can't? - Gained Weight Wednesday

Dear Gained Weight Wednesday,

You have two months so get on it sister! Stop eating junk food and start eating lean protein, whole grains, and a ton of veggies. Get to the gym every day and stop drinking alcohol until the wedding. If you've gained just too much weight to lose in such a short amount of time, call Anne Taylor and see if they can track down another dress for you in a bigger size. If that's not an option, get a referral for a seamstress and hopefully she'll be able to work some magic on your dress: let out some seams, add in some extra fabric, etc.

If all these options I've suggested won't work for your situation, I'd talk to the bride. Ask her if there's another girl in the wedding that you might be able to trade dresses with and as your last resort, ask her if you can buy a different dress in the same color and style that will match the other girls.

Whatever you do, don't leave it to the last minute - two months is still pretty far away so hopefully diet and exercise will do the trick! Good luck.
