Every year as Valentine's Day approaches, I become weary of the dozen red roses cliché. Beautiful as they may be, the more pervasive the blooms, the more impersonal. So I got in touch with celebrity floral designer Jeff Leatham to give us some tips on creating a high-design floral arrangement that'll make your Valentine's Day décor much more special — without breaking the bank.

Flipping through Luc Roymans's photography portfolio, I was struck by this image of an oversize, sculptural vase on a dining table. While the tendency for a vase of this size is usually to fill it with tall, overwhelming blooms, I love the way that this vase has been underfilled.
Using only a few stalks of Bells of Ireland, the vase, not the flowers, takes center stage.

We're divided at Sugar. Some women say it's exciting and romantic to receive a bouquet of flowers at work. Yet others — while they recognize it's a nice gesture — turn red from all the attention it attracts.

For a quick, cheap pick-me-up, treat yourself to a grocery store bouquet. Then, instead of plunking the whole lot into a large vase, separate each flower and give it a place of honor in an individual vase. You can cut short stems and use jelly jars and votive holders to add varying height to the arrangement.

It's not all about balsam wreaths and spruce trees this holiday season. When it comes to decorating with the green stuff, there's a lot more to choose from than needled varieties. From poinsettias to cactus, see my favorite ways to decorate with plants and flowers this holiday season.

If you're squeezed for space on your Thanksgiving table (and let's face it, who isn't?) try this easy idea. Instead of placing a pretty bouquet front and center on your dinner table, move it to a side table or buffet instead. This will free up room for the turkey and stuffing, and will also avoid any accidental tipping of the bouquet.

If you live with someone who has a total aversion to the color pink, you can still add it to your house in small doses. The easiest way? By using flowers, of course!

Homeowners (and renters as well) tend to only install window boxes on the first floor of their houses. But I love the way the boxes of geraniums on this four-story white building look. On second thought, they're almost too healthy looking; they may be fake, and perhaps it wouldn't work on a more traditional house.

As a parting present to a friend, Sugar staffer (and OnSugar manager!) sabs creatively crafted a floral arrangement — made entirely out of fresh, edible vegetables! The result was a stunning centerpiece that, like a flower cake, would be a thoughtful (and edible!) gift for someone who avoids sugar.
I loved the idea so much that I had to ask sabs how she did it.

There are plenty of wonderful vases in the world to display your bouquets. But let's be honest, the flowers themselves are where it's at. So why not upcycle some objects you already own to display those stems?
