Geek Tip: Share Big Files With File Dropper

If you need to send a large file and want an alternative to YouSendIt (which I find great, too!), check out File Dropper.

They claim it's the "simplest file-hosting website ever" and I must admit, it's pretty easy. All you have to do is upload your file (it can be up to 5GB) and send the url you generate to whoever you want to share the file with. You don't have to sign up for an account, or share your email address.

Can you ask your readers for help? I saw a metal accordion-style file holder in a magazine in the last few weeks. I can't find the magazine and I am trying to buy something similar for my office. It was something from the May issue of a design mag. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I've searched high and low and haven't had any luck tracking down a metal accordion file holder, but I've found plenty of stylish accordion file holders. Geek Tip: Simple and Free Sites For Storing and Sharing Files

In my line of work, there are a lot of photos and videos being passed around, which can take a painfully long time to email in Entourage (or any other email client for that matter). To make things easier on my co-workers, and my patience, I rely on file-sharing websites. Here are some of my favorite services for sharing files for free or a minimum fee.

File Dropper - This online file hosting site allows you upload your files, then send the recipient a link where it can be downloaded. It's free for up to 5 GB, and there are optional pay accounts (ranging from $1 to $10 a month for up to 250 GB) if you need to host bigger files. It's fast and easy to use.
YouSendIt - You can send high-quality videos, whole albums of music, and a ton of high-resolution photos at once, up to 2GB in size. When you send your files from the YouSendIt site, your recipient receives a link via email. By clicking the link, she gets directed to the hosting page and can download the file to her desktop.The site offers a free 14-day trial, free "lite" account, or paid accounts from $10 a month and up.

Keep and Share - Need to share files with a client or co-worker? This free service lets you create shared folders and upload files up to 10 MB and then generates a link you can securely share with others. The site has a professional design and offers upgrade accounts, which allow you to share 50 MB to 1 GB of content (for $5 to $25 a month).
Gmail - Gmail allows you to send and receive messages up to 25 MB in size. Don't have Gmail? Check your service's limit.

Gillian and David Still Want To Believe

The X Files: I Want To Believe premiered in London's Leicester Square last night, with the lovely and rather pregnant Gillian Anderson saying it was a bigger turnout than the LA premiere. She also said that they were on board for another movie if this one does well, and said this film is more of a "particular creepy story", which also develops Mulder and Scully's relationship rather than an all-out special effects blockbuster like the movie that's overshadowing everything at the moment: The Dark Knight.

Other stars in attendance included Tom Fletcher and Harry Judd from McFly who are still looking a little tanned after our jaunt to T4 On The Beach, Sam and Amanda Marchant, Chanelle Hayes and a very demure looking Mary Elizabeth Winstead who I have an exclusive interview with for you later on today! So keep your eyes peeled...

Steal of the Day: West Elm Wide Two-Drawer File Cabinet

The key to a stylish home office is finding furniture that doesn't look too severe. The only thing severe about this West Elm Wide Two-Drawer File Cabinet (below left) is that it's severely stylish and severely on sale: $200, reduced from $430. It comes in darker chocolate finish or lighter acorn, and I love the way the "handles" at the top and bottom of the drawers look like a design element. It's a compact 34 inches wide and holds letter or legal-size files.

How To: Delete Temporary Internet Files

What exactly are Temporary Internet Files?

The Temporary Internet Files (or cache) folder contains Web page content that is stored on your hard disk for quick viewing. This cache permits Internet Explorer or MSN Explorer to download only the content that has changed since you last viewed a web page, instead of downloading all the content for a page every time it is displayed.

Despite all these positive things about Temporary Internet Files, they have one big drawback: they compromise your privacy. Everyone with access to your computer can look into your Temporary Internet Files folder and see the sites that you have visited in the past. You can manually delete the contents of Temporary Internet Files folder but this will not erase all traces of the pages because a special file called Index.dat is placed in this folder and it will still preserve the names and even the dates of your first visits to many pages.

Generally there might not be any reason to worry about all of these files in your computer, but what if you sell your computer and all that information is left for someone else to see. Maybe friends and relatives visit and use your computer and you don't want everyone to know what files you are running on your computer. Then you are going to want to know how to delete these files.

Even if you are not worried about privacy on your computer, you may be surprised to realize how much hard drive space all of this information takes up. If you are running out of drive space, you may want to delete these files.

To delete temporary files in Internet Explorer 6.x on a PC:

Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools
Click on the Tools menu and then click Internet Options
Select the General Tab
Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files

To delete temporary files in Mozilla on a PC or MAC:

Open Mozilla
Select the TOOLS menu and then click Privacy
Click the Clear button

To delete temporary files in Safari on a MAC:

Open Safari
Select the Safari menu and then click Preferences
Click Autofill from the top Toolbar
Click the EDIT button next to Other Forms
Click the Remove All button
Remove the check from the OTHER FORMS box

Cool Idea: File Table

It's hard to come by an attractive file cabinet. So, why not forgo them altogether? The Egg Collective File Table (inquire for price) is a white, powder-coated steel desk with a built-in file tray. The table allows you to keep your files close at hand on the face of the desk itself, and frees up floor space which would otherwise be taken by a separate cabinet. Beyond its clever design, it's also simply handsome and reminds me of my one of my all-time faves, the West Elm Parsons Desk. What do you think?

Most File Sharing Happens at Night

If you do most of your legally questionable (or totally legal and legit!) file sharing at night you're not alone. According to a recent article from the Times Online most file sharing - which commonly takes the form of downloading movies, music and TV shows via peer-to-peer programs like Limewire, BitTorrent and KaZaA - happens at night. In fact about eight million people are on file-sharing networks at any one time. Here's more:

There are more than 900 million illegal music files available for download on file-sharing networks. File-sharing was the most used service on the internet last year. The heaviest usage was observed during the night, when the percentage of file-sharing traffic rose to up to 95 percent of total internet traffic.

The numbers shocked me a bit. I'd assume more than eight million people are on networks at any given time and I certainly thought more people downloaded documents, programs, music and movies during the day while at work. I guess managers can stop worrying all their employees are downloading and watching movies instead of working. When do you do most of your file sharing?

File This Under Nail Care

After discovering my first glass nail file, I've been hooked. Unlike emery boards, glass nail files never go dull; they need only a quick rinse under the tap to be good as new. My Sephora file is a grid of teeny, tiny upraised rough glass nodules. Think frosted glass, but maybe a tad rougher. The file is thin, but sturdy enough for me to feel confident that it won't break when my klutzy self inevitably drops it on the floor.

You use it just like any other nail file, but it feels significantly less abrasive. There is no pulling or snagging on the nail tip, which prevents cracking, peeling, and splitting of the nails. In fact, it is so gentle that you can use it safely on acrylics or on damaged or fragile nails. The only drawback? Using it reminds some people of nails on the chalkboard. But if you're interested in checking out a glass file, it's a relatively inexpensive investment. Geek Tip: Control Your Computer From Anywhere With an App

There have been those times where I really needed some info off of my home computer but am nowhere near it to access it. Now with my iPhone and a spare $25 for an app, I can! The app is called Jaadu and like a magic wand, it allows you to access your home computer from anywhere in the world. An easy setup lets you control your mouse on your Mac, Windows, or Linux home system, and modifier menus let you control up/down/left/right arrows for easy navigation. Plus, there's a cheaper version that comes with less features, so if you just need to peep a few files, $1 should get you there.
