Barbara Daly's Tips For Looking Ten Years Younger

It's official, most of you want to look younger and admittedly, I'm right there with you. I hate the tiny little wrinkles that are already forming around my eyes, and lately, my skin has been lacking that youthful and supple natural glow.

About a month ago, I was given the opportunity to speak with celebrity makeup artist Barbara Daly about some of her secrets to looking younger which include everything from brightening your complexion and toning your skin. Her Make-up By Barbara Daly for Tesco is doing incredibly well, not to mention it's cheap as chips - bellissima!

Mimic the youthful look of bright fresh skin by keeping your foundation light in texture. Heavy foundation will only add to the appearance of wrinkles. Try mixing in a few drops of light-reflecting base for a dewy, delicate effect. Barbara suggests using Make-up by Barbara Daly Soft-Focus light-reflecting base (£5).
Combat thinning lips by creating a fuller looking pout. Emphasise the bow of your upper lips with a touch of highlighter and blend a little shimmering gloss over the centre of your lower lip to reflect light and make your lips look fuller. I like See-Through Lip Glaze in Chiffon or Bashful (£4.75).
To bring back your glow, use a multi-reflective highlighter such as Make-up by Barbara Daly Glow-Up (£6), on the inner and outer corners of the eyes, around the lips and on the cheekbones for a luminous effect.
Always use an eyelash curler for a ‘wide-awake’ effect, followed by a coat of well-combed out mascara. To avoid clogs and make eyes look extra huge, try Make-up by Barbara Daly High-Impact Mascara (£5).

Spot Check: Banish Blackheads

Whether you're suffering from adult acne or you just get the occasional spot - chances are you've had those bad face days, when a pesky blackhead made you want to retreat right back to the duvet.

The best way to get rid of blackheads is to remove the cause of them - excessive sebum or oil and dead skin cells. As I've said before, don't use anything overly harsh or too astringent, as your skin will only compensate by producing more oil. A specially formulated range for blemish-prone skin is best.

Don't be afraid of using cleansing products containing natural oils, such as jojoba or coconut oil to cleanse the skin. These oils are close to our natural oils, so they don't block the pores. I swear by DHC Cleansing Oil (£16) to keep your skin looking clear.

Use a gentle exfoliating mask every day to remove dead skin cells so they don't block pores. Just remember to be very gentle as over exfoliation can exacerbate the problem.
To squeeze or not to squeeze is the question. Personally, I'm against forcing the blackhead out, unless it's being done by a proper skincare expert, as part of a facial, with steam to open the pores.
Try to avoid touching your skin to prevent the spots and infection spreading.
Watch your diet. Make sure you're eating the right kinds of food to reduce sebum production. Avoid too many cooked carbohydrates and fats, and instead replace these with fresh fruits, vegetables and raw fats, such as avocados, olives, and olive oil.
Make sure any foundations and concealers are non-comedogenic and oil free so they won't block pores. Mineral makeup is ideal, though try and give your skin a break from makeup, at least one day a week.
Avoid products containing the following: alcohol, isopropyl mystate, lanolin, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, propylene glycol, mineral oil and parabens. Your skin is ultra sensitive when you're suffering from blemishes, so treat it kindly.
Steaming your face using tea tree oil and then applying a clay mask, a few times a week, will really help.

I was impressed by the fineness of the texture and unlike many powders, this didn't dry out my skin. I used it on it's own to even the complexion but you can also use it to add this season's matte effect, over foundation. Recently I was lucky enough to meet with skincare guru and expert dermatologist Dr Zein Obagi to talk about how to prevent skin ageing. Dr Obagi is often referred to as a maverick and a visionary; with a vast array of experience working with plastic surgeons, doctors and dermatologists he is undoubtedly one of the leading experts in skin health. Dr Obagi is also a charismatic lecturer and teacher, as well as having successfully corrected a wide range of skin conditions for his clients, which range from facial melasma and acne scars to deep wrinkles and unsightly age spots.

This month he has launched ZO Skin Health, which is available in the UK exclusively at Harrods and Selfridges. Unlike traditional anti-ageing brands, ZO Skin Health aims to set off a reaction whereby the skin nourishes, repairs and maintains itself. Dr Obagi's philosophy for younger looking skin is based on the premise that at a basic level, young skin is just about the cells functioning properly. By age thirty the whole system slows down and so the skin loses collagen, elastin and starts to become loose. Wrinkles form because the skin cells stop renewing themselves and the complexion loses it's vitality. The circulation also suffers which stops the blood getting to the skin and makes the surface appear dull.

Dr Obagi believes that applying moisturiser on top of this 'sleepy' skin won't work. Instead no matter how expensive the cream, it will just sit on the surface. Instead, the skin needs to be woken up using products such as retinolic acid, which causes a reaction on the skin, so that it literally has to repair itself. However, there are many issues with retinolic acid; it makes the skin dry and irritated, it smells horrible and it's also an unstable ingredient which breaks down when added to oil or water based products. At the moment no cream on the market contains retinol at a level beyond 0.2 or 0.3%, which Dr Obagi claims is too weak an amount to be effective.

ZO Skin Health, however, contains the substance at a high enough level to encourage the complexion to revitalise itself. He says, "I want to bring the science to skincare." I'll be writing a review of the products next week, so watch this space for the verdict.

Beauty Glossary: Pomegranate

I'm a big fan of pomegranate juice. Ever since scientists told us that this red fruit has amazing antioxidant powers, I've been trying to have at least a few glasses a week. Pomegranate is also fantastic at fighting free radicals, which can accelerate the signs of ageing on the skin.

Recently, it was revealed that this wonder ingredient also works it's magic on reducing dark spots on the skin. According to Glamour magazine there is new research which shows that extracts of pomgranate can help repair sun-scorched skin; soothing the complexion and reducing damage. Patricia Farris, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology, told the magazine,

"The gold standard for lightening significant pigmentation is prescription-strength hydroquinone, but for lighter marks, this ingredient (pomegranate) provides moderate improvement."

Along with other anti-oxidants, such as green tea, it is believed that pomegranate may help to diminish hyperpigmentation. It works by reducing inflammation and slowing the production of melanin in the body. For best results, try using a product that contains this ingredient, such as Estee Lauder Nutritious Vita-Mineral Moisture Lotion (£44) and keep guzzling the fruit itself too!

How To: Flawless Foundation Like Kate Moss and Dita Von Teese

As the days and nights get colder that fresh-faced, just-a-touch-of-tinted-moisturiser look simply won't cut it anymore. It's time to get serious and sort out your foundation. I've found that this is one beauty product that most of us are willing to fork out for, yet it's still tricky to get right.

We've all had bad colour matches or sloppy formulas from foundation but luckily the new breed of products aim to put an end to that. My current favourite is Chanel Lift Lumiere Firming and Smoothing Fluid Makeup (£34). It has an SPF15 to protect the skin, plus the fantastic creamy texture means it just glides on. It's ideal if you're looking to sculpt your face and show off your cheekbones.

Whether you prefer a strong look like Dita Von Teese or more natural glow like Kate Moss, there are some simple, yet effective, new rules for applying base. For my expert tips on getting a flawless look, just read more.

The most common mistake is over applying foundation. Even Dita Von Teese who wears full foundation doesn't make it look like a mask. Work with the skin's natural texture and allow it to show through.
These days base is more about adding a sheen to the skin rather than covering everything up. Mix your foundation with a little moisturiser if you want a lighter look like Kate.
When shopping for foundation test a dot on your chest. The colour here is purer than your face (and not so pale as on your neck) and will give a more accurate match.
Always apply foundation quickly and lightly using fingertips. Smooth even strokes will stop the colour looking clogged.
Once you've applied your base dust a little translucent powder over the top, even if your foundation is ultra light. This stops shine and gives that natural-looking glow for which Kate is famed.

Recently I switched sides on the great cream versus powder blush debate. This summer I got into the habit of swapping my faithful shimmery Bourjois blush for the gorgeous creamy Becca shades. The dewy fresh look that you only seem to get from a cream blush is a hard addiction to break so I was thrilled to hear about the latest backstage makeup artist trick.

Apparently there's now no need to be a die-hard powder fan or a team cream member only. At the 2009 Spring catwalk shows makeup pros applied both to the models' cheeks for a natural flush. It's all about layering different textures for a look that has a three-dimensional effect.

For a winter ruddiness opt for a pastel blush. Try The Body Shop Sparkle & Shimmer Powder (£15) in Sunset Peach.
Apply the powder blush liberally to cheeks, nose and forehead. On the cheeks take the blush circles wide so they reach the top of your cheekbones and almost out to your ears.
Next, add a cream blush just onto the very apples of the cheeks. Blend it gently with fingertips so as not to rub away the powder blush that's underneath.

Expert Tips for Fresh-Faced Beauty

While it's fun to experiment with trends, what we really want is natural looking, fresh-faced beauty that looks like it's just a result of good genes and plenty of sleep. The no makeup makeup look is ironically one of the trickiest to achieve but luckily help is at hand.

To celebrate the launch of Olay's Complete Care Touch of Foundation (£9.99), celebrity skincare guru Anastasia Achilleos and up-and-coming makeup artist Laurey Simmons talked me through their tips for looking beautifully bare-faced.

Anastasia says "Cleaning your skin daily is the absolute basic rule of great skin." Make sure to remove your makeup no matter how tired you are before going to sleep.
Do home treatments to keep your complexion looking at it's best. Anastasia recommends filling a sink with warm water and adding a few drops of lavender oil. Soak a face cloth in the water and then squeeze it out before laying it over your entire face. Take deep breaths and place the cloth onto your skin. This will initiate the flow of blood to the surface of the face.
Laurey suggests using a light tinted moisturiser as oppose to a heavy base if you want to look young and fresh. Try Olay Complete Touch of Foundation (£9.99) dotted onto the nose, cheeks and forehead. These are the areas that usually need more coverage so Laurey recommends blending lightly outwards for a natural effect. The fine pigments in the foundation help to even out the skin tone.
Try a cream blush for an effortlessly beautiful look. "Smile in the mirror" says Laurey "and apply a dab of blusher to the apples of the cheeks. Blend outwards towards the corners of your eyes using your fingertips." For a co-ordinated look Laurey suggests applying just a touch of cream blush to the lips for a bee-stung style.
