I was lucky enough to talk to celeb trainer Harley Pasternak, who shared a tip that seems perfect for the weekend. Harley says that the singular, most important piece of fitness advice he can offer someone is, "get a great pair of running shoes." On top of that, Harley says that you should always be wearing them, always.
Celeb trainer Valerie Waters, who most of you voted as the Hollywood trainer you most want to work with, is a pragmatist. She began her fitness career with an interest in body building but knows her celebrity clientele often want to look toned rather than muscular. Although she likes to occasionally "hit the steel," she trains to meet her clients' needs.
A while back, we shared with you that celebrity trainers are using Twitter, which is great for us ordinary folk. Following celeb trainers on Twitter is a great way to get the same advice that clients like Lauren Conrad, Lady Gaga, and Anne Hathaway get, except we don't have to pay! I know that a tweet isn't like getting a one-on-one boot camp workout with David Kirsch, but if he's handing out free fitness advice, I'm listening.
Hiring a personal trainer is a fabulous way to start or pump up a fitness routine, just don't rely on her too heavily because eventually you are going to need to learn to exercise on your own. Use your trainer to learn new moves, how to use the equipment, how to establish a routine, and to end a plateau. Whenever I work with a trainer, I always bring along a notebook so I can take notes and do the things I learned on my own.
Personal trainers are a great way to get motivated. Problem is that some of us can't afford one, or that we are just too shy to even go there. Well, what about a virtual personal trainer?
So it's January and you've vowed that 2009 will be the year you get in shape. If you're not sure how to get started, a personal trainer can teach you how to workout with all the challenges of new exercises and proper technique. Let's be financially realistic though.
A lot of gyms will lure you in with a few free sessions with one of their personal trainers when you sign up for a membership. I am a big fan of taking advantage of this offer, but don't let the gym pick your trainer. Instead, ask questions so you can learn a little bit about each of them and then pick the one that seems to suit you best.
If 2010 is your year to get in shape but you're not quite sure how to get started, meeting with a personal trainer is one way to get you on track. He or she can map out a plan to help you reach your weight-loss and fitness goals by giving you exercise tips, nutrition advice, and much-needed motivation and support.
The only issue is that sessions aren't cheap at about $50 or more a pop.
Harley Pasternak is a busy guy. In about the span of a week, he left his training duties on the Lady Gaga tour in Europe, headed home to LA to see 10 clients, and then crossed the Pacific to Hawaii for two more. When I finally caught up with him in Tampa, he was already planning his departure to Toronto, his childhood home.
