DIY: Organic Fly Trap

If you don't feel like spending your endless Summer chasing flies around with a swatter, a fly trap may be more like it. I recently came across a DIY for making an organic fly trap, and since this season goes hand-in-hand with the little pests, I decided to summarize it for you. You should have most, if not all, of the supplies already in your home.

Supplies:

A two-liter soda bottle (used)
Sharp knife
A wire hanger
Match, lighter, or stove gas flame
Electric tape
Bait (like a small piece of meat or dog poo mixed with water!)

To hear the steps, read more.

Remove the bottle cap.
Cut through the bottle a third of the way down.
Place the bait in the base of the bottle (the bottom two-thirds).
Invert the top third of the bottle, and slide it into the base.
Tape the two pieces of the bottle together.
Bend some wire into a U shape (for hanging), with ends angled inwards.
Heat up the ends of the wire, and bore two holes into either side of the bottle by pressing with the hot wire.
Make sure the wire is securely hooked into the bottle.
Now, hang your fly trap and relish in fly-less, chemical-free bliss!

Virgin Atlantic Eases Flying Fears With a New App

I wouldn't go as far to say that I'm one of those people with a fear of flying, but when I hear a weird sound under the wing, or there's a loud clunking noise right before take off, I can't say I easily shake it off.

During a family trip once, my dad ended up sitting beside a woman who was beyond terrified to fly. She was not only crying uncontrollably, but she also clenched both of my dad's hands during takeoff. . .a relaxing way to start the trip for him! Well Virgin's Richard Branson has decided it's high time (ha ha, get it?!) that he fixes this anxiety to fly problem and in doing so, Virgin has just launched a new Flying Without Fear app. The app costs $5, but it's said to include relaxation exercises and fear therapy, and a customized program to prepare you for future flights. It also comes with a fear attack button for emergencies and you get 2,000 bonus Virgin points, just for signing-up!

I'm a bit of a skeptic, but for $5 it's worth taking for a test flight. I can just see it now - everyone being calm and collected until the flight attendant says, "You must now turn off all wireless devices, including iPod Touches and iPhones." Yikes!

What's The Deal With: Fruit and Fruit Flies

Oh how I love the fresh fruits and veggies of summer. My counter is full of ripening fruit and it seems that the fruit flies love my produce nearly as much as I do. Let me tell you, I am not too fond of fruit flies and am curious - How do they get in my kitchen?

Here's the deal. Fruit flies lay their eggs on fermenting fruit NOT fresh fruit, so when the eggs hatch, the larvae have yeast to munch on. So if the fruit you bring home has already begun to ripen, it may have eggs on it, and they'll hatch at your house. More often though, contrary to what you may think, fruit flies live outdoors. So if you bought fresh fruit from the store and it's ripening on your counter, chances are the fruit flies got a good whiff and flew into your kitchen from outside.

There are many ways to get rid of them:

Don't leave food on the counter to ripen. If that's not possible, wrap your fresh fruit in sealed ziploc baggies before they ripen so the flies can't smell your fruit as easily.
If you do leave fruit on your counter, eat it before it gets too ripe.
Don't leave dirty dishes around. As soon as you're done eating, wash them immediately. Also be sure to clean your sink thoroughly - fruit flies can live off the scum in the drain.

Keep your trash can clean and take the trash out once a day so you don't have food scraps rotting in your kitchen - trash is a fruit fly's dream come true.
Fruit flies love wine, beer, and soda, so rinse off your bottles and cans before placing them in the recycling bin.
If you have a bad infestation, you can make a fruit fly trap: take a cup or shallow dish and pour something sweet in the bottom like a little wine, juice, or some watered down honey. Or you can use a ripe piece of fruit, like a banana. Then cover it with plastic wrap or a clean drink lid and poke a small hole into the middle of it. The flies are attracted to the sweet smell, so they fly in and can't get out.

Mile High Moves: Flying Tips

Flying during the holidays means the flights are fully booked and you and your fellow passengers are crammed like sardines, packed very close, too close, into tiny seats with no leg room. Here are a few hints to keep your body happy while stuck in your plane seat.

Straighten your knees often during the flight, sliding your heels on the floor. If you have luggage stowed under the seat in front of you, lengthen your legs as far as you can.
Circle your ankles multiple times in each direction and do this multiple times during the flight.
Place your right ankle on your left knee, with right knee out to the side and bend forward at your hips. This is a stretch for your fanny.
Twist upper body and look at your neighbor and hold for a few seconds, then twist and look at your other neighbor.
Make your booty "wink" by squeezing one butt cheek, letting it relax, then squeezing the other. This promotes circulation and will hopefully keep you entertained for a bit.
Interlace your fingers, reach palms toward the ceiling, straighten your arms and STRETCH. Add little bends to each side if you have the room.

Superstar singers took to the stages in Chelmsford and Staffordshire for V Festival this weekend. Katy Perry, Lady GaGa and Alesha Dixon impressed on stage in their outlandish outfits. My girl FabUK has the lowdown on all the stylistas, and I've got videos of the big performances - check them out after the jump. Lily Allen took time out from the cricket to sing on stage, and musicians from both sides of the Atlantic entertained the crowds.

Brandon Flowers, Johnny Borrell, Dizzee Rascal, Mike Skinner, McFly, Natalie Imbruglia, Taylor Swift, Pixie Lott, Daniel Merriweather, James Morrison, Paolo Nutini, The Script and The Saturdays all performed. The big disappointment was Oasis were a no-show due to Liam Gallagher's viral laryngitis, but the big surprise was Amy Winehouse's appearance on stage with Pete Doherty and The Specials: you can watch her performance after the jump.

The Scoop: Woman Pays $32,000 to Fly With Her Dog

Nope, I didn't tack on some extra zeros - one woman paid $32 grand to fly her beloved Boxer (not shown here) in the cabin with her, business class no less. We know that air fees can add up, but an Israeli woman identified as Rivkah paid for the whole compartment to carry "Orchuk," his vet, and herself from Paris to Tel Aviv on Airline El Al. While she wouldn't discuss the price, Rivkah said:

He is my child, not a dog. And he deserves the best.
