News to Me: Financial Advice Turned Religious

If you've so much as glanced at the news lately you'd know the economy has been going through rocky times. Some people are seeking financial advice from their church to hold their hands through the tumultuous market ride, and I just learned that thousands of churches around the world have added teaching the gospel of money to their repertoire.

Participants in such church groups say that the bible is packed with information on handling finances and for some it has helped lift the "spiritual burden" of being in debt. A proponent mentioned saving aggressively and giving 10 percent of your income to the church as basic fundamentals found in the bible. Critics say that the bible is being trivialized by these "finance ministers."

What do I say? Whatever gets people through troubled times, more power to you, but when it comes to handling money I'm wary of the emphasis on giving so much to the church. We should try to give what we can to charities of our choice, but it just makes me uncomfortable that giving 10 percent is mentioned as part of an overall financial plan. What do you say?

Credit Limit Cut? Your State of Residence Could Be the Reason

When it comes in the form of credit cards, plastic is dramatic. There are always consumers in the news discussing how they've been mistreated by a credit card carrier, and there seems to be an endless stream of hidden policies that rear their harmful heads when customers least expect it.

Take the case of Paul Smith (not of kitschy designing fame), a San Diego resident who was alarmed when his credit card limit was recently reduced from $7,000 to $1,400. Smith's credit score is 751 and he couldn't think of a reason why the company would take such rash action, so he called the carrier (HSBC) to get some answers.

A representative told Smith the action was "due in part to the financial situation in California. Also in Nevada, Florida and Arizona." If credit cards aren't all about personal finances, the credit cards sure are full of surprises.

Do Tell: What Macho Traits Do You Wish Would Go Away?

We've heard about the he-cession and how the economic downturn has affected men's mental health perhaps even more than it has women's.

One writer goes further and says that all of this bad news for men is just paving the way for the death of macho as we know it. Macho arrogance got us into a lot of this global financial mess, he reasons, and its exit stage left will get us out of it. Furthermore, power dynamics are either shifting from men to women or equalizing in the public and private sphere into something more egalitarian.

I would love it if macho men stopped being homophobic, communicated better, respected women, and felt comfortable (gasp!) showing their emotional sides rather than trying to prove how tough they are. What macho traits would you be happy to see die off?

Married For 80 Years, Couple Shares Keys to Happy Marriage

Talk about devotion. Bill and Marie DeCaro (ages 100 and 99) have been married for eight decades, making them the world's second longest-married couple. They were married in 1929 and endured the hardship of The Great Depression when Bill lost all of his money because of a shuttered bank.

When Action News asked Bill about the downfall for most marriages, he replied, "Where do couples go wrong? They spend too much money. Don't know how to hold on to more money." While the couple believes the lack of financial responsibility is the number one way to rock the marriage boat, Marie says the rest of it is pretty simple. She advises, "Remember to talk a lot, love a lot, laugh a lot, exercise a little and have a little fun."
