Gear Review: Earth Exer-Fit Flip-Flops

I've told you about Earth shoes; the stylish and healthy shoe with negative heel technology, which means your toes are 3.7° higher than your heels. The idea is that shifting your weight slightly more to your heels offers health benefits - better breathing, straighter posture, stronger core muscles, tighter thighs, and calf toning. The slight incline, like walking up a not-so-steep hill, the negative heel helps you burn calories too. Earth shoes actually conducted a four-week study with 31 women, half of which walked 10,000 steps three times a week in Earth shoes, and half in regular shoes. In one month, the average fat percentage of the Earth shoes wearers decreased four times more than the non-Earth shoe wearers. While the data pool for the study wasn't large, the findings are pretty interesting.

These are by far one of the most comfortable summery flip-flops I've ever slipped on my feet. The Velcro strap across the top means you can tighten the shoe to fit snugly, ensuring that they won't slip off when you walk. They have excellent arch support (which is tough to find in a flip-flop), and the base of the shoe is made with Bio-Foam Cushioning, which means it molds to the shape of your foot. Similar to my experience wearing FitFlops, I didn't really feel my legs working more than usual, but I was impressed by the comfort of the thongs. Jessica Alba's Earth Boots

Jessica Alba has made it pretty clear that she's trying to stay fit during her pregnancy, but she's not only doing it with trips to the gym.

Recently, Alba has been spotted wearing Earth Shoes Lodge Boots ($162.95). In case you've never heard of them, Earth Shoes are designed to shift your weight back, which is supposed to help improve your posture and strengthen and tone your body while burning more calories. Plus, they're really comfortable - a major plus for an expecting mom-to-be. I've got to say that Jessica has managed to make these shoes look really cute. Buy them here.

Got Bunions?

Bunions! If you have them you know where they are. That bump on the joint growing just south of your big toe. While you might want to blame your shoes for your bunion, it would be more accurate to blame your parents (they are such excellent scape goats aren't they). Bunions are most often caused by "faulty foot" structure that is an inheritable trait. Certain foot types increase the risk of bunion growth, although ill-fitting shoes can and do worsen the pain, but they are actually caused by a change in your bone's structure. This causes your big toe to grow at an angle and bump into your second toe, instead of pointing straight. The bones in your foot go all out of alignment, which causes pain and that bump to form on the inside of your foot just below your big toe.

There are certain foot types, such as flat feet, that are more susceptible to developing bunions. Some pregnant women tend to develop bunions too, because hormones can loosen the ligaments in their feet, causing them to flatten.

Shoes do contribute to the pain of a bunion, by rubbing and pressing on the bone growth. So those pointy brown stilettos really are just adding to pain. High heels are terrible for bunions, because they push weight into your toes, cramming them even more. Standing on your feet for long periods of time can also aggravate symptoms.

Fit's Tips: If you are prone to bunions, try to wear shoes that have big toe boxes such as shoes made by Keen or Earth Shoes.
