Paris Fashion Week, A/W 2009: Balmain

Christophe Decarnin stuck with a tried and tested approach for his Autumn 2009 line which was shown at Paris Fashion Week yesterday. Working with his by-now signature rock'n'roll glam look, this collection included uber-short minis, body con shapes and a fair amount of sequins. He also continued the penchant for exaggerated shoulders, in fact, they were so extreme that two models nearly became gridlocked on the catwalk! There was a very familiar feel to the garments which are sure to attract party girls all over the globe.

Decarnin added sex appeal with slit front harem pants, fetishistic boots and revealing gowns, which are likely to be a red carpet hit. He is widely celebrated for breathing life in to Balmain, but this season questions are raised as to whether he needs to move the brand on even more. Hervé Léger Keeps It Simple For Spring

At Hervé Legér, makeup artist Val Garland described the look she created as "a little bit punk but in a Hervé Legér way." The design team and Garland's MAC team stumbled upon their perfect Spring 2009 look by accident, which is kind of punky in itself. "We did two looks [to show the Hervé Legér designers]. One was a really greasy smoky eye. Val was wiping it off and it left a ring, and they were like 'Stop right there! that's what we want!'" explained Senior Makeup Artist Ashley Dorsey. Aside from eyeliner, the look consisted only of MAC Select MoistureCover applied with an eyeliner brush, feathery mascara, and strobe cream on models' limbs.

With skin, Garland adopted a less-is-more philosophy. Since it's early in Fashion Week and models' are still relatively rested and breakout-free, this was an easy feat. "Keep it real, keep it bare. Moisturizer, concealer if needed, maybe some highlighters," she said. "In this collection, there's a lot of skin."

The eyes took center stage. "I want it to be tight and very black, so it's a question of using an eyeliner, going over it with a waxy pencil, and then, so that it won't move, setting it with a black powder. So it's sooty, sooty, black, black, black, and it won't smudge. It's like makeup for the beach!" You know, if you wear $2000 dresses to the beach...

Best of 2008: Fabulous Fashion Week Shows

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let's see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don't forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler's Fall line, Alexander Wang's Spring offerings, and Balmain's Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? Sienna And Skins Stars Take On Sunday At LFW

Sienna Miller and her sister Savannah showcased their Autumn/Winter 2009 Twenty8Twelve line at London Fashion Week on Sunday, taking the traditional walk down the runway at the end for guests such as Erin O'Connor, Alexa Chung and Skins star Kaya Scodelario who sat next to Alexa in the front row! At PPQ's infinitely more colourful show Alice Dellal, Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe modelled clothes for an audience including Nicola Roberts. It wasn't just all girls, though - ex-Skins star Nicholas Hoult (who played Kaya's older brother) was also a fixture at a couple of Sunday's shows, attending the Aquascutum and Jaeger London events.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Preen

New York fashion week is well under way for Spring 2009 at Bryant Park. Yesterday, British design duo Preen took to the catwalk (although Justin Thornton attended alone whilst his partner is heavily pregnant) to present their latest collection.

Preen have really been a name to watch for recent seasons and they're sure to become a household name very soon. This collection did not disappoint. They continued with the body-con silhouette of previous seasons but added a twist with tulip shape skirts and exposed detailing. Both zips and corsetry were on display creating an almost skeletal style.

The colour palette was mainly muted with a few bright red pieces. Preen played with shape creating volume using pleats, layers and folds whilst still remaining very feminine. Delicate detailing such as punched leather and ruffles added to the playful femininity. Cut out detailing does not simply exaggerate the delicate feeling of the pieces but along with the short hemlines also highlights the sex appeal of the dresses.

Get Ups, Glasses And Understated Glamour At LFW

As I showed you earlier, the stars are still swarming the capital for London Fashion Week, with Peaches Geldof leaving her Dad at Luella and heading to the Issa show alongside Blake Wood, Will Young, Jenny Frost, Leah Wood Tamsin Egerton and Daisy Lowe who looked stunning in her orange frock. After the show she took her jacket off and wore the gown on to a party hosted by Stephen Jones, where her fellow guests included Erin O'Connor and Meg Matthews. Sugababe Heidi Range and her man Dave Berry went to the On|Off event looking smart alongside Jodie Kidd and Gok Wan, who was showing off his Chanel arm candy with pride! What a fashion forward crowd!

London Fashion Week A/W 2009: Mulberry

Emma Hill presented her second collection for Mulberry today above the store on Bond Street. The room was decorated in black and violet with glitter cockroaches adorning the walls and faux trees. Hill looked to her own youth for inspiration citing 'mean teens' as her main subject. The linr included student favourites such as duffel coats, chunky knits and short woolen skirts. These are, of course, the clothes that we really want to wear. They're stylish, casual, yet strategically planned. It's essentially the Kate Moss impact where British women are striving to look like they couldn't care less, all the while remaining at the forefront of fashion.

Hill elaborated, "I love fashion and I want to wear fashion, but it’s something to be enjoyed, not be intimidated by. Most women I know want to feel better, cooler or sexier - and they don’t want to look like fashion victims."

The Mulberry girl became a bit rebellious this season with grungy elements like lumberjack shirts, biker jackets and skinny jeans reflecting an American influence. Accessories, for which Mulberry is clearly the most famous, stuck to the classic designs but in new proportions and colours, for example a neon oversized Bayswater clutch. The design house has also upped it's footwear game with loafers, round toe knee boots and funky ankle boots. What do you think of the collection?

Fab Flash: Graduate Fashion Week Judges Revealed

Just over a week to go until 2009 Graduate Fashion Week kicks off at Earls Court in London. This is the week when students from all over the UK head to the capital to present their final collections. Previous graduates to show there include Christopher Bailey of Burberry, Stella McCartney and Julien Macdonald. The judging panel for this year's River Island Gold Award has just been revealed to include Matthew Williamson and Giles Deacon who will take their places alongside Elle's editor-in-chief Lorraine Candy and River Island's CEO Richard Bradbury. I, of course, will be there to bring you all of the big names of tomorrow. Will you or anybody you know be presenting their graduate lines?

2009 Fall Paris Fashion Week: Louis Vuitton

As Paris Fashion Week bids us adieu, Marc Jacobs fashioned a feast of a finale. With an eclectic mix of baroque, volume, and - you guessed it - the '80s, Fall's Vuitton babe is divinely decked. This collection was not shy on color; crimson, canary yellow, salmon, and emerald created a robust palette, while nude and black balanced. Splattered and cosmic prints also tickled the eyes. Volume, i.e. folds, curves, loops, were festooned asymmetrically and in opposing colors creating flirtatious dimension.

This was mostly a runway of legs, as skirts and dresses reigned; however, boots were ultra thigh-high, creating the illusion of pants. The comic touch this time around was crinkled bunny ears fastened onto delicious Bardot chignons. In keeping with the French splendor of the house, where drama roams free, this was another high-inducing collection by monsieur Jacobs.

2009 Fall Paris Fashion Week: Givenchy

No matter what Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci serves up, it's always bound to be ahead of the curve. His latest Fall '09 collection, however, is also simultaneously beautiful, thanks to feather-infested gowns and romantic draping. But it wouldn't be Givenchy if it didn't throw together a mumbo jumbo of anomalies: studs and feathers, sheer and draping, asymmetry and power suits. The color palette is minimal, per usual - black, white, cream - but the silhouettes are anything but.

Pant suits were decked out in plush feathers, draped blouses were more interesting via rope details, LBDs were characterized by crazy draping, sheer blouses were given leather arms. You get the picture? There's more. Draped dresses bedazzled with studs, military style coats covered with fur, and strong shoulders. That's the world of Givenchy in a nutshell - so simple, yet painstakingly complicated.
