Did you "thin-herit" food issues from your mother?

According to a poll conducted by teen magazine Sugar, girls ages 12 - 18 said that their mother's eating and/or dieting habits and views on food were the biggest influence on their own relationship to food. It was found that if a mom diets, she's twice as likely to have a daughter with an eating disorder.

I'm completely serious when I tell people that the Ferry Plaza farmers market is a major reason why I live in San Francisco - it would not be an overstatement to say that the first time I went there, it changed my view of eating. So I could barely contain my excitement when the market's organizer, the Center For Urban Education and Sustainable Agriculture, or CUESA, announced it would be instituting a Thursday farmers market with an emphasis on artisanal street food. Fine Living Network Will Soon Be the Cooking Channel

The Food Network will soon be getting a little sister. Yesterday, Scripps Networks Interactive announced it plans to launch another culinary channel next year to replace lifestyle channel Fine Living, or FLN. The new network, to be called the Cooking Channel, will debut in the Fall of 2010.

A third of FLN's programming is already food-related, but according to a release, the new channel will become a 24-hour network focusing on "food information and instructional cooking programming," as well as "food origins, culture, and history."

Scripps, which owns Food Network, Fine Living, HGTV, and DIY networks, certainly seems to be focusing more on food. At the beginning of this week, it publicized plans to expand Food Network to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. What do you think of the corporation's newest venture? Girl Crush du Jour: Food Party's Thu Tran

Thu Tran is a woman after my own heart. She loves art, food, and the absurd and has combined all these passions into her surreal and fun Internet show, Food Party, which has been picked up by IFC (Independent Film Channel) and debuts tonight.

Food Party is described on her blog as "a mind-bending, non-reality cooking show with Thu Tran as your hostess, a cast of unruly puppets as culinary aides, and a cavalcade of fictitious celebrities as surprise dinner guests." On IFC, the show will run a short 10 minutes with no promises you'll actually get any cooking tips.

Tran, 27, graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art where she majored in glasswork. While a student there, she realized she loved both cooking with her roommate and making videos of their time in the kitchen. Collaborating with friends and her boyfriend, who helps her make the puppets on her show, this Pee-Wee's Playhouse of food shows took off, getting attention from a variety of websites before getting IFC's attention.

Anna Wintour in Minnesota: People Are Little Houses Here

"I'd just been on a trip to Minnesota, where I can only kindly describe most of the people I saw as little houses. And I just felt like there’s such an epidemic of obesity in the United States. And for some reason everyone focuses on anorexia."

On 60 Minutes last night, Vogue editor Anna Wintour recounted a recent trip to the Midwest and her "concern" with America's obesity crisis. It might surprise Anna that Minneapolis, MN, was ranked America's third most fit city, while New York City came in fifth on "the top fattest cities" list.

Slow Food Nation Highlights: Marketplace

Burning Question: Are Cajun and Creole Cooking the Same?

It's an age-old question: is there a distinction between Cajun and Creole cooking - or are they really just the same thing?

The answer is somewhere in between. Creole cooking evolved out of the cosmopolitan culture of New Orleans, a city affected by the influx of international colonists who settled there after the Louisiana Purchase. New Orleans's denizens adopted spices from Africa and the Caribbean, butter and cream from France, tomatoes from Italy, and peppers from Spain and took advantage of the abundance of oysters, shrimp, and crab abundantly available in the Gulf.

Cajun cooking developed in Louisiana's rural backcountry. Acadians drew from their French and Southern roots, cooking whatever could be farmed and trapped locally, along with other inexpensive ingredients such as crawfish, rice, beans, and pork fat. Some of Louisiana's dishes are distinctly Creole, like shrimp rémoulade. Others - take crawfish étouffée, for instance - are credited to the Cajuns. But certain dishes shared by both cuisines, such as jambalaya, possess subtler differences: the Creole version typically contains tomatoes, while its Cajun counterpart employs a roux.

Over time, as the two terms have been used more generically and interchangeably, the differences between Cajun and Creole cooking have become blurred, and food historians have taken to focusing on regional differences within the state.
