Trend Alert: Farrah Fawcett Hair

They say everything old is new again. (Does that mean the return of claw bangs? I hope not.) But when popular styles from years ago do start to resurface, it's always nice to see how it's adapted to modern times. Take Farrah Fawcett, for instance. Her feathery style was the hallmark of mid- to late-1970s beauty. Is it back in full swing? Not quite, but I'm loving this new version, which is not as much about volume as it is about soft, shiny waves that are curled away from the face. The feathery quality is still there - it's just been refined.
Farrah used to get her flippy style with the Schick Speed Styler, as evidenced by this commercial. But if you like this new take on "The Farrah," it's easy to do. After blowing out your hair, apply hairspray with a drier formulation that still provides shine, like Sally Hershberger Supreme Head Brilliant Hairspray ($13). Next, using a flat iron, wrap sections of hair around the barrel of the iron, as if you were using a curling iron. Focus on curling each section away from your face. When you're finished, you can either softly twist sections together so that they're intertwined or lightly break up the style with your fingers. Spritz again with hairspray, and you'll be far out.

Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Studio 54 was the place to be. During its heyday, the Manhattan discothèque was notorious for its jet-setting crowd of celebrities and socialites, and among other things, its reputation for drugs and illicit sexual liaisons among some of those in attendance. All hedonism aside, it was also an era where fluffy hair, lots of makeup, and sparkled accessories reigned supreme. Bella Donna: Farrah Fawcett

Sad news from Los Angeles today: Farrah Fawcett died this morning after a battle with cancer. She was 62. An icon since she shot to stardom in Charlie's Angels, she made a lasting impression on pop culture. Her famous swimsuit poster sold between five million and 12 million copies, depending on who you ask - and then there's her signature feathered flip, a hairstyle that seemed everywhere in the '70s and made a comeback this year.

Before becoming a television star, Fawcett appeared in a string of commercials, most of which played off her perky demeanor and megawatt smile. (Check her "flippy hair" ad as well as this sexy spot.) She also turned her fame into a money-making endeavor, launching Farrah-branded shampoo, wigs, and - no joke - a plumbing gadget called Farrah's Faucet. She is survived by her longtime partner, Ryan O'Neal, and their son, Redmond O'Neal. There's no doubt the world will miss this icon, both today and in the future. Goodnight, Angel.

Farrah Fawcett Shares Her Cancer Struggle

Farrah Fawcett's hair is iconic, but tomorrow night she will shave it off in front of the world. In Farrah's Story, the former angel chronicles her three-year battle with cancer, and it's sure to be extremely honest, emotional, and at times hard to watch. The video diary airs tomorrow on NBC.

Farrah is determined to show her beautiful strength, along with the ugly side of cancer, in the documentary. The story is sometimes gut-wrenching, and to be honest, I had to turn away during some of the preview clips that aired on the Today Show this morning.

Beauty Flashback: Schick Speed Styler

Got the midday sleepies? This '70s ad should perk you up, perhaps even a little too much. A hyper-happy Farrah Fawcett demonstrates an odd hair-styling contraption. Of course, Farrah thinks the speedy styler is amazing, even though its squirting power makes me deeply uneasy. Guess that's what you have to deal with if you want, as Farrah puts it, flippy curls.

Five Ways to Hide a Cowlick

I have a friend who has this piece of hair on one side of her face that refuses to lay flat at the root. Mere hours after a professional blowout and being hair-sprayed into (seeming) submission, the section of hair slowly bends back in rebellion.

She has a cowlick, which is caused by the hair growing in a spiral pattern at the root (so there's no permanent fix). Of course, the best way to hide a cowlick is to point it out to your stylist and get the right cut to deal with it. From easiest to most difficult:

Change your part. When hair is wet, brush the front section forward and part a few inches closer to your ear on the side of the cowlick. Apply a styling cream with a slight hold. New parts always take some getting used to, so give it a few days.
Wear your hair curly. This may seem like a "no duh" thing, but using a smaller size curling iron to make the non-cowlick side have a little bend to it is an easy fix. Just make sure you don't go too overboard and end up looking like Farrah Fawcett back in the day.
Blow dry. Take the smallest round brush you can find to damp hair and blow dry, pulling hair straight up. Use a cool setting if you need to get close to your face - it's better for your hair anyway. Alternate which direction you are pulling hair and which side the blow dryer is on.
Flat iron. Again, exercise extreme caution when trying this and don't use the highest setting. Depending how close to the root your cowlick is, you may be able to use a narrow, small-sized flat iron to flatten. Keep it far away from your face!
Relax. No, that's not a cop-out, "cowlicks aren't a big deal" answer. My friend and I actually tried having a stylist put a little relaxer on that small section of hair. It didn't work, but also didn't damage her hair. I wouldn't recommend trying this at home, though, unless you are experienced with relaxing or perming kits - they're tricky!

Trend Alert: New Year, Long Waves

OK, I know it's nothing all that earth-shattering since long waves have been in fashion long before the Farrah Fawcett days. But this New Year's Eve, it was all about the soft cascading curl. Whether it was a more-refined look like Ashlee Simpson and Eva Longoria Parker or tousled and undone à la Molly Sims and Chloë Sevigny, the look was still sexy - and a little more inspired than pin-straight locks. Want some loose waves? Keep a large-barreled (at least one inch or larger) curling iron open and wrap your hair around the barrel for a few seconds and release. Is this the iconic hairstyle of the 2000s? We have one more year to find out, but I'm betting yes.
