Happy Hour: Papa Doblé Daiquiri

At Spruce, an upscale bar and restaurant in San Francisco, I came across the papa doblé daiquiri on the bar menu and knew I had to order it. I love this drink for several reasons, and one of them is the legendary story behind it. The papa doblé was the signature drink of prolific writer Ernest Hemingway. Back in the '30s and '40s, he frequently ordered it at the El Floridita bar in Havana, Cuba. The cocktail isn't cloying - in fact, it isn't sweet at all - but it's smooth and easy to drink. Beware of impostor recipes, which will use cherry syrup in lieu of true, colorless, maraschino cherry liqueur. To learn how to make this famous concoction, read more.

Papa Doblé Daiquiri
From El Floridita in Havana, Cuba

Ingredients

2 oz. white rum
1 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
1/4 oz. maraschino liqueur
1 1/2 to 2 cups shaved ice

Directions

Combine all items in a blender and frappe until the drink is foaming.
Serve in a large cocktail glass, champagne saucer, or goblet.
Garnish with a slice of lime.

Serves 1.

Smith Magazine, inspired by a challenge Ernest Hemingway was once given to write his memoir in six words, has been inviting readers to do the same since 2006. I recently checked out their website and found the following six-word memoir quite poignant: "Paying off student loans with unemployment."

Have Cafe Novelists Replaced Boozin' Writers?

In the past, the writer's life was often a lush life. Many great American novelists - including Ernest Hemingway and John Cheever - were notorious drunks. In fact, according to an article by Tom Shone in the new issue of More Intelligent Life, five of America's seven Nobel literary laureates were alcoholics:

In America William Faulkner and Scott Fitzgerald were the Paris and Britney of their day, caught in the funhouse mirror of fame, their careers a vivid tabloid mash-up of hospitalizations and electroshock therapies.

Rehab wasn't something people did back in the '30s. Neither was recovery-centric memoir writing. When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote a story for Esquire chronicling his struggles, Hemingway told him to cast his "balls into the sea-if you have any balls left."

Ever since rehab went mainstream in the 1960s, Shone observes, the boozing writer stereotype is less typical. Both Cheever and Raymond Carver came out of rehab and kept writing; Stephen King got sober after an intervention. So where have all the overindulgent writers gone?

Dree Hemingway. You surely recognize her surname. This model-of-the-moment's great grandfather is Ernest (the famous writer, yes) and her mother is actress Mariel Hemingway. She has connections, but that's not all she has.

The 21-year-old has made a name for herself in the world of fashion by being a non-conventional beauty. She's blond, but not what you would call "pretty." She has a strong square jaw, punky sensibility, and is pretty unavoidable these days. Check out any happening party and she's there, usually wearing fashion-forward pieces by Alexander Wang. In fact, the designer was her date for this year's CFDA Awards.

It's safe to say that Dree is doing her own thing - and doing it well - despite her famous last name.

Can you tell the story of your life - or even just your day - in six words or less? Ernest Hemingway once claimed that he could tell a great story with just six words, famously writing: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." This week, John Mayer issued a similar challenge on his Twitter page, using Hemingway as inspiration. Mayer offers his own six-word story ("This heart didn't come with instructions") and asks fans to do the same.

Which Former First Lady's Memoir Piques Your Interest?

Yesterday news broke that First Lady Laura Bush has signed on to pen a memoir with Scribner, the house of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Laura's mother-in-law, Barbara Bush. The book is currently untitled, but scheduled for release in 2010, and it's unclear what type of secrets she will reveal. Memoirs are somewhat of a right of passage for former first ladies - Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush and Nancy Davis Reagan have each written one. Is there one you find particularly alluring?

Angelina Jolie Suprises A-Listers at Hollywood Film Festival

It was an exciting evening in Hollywood when Angelina Jolie showed up to hand Clint Eastwood the Director of the Year award at the Hollywood Film Festival Awards last night. Actors like Ryan Gosling, James Franco, Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman and so many more dressed up to honor their peers at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The audience was surprised when Angelina strutted out fresh from her recent trip to Afghanistan to speak about Clint. She said:

"There are some people in this business that are icons, and we often wonder if, when we meet them, they'll live up to what we imagine them to be. And Clint Eastwood in person is even better. Clint is what every great director should be. He is a great leader. And I certainly would follow him anywhere."

Clint returned the compliments as usual talking about Angelina's talent and beauty. With award season still a few months away, this is just a taste of what's to come and which famous faces we should get used to seeing on all the red carpets.
