On Our Radar: Colette Pop Up Store

Everytime I go to Paris, I make sure I have time to visit Colette. The super cool boutique offers the latest must have designer wares alongside contemporary books, music and funky gadgets. This festive season, I won't have to travel across the channel to get my fix as the boutique is coming to London.

Fittingly, the hip district of Shoreditch will play host to the pop-up store which will be packed with quirky items including furniture, Christmas gifts, and kitchenwear! The so-called Cube Store opens later this week and will remain open until 3rd January 2010.

To gain access to special events at the boutique you need to apply online or speak to the driver of a Nissan Cube car which will be dotted all over London. The store will be located at the Boilerhouse, The Old Truman Brewery, London, E1 6QL.

Buzz-Worthy Video: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Mellows Out

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so you know I was pysched to watch him play host on SNL this weekend. And boy, did the guy come prepared. He kicked things off with a ridiculously impressive singing-and-dancing performance of "Make 'Em Laugh" from Singin' in the Rain, but my favorite skit of the night was "The Mellow Show." Hosted by Andy Samberg as Jack Johnson and featuring Bill Hader as Dave Matthews, the guys poked fun at some of the music industry's most notoriously laid-back guitar strummers.

Gear Review: slotRadio by Sansa

I love my iPod, but there is a new music player vying for my heart: the slotRadio ($79) by Sansa.

The two-inch-by-two-inch clip-on music player comes with a data card with 1,000 songs from the Billboard music charts, with prearranged playlists by music genre. I tried the additional Health and Fitness mix, which includes the mixes for warmup, cardio, roadwork (cycling), power (lifting), yoga, cooldown, and the even more mellow spa mix.

I must admit I am a bit technically challenged - ironic since I am a blogger, I know. Even with my latent Luddite ways, I found the slotRadio super easy to use. The instruction manual was simply written with helpful graphics. Open the box, charge the radio, which took about an hour, put in your music card, and go. My inaugural run with the slotRadio was great. It clips onto your clothes and is so small and light you don't even notice it. The volume button is easy to find, as is the skip button. You can easily skip genres, too. I warmed up with Lady Gaga and Nelly and moved onto cardio with a few bands I have never heard of, like VHS or Beta. The slotRadio feels like a pop music education in a good way. This little player is a great way to introduce yourself to new music. However, I had to remove the foam covers from the earbuds to keep them from falling out of my ears.

The video screen features graphics of exercises and lets you know the next song up on the playlist so you can advance easily to find motivational music. The slotRadio is also a real radio. As an NPR junkie, I love that I can switch over to radio and catch up on news or Fresh Air while working out.

I enjoyed the Health and Fitness music card much more than the standard Billboard artist music card. Thankfully, the data cards are easy to change, and there are many options to choose from, including Christmas tunes, '80s and '90s music, Latin, and classical. The extra data cards cost $40. The slotRadio bundle comes with headphones, charger, and Billboard music card. These make a great gift for the musically impaired fitness fanatic in your life.

When Winter Rolls In, Don't Give Up on Working Out

It isn't hard to explain why our workouts get a little lackadaisical when Winter rolls in - 'cause, baby, it's cold outside - and it's pretty understandable that a lot of us lose our motivation to get outdoors for a run or a bike ride. So, how actually do people who work out through the Winter do it? An article from The New York Times reveals exactly that - and how some people manage to get up "the high activation energy" required to stay committed to fitness during the bitter Winter months.

Turns out, if you're new to fitness, you're more likely to give into a little workout hiatus when it gets colder and darker out. According to Janet Buckworth, an exercise physiologist at Ohio State University, it's the opposite for exercise veterans. “If you are beyond the point that you are learning how to exercise, you can’t imagine not running in bad weather,” she says. In fact, some exercise enthusiasts relish the challenge of an outdoor workout in Winter, even going on "epic" bike rides during snow storms and blizzards.

Regardless, you don't have to be an extremist to keep up a Winter workout routine. The key? Just get into something you could really stick with long-term. Choose a form of exercise that you're excited to do, and can keep up when Winter arrives. Group classes are great, and Buckworth recommends finding something you can do indoors, getting a friend to go with you, and even something as simple as updating your playlist with music you love to keep exercise fun and help you stay committed to your fitness regime.

Movie Preview: Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart

The trailer for Crazy Heart notes that both stars Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have been nominated for Oscars, and the solemn, raw tone of the film looks an awful lot like awards show bait for these two big talents. Jeff Bridges stars as Bad Blake, a grizzled, hard-livin', lovin', and drinkin' country singer/songwriter who's known for his amazing music, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the journalist he eventually falls for.

We don't see a ton of plot in the trailer, but the story seems like a familiar one, complete with introspection and a soft country anthem that fits the title. Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall also star in the film, which features original songs by celebrated songwriter T-Bone Burnett.

Fit Tip: Do the First Ten Without Music

Today when I was at the gym I realized that I had my iPod Shuffle, but forgot my earphones. Ugh, I hate when that happens. Luckily for me, my pal DearSugar was on her way to our gym so I called her and asked if she would bring me my headphones from the office. The problem was that she was about 15 minutes behind me and I had to make it without music for the first 15 minutes on the treadmill.

I made it through, but it was tough. As soon as I was able to put on my headphones and run to some upbeat music I was completely invigorated, which gave me a bit of a second wind and helped me push through for the last 20 minutes of my run. Turns out, my entire run went by super fast. Tomorrow at the gym, I am going to try to motivate myself based on the same principle, but keep focused on distance (not time). For example, once I have run two miles then I can pump up the jams for the final two miles. If you think this could motivate you then try it out and let me know what you think.
