DVD Review: Plastic Surgery Without The Surgery

Emmy-winning makeup artist Eve Pearl has created an instructional and informational book and follow-up DVD called Plastic Surgery Without the Surgery: The Miracle of Make-Up Techniques ($30). She believes that many women who consider plastic surgery could benefit from a makeup tutorial instead.

Last night I watched the 70-minute DVD, and I learned quite a bit. The DVD is broken into six chapters (face, eyes, nose, lips, body, and brushes) and it features several "real women" models. By far the most amazing transformative technique I learned was how to take out the bump in your nose by drawing a straight line with dark foundation on either side of it, blending, and then setting everything with powder. Among many (many) other tips and tricks, she also shows you how to cover up dark circles and make your lipstick last longer.

I walked away learning what brushes to use for what makeup product I was using in conjunction with blending everything to a flawless finish. At the end of each segment she breaks down what tools you need, how to create the look she demonstrated, and she offers even more tips to optimize the result. I also think it's cute how the voice-over calls everything "The Pearl Effect." I highly recommend this to anyone who struggles with technique - you don't have to be interested in plastic surgery to benefit from the DVD.

Eve Pearl had a career in business until her makeup artist mother became short-handed on the set of a Broadway show and begged her to help fill in. The first time she ever applied makeup to anyone other than herself was to Al Pacino! Ever since, Eve's been hooked on makeup and almost 20 years later she is the proud recipient of five Emmy Awards for TV makeup.

For the past three years, Eve has also been developing her own line of hand-mixed cosmetics which are available online, and will be making an official launch soon.

The line began with concealer and foundation and now she has lip glosses a universally flattering six-shade eye shadow palette, blush, eye treatments, primer, false eyelashes, powders, makeup brushes and mattifying gels. I have been lucky enough to test almost everything in the collection and the products can completely transform your look. The cream products are especially incredible because they effortlessly blend right into your skin.

One noteworthy product in particular is her salmon concealer. It contains an ingredient called AstaREAL which is harvested from micro algae that salmon feed off of in the ocean. It contains antioxidants and is 1000 times stronger than vitamin E which makes it moisturizing for your under eye area. The three available pinky-peach shades also help neutralize dark circles. Lastly, Eve has published a DVD and book called “Plastic Surgery Without the Surgery: The Miracle of Makeup Techniques” which I will tell you more about next week. Inside the International Makeup Artist Trade Show

Over the weekend, I attended the 2008 International Makeup Artist Trade Show, an event that showcases products, educators, and speakers who are involved in the makeup and skin-care world for television and film. It's also a place where makeup artists can purchase products and tools at a discount.

I didn't know what to expect from the show, but seeing a naked man wearing nothing but a flesh-colored thong and body paint was certainly a shock. I was also surprised to see so many zombies and ghouls walking around in broad daylight - I guess I just never really thought about special-effects makeup as part of the cosmetics genre.

Some of the brands in attendance were MAC Pro (a division of MAC for makeup professionals), Dermalogica, Fuse FX, Dead Sea Premiere, and several air-brush companies. I also checked out offerings from Eve Pearl, a five-time Emmy-winning TV makeup artist who is about to launch her own line of products. Another new discovery was Hakuhodo, a manufacturer of high-quality cosmetic brushes (they make MAC brushes).

Love It or Hate It? Topshop's Sequined Top Hat Clip

The holidays are all about amping it up, trying looks that aren't part of your everyday routine, and sequins, of course. Recently, while perusing holiday hair accessories, I came across this Sequin Top Hat Clip ($18) from Topshop. It has pearls. It has glitz. It's definitely got a whole lot of kitsch, and I could totally envision it being an appropriate New Year's Eve accessory. What do you think? Does this sparkly top hat have just the right amount of quirkiness, or is it simply too over the top?

Go Beyond Brown and Black With a Colorful Eyeliner

It seems to me that the majority of makeup wearers opt for the fairly standard hues of brown or black. Pretty, but a bit boring, nonetheless. For New Year's Eve I went bold with a bright blue liner, and this got me to thinking about the rainbow of colors available beyond traditional shades.

While reds, oranges, and yellows are often saved for the runway or high fashion/high drama looks, here are some tips on how to wear shades on the cooler end of the spectrum:

Bold blue: We know that blue-based red lipsticks can help neutralize the yellow cast in teeth, and did you know that blue eyeliner can help make your eyes pop? Who wouldn't want a little twinkle, eh? Recently, I chose a deeper hue for a sophisticated look with a richer contrast, applying Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Blue ($1.49) to the waterline of both my upper and lower lash lines. After smudging and setting with a navy shadow, I was off for evening cocktails. My friend said I looked well-rested. Wink wink.

White: Apply white liner to the inner v and lower waterline to open eyes and brighten. Try Shu Uemura Eye Light Pencil White ($18), which has a white matte shade on one side and a pearl shade on the other.
Go green: To make hazel or green eyes pop, try an emerald green shade like Tarte EmphasEyes High Definition Eye Pencil in Green ($18).
Purple power: If you have deep brown, green, or hazel eyes, a purplish shade of liner will make them stand out even more. Apply L'Oreal Le Kohl Eyeliner in Le Plum ($7.95) and watch your eyes light up.

Makeup Tips to Lift Droopy Eyes

It always amazes me how you can create optical illusions with makeup. From watching Eve Pearl's DVD, I learned how to make a nose look more slender and less crooked. Now I've picked up even more makeup tricks about how to lift droopy eyes from my new favorite book, Vogue Make-Up.

Actress Rose McGowan has eyes that are shaped on a downward slope. It's really easy to make eyes like this appear more almond-like, awake and brighter by following these easy makeup tips:

Line your upper lashes in an upward sloping manner by using a liquid liner or a sharp pencil. Extend the line just a little bit farther than the outer corner of each eye. Avoid any heavy eyeliner on the bottom so that you draw more attention to the top of your eyes.
Next, apply a bone-colored eye shadow to the area just above your lashes and to the 'inner v' of your eyes. Blend a medium shade starting in the crease to just under the brow bone; this will make the area seem larger. Add a subtle highlighter just below your brow; this will also help draw attention to the upper part of your eye.
Finish with a few false lash pieces on the outer corner of your eyes. You can curl these and your natural lashes together. Apply two coats of mascara and if you want, add a white or nude eye liner to the inner rims of your lower lashes. Voila, an instant eye lift!

How-To: Becki Newton's SAG Makeup

Last night, Becki Newton arrived at the 2008 SAG Awards looking like an ethereal beauty. Dressed in a long, white tiered-beaded dress, she let her clean, fresh face take center stage. Since so many of you loved her look, I've decided to break down her makeup for you to recreate at home. Also, I wouldn't want you to miss out on any of the other beauty looks from the show, so be sure to check them out.

FACE: Begin with clean, conditioned skin. The first thing you'll want to do is add a primer to your face. Something like Eve Pearl's Priming Moisturizer not only will create a smooth canvas but it's also very nourishing. Next, add a touch of concealer under your eyes and to any areas that are red or blotchy. Finish with a creamy foundation such as DuWop Revolotion Face in Laura C, which is lightweight and natural looking. Lastly, you can dust a little bit of powder over your skin, but be sure to tap the brush so it's not too heavy and blend well. You don't want to look too done up, just polished.
CHEEKS: Next, add a little bit of luminizer to your cheeks, nose, and forehead. Try Lancome's Photonic for a radiant glow. Then, add bronzer and blend well. You want to warm up the skin but not overdo it. Lastly, apply a medium pink blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend outwards. Sephora Blush Me Mono in Meringue Jalouse 2 is a rich, shimmery rose.
EYES: Blend a few neutral-colored shadows together. Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow in Demure is perfect, and you can also use the darkest color as a liner. Finish with two coats of black mascara and add a few false lash pieces just on the ends to open up the eyes. Also, be sure and fill in your brows to match your hair. I really like DuWop Browwow Palette since it's so customizable.
LIPS To achieve this look, apply a pretty pink creamy color like Chanel's Rouge Allure Lipstick in Desirable and top it with a high shine, shimmery light rose gloss such as Bare Escentuals Lip Gloss in Garden. No lip liner is necessary. Now, you're red-carpet ready!
