Why Be Famous When You Can Be Almost Famous?

Before you can be famous, you need to be almost famous. The folks at S.Pellegrino understand this concept and are giving more than 60 culinary students the opportunity to claim their fame. In the 6th Annual S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Competition, students work their way to the finals by competing in regional contests. More than 30 top culinary schools in the US and Canada are participating and students will be given the opportunity to go head-to-head against each other in front of a panel of judges.

Once they've excelled in their region, they are able to proceed to the final event at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley. The event takes place March 7–10 and consists of three categories: Harvest Mystery Basket, Signature Dish, and People's Choice. This year the event will be hosted by Top Chef season-one-winner Harold Dieterle and Sopranos star Lorraine Bracco.

When asked about the competition Harold said:

"The restaurant industry has all the qualities of a real-life competition. Almost Famous sets up these young
chefs to feel comfortable and thrive in these high-pressure situations, which is why so many of the students leave the competition and go on to work for some of the best restaurants in the country."

This indeed may be true. Last year's winner, Ranbir Batra, was able to experience work opportunities he never would have had otherwise, including working alongside Sara Moulton. In addition to new culinary adventures, the overall winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Do You Think KFC's Famous Bowls Are Disgusting?

Before comedian Patton Oswalt voiced Remy, the rat in Ratatouille, his biggest contribution to the food world was a shtick about KFC's Famous Bowls. In his routine, he would often refer to the bowls as a "failure pile in a sadness bowl." Although the bit of stand-up even found its way onto Late Night With Conan O'Brien, it turns out that it was all just for show; Oswalt had never actually tasted one of the famous bowls.

To make things right, The Onion's A.V. Club asked him to taste test one. I was expecting the article to become a, "What do you know? They're not that bad after all!" sort of an article, but it didn't. In the end Oswalt can now rightfully hate on the Famous Bowl. In fact he sums it all up into one delicate sentence, "It's goddamn horrible, this Famous Bowl."

Internet Famous Class: A Real Class, Not Just the Name of a New Viral Video

You don't have to cut off a body part to become "Internet Famous," but if you're desperately training your camera on your kid, pet, or friends in hope that they'll do something so compelling as to end up in the category that is viral, well, you can go to school for that. Internet Famous at Parsons New School for Design is a graduate-level class for students and declares itself the first class ever "where software will award each student a grade based on a quantitative measurement of their web fame."

Sites like Digg, Del.icio.us, Flickr, YouTube, and Google will help measure each student's popularity, and grades are algorithmically determined - and they get an A through F grade, depending on their Internet popularity. People watching, commenting, and making reaction videos/responses to the class's projects add to the grade, as do people befriending them on MySpace and linking to them.

How postmodern. Although I'm guilty of enjoying and forwarding new and hilarious viral videos and posts to my friends, I can't help but think that for every Dramatic Chipmunk, there are 8,000 epic fails. And even though I still ask my boyfriend to not tase me, bro, the fame the Internet brings is more ephemeral and fleeting than the 15-minutes of fame cliche that used to exist in traditional media. Remember Tay Zonday? Me neither.

Heidi and Spencer Show NYC How to Be Famous

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt did their best to smile for the cameras yesterday as they arrived at LAX. They were on their way to NYC to begin promoting their new book, "How to Be Famous," but first up was the requisite kissing and posing for their friends the paparazzi. Unfortunately, their scheduled interview this morning on The Today Show ended up being cancelled - and that set off the latest round of Heidi and Spencer's feud with Al Roker. Spencer took to Twitter today to launch a variety of assaults against the newsman, while Heidi stayed a little more on-message to discuss their book. John Frieda's Quick Tip on Creating Instant Volume

Famous hairstylist John Frieda says that most people fall into one of two groups: those who are lacking volume and those who are looking to tame their frizz. I've got you covered on the latter, and as for the former, here's a quick tip from the legendary stylist on reviving limp locks.

If you have no time to wash and style your hair, you can pump up the look with three basic ingredients: a round brush, a blow dryer, and a volumizing product, like Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Booster ($6) or Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray ($18). First, hold the hair straight up on dry hair and spray the roots. Next, take a small section from right behind the fringe, wrap it around the round brush, and blow-dry, concentrating on lifting the roots for volume. Finish off by grabbing subsequent sections of hair back toward the crown, and there you go. It's instant volume without too much effort.

John Mayer was proud to show off his colorful tattoo sleeve on the December cover of Details. He's out and about talking about his latest album, Battle Studies, but in typical Mayer fashion John didn't only speak about business. Just like in his recent interview with the New York Times, John quickly got candid about his personal life. Here's more:

On his relationships with Hollywood's leading ladies: "You just never know who’s going to come into your life. To my mind, the only thing sicker than saying, 'Wow, you’re a famous person and it would do a lot for my career to go out with you,' is to say, 'Wow, you’re a famous person and I like you and all, but I can’t do that to my career.' I don’t think either of those is a good option."
On his unexpected collaboration with country star Taylor Swift: "I don’t know if you know, but I’m not exactly Bob Dylan - I’m already a pop musician . . . I want to reach as many people as possible."
His music vs. his celebrity persona: "Sometimes I feel like I do two things for a living. I make records and I talk to people. The record is much, much better than any interview I can give - you’ll walk away from the record liking me a hell of a lot more than you would walking away from an interview."
