Poll: Is Election 2008 Must-See TV?

The writers' strike is depriving us of scripted drama. Even so, New York Times columnist David Carr says the breakout television hit this season is the presidential election.

Carr wrote:

"January was supposed to be the month when the writers’ strike took its toll [...]. Instead, the primary season is serving as the backdrop for one of the most compelling runs of event television in years, creating the kind of chatter network marketers would kill for and spectacular ratings for cable news."

Your Two Cents: Are You Leaving Work Early to Vote Today?

Casting your vote for the next US president should be a priority today, and we can expect Election Day voting lines to be on the longer side this year. Here in California the polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m., so hopefully the long hours encourage everyone to get out and vote. Will you be leaving work early or taking time out of your day to vote?

What Do You Think Will Happen Tomorrow?

Polls indicate that Barack Obama is set to become the next president of the United States. But we all know that a lead in notoriously volatile polls only guarantees the opportunity to experience an embarrassing upset.

John McCain's path to the White House is narrow: he must win all the states Bush picked up in 2004, or capture a big enough Kerry state to make up for a loss. But thanks to a recent tightening in the polls, a McCain win appears in reach.

After almost two years of campaigning, a less-than-dramatic finish could be anticlimatic. If an extreme outcome is in store, do you think the 2008 election will end in a landslide like the 1936 election, when Franklin D. Roosevelt won 523 votes to Alf Landon's eight? Or will it be similar to the 2000 fiasco, which ended 36 days after election day?

Were You Contacted by Pollsters on Your Cellphone?

After an epic election season (I'm sure Citizen and Liberty are wanting a vacay right about now), we can look forward to a respite from "blocked" and "unknown" numbers coming in to our landlines and cell phones. Some of those calls may have been from campaign volunteers wanting you to get out the vote, a robo-caller listing off negative points about a certain candidate, or it could have been a pollster asking you who you were likely to vote for.

Previously, likely voter polls were taken mostly from land lines, but in this election, the accuracy of these polls has been argued since a vast number of Americans (myself included) use a cellular as their primary phone. This year, I was not contacted for these likely voter polls on my cell. Were you?

Would You Take Off Election Day?

Yesterday I got a friendly email from the Obama campaign asking me to take next Tuesday off. The campaign says it needs volunteers (no experience required) to make calls, knock on doors, and make sure voters get to the polls.

In many countries, election day is a holiday, or it falls on the weekend. But in 1845, Congress selected the Tuesday after the first Monday in November as the nationwide day for elections. Tuesday was chosen because farmers needed a day to travel to the polling place, a day to vote, and a day to get back. Factoring in the Lord's Day, that left Tuesday and Wednesday. Since Wednesday was market day, only Tuesday would work!

If it weren't for the 19th century agrarian society, Obama wouldn't have a need to ask volunteers to take a day off from work or school. Tell me - even on such short notice, would you take Nov. 4 off for your candidate?

Last night history was made when we elected Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. Yesterday we got a look at stars hitting the polls and there hasn't been a day in recent memory where we didn't have celebrities campaigning in some way - mostly for Barack Obama. Now that he's been elected and it sounds like the young voters finally came out in droves, what do you think - did the many celebrity endorsements, PSAs, ads, and blogs have an influence on the election?

Rock the Photo: The Polling Place Photo Project

The Polling Place Photo Project is a NYTimes experiment to document "the local voting experience" around the country. They have invited citizens to snap pictures of their polling places when they go in to cast their vote, and then submit them to the website.

Anyone can participate (all states, all political persuasions) - check their Resource List to find out what the law is regarding photography at polls in your state, and get to snapping. I can't wait to see the collection post-election (rhyme not intentional)!

30% of Voters Say They Might Change Their Minds, Could You?

Now that we know it's down to Barack Obama and John McCain, we still don't know who will be the next President. Polls show that 30 percent of voters could change their minds between now and election day.

The numbers suggest that Obama's Democratic base is a little less sure about supporting him. And, according to Rasmussen Reports, 56 percent of the uncommitted respondents are women. Want some more stats? Check out the poll.

Uncertainty surrounding Barack makes it appear that there may be a Hillary Clinton effect taking place. Some are even asking if her decision to remain in the race, after Obama appeared to have an insurmountable delegate lead, will place the historical blame for a possible Obama loss on Hillary.
