Food News: Restriction on Antibiotic Use in Livestock

After reading Michael Pollan's books - especially The Omnivore's Dilemma - and watching the new film Food Inc., I was pleased to read the news that the Obama administration is looking to restrict the use of antibiotics in livestock.

The principal deputy commissioner of food and drugs testified that feeding antibiotics to livestock to encourage rapid growth must stop, and that farmers should only be able to use the drugs with the supervision of a veterinarian. The reason behind this recommendation is that the rampant use of antibiotics has strongly influenced the development of bacteria immune to many treatments, rendering common antibiotics useless in fighting infections. This point of view has long been accepted by the medical community. According to estimates by the Union of Concerned Scientists, chickens, pigs, and cattle receive 70 percent of antibiotics used in the United States. While the American Medical Association backs the proposed restriction, it is no surprise that meat producers are opposed to it.

Good news for anyone following Weight Watchers...

Progresso Light, the only nationally branded light soup in the category, has teamed up with Weight Watchers to bring a canned soup with a POINTS value of zero to consumers nationwide this August. With only 60 calories and a whooping 4 grams of fiber per serving, Progresso Light is the first consumer packaged product in any grocery category to carry the Weight Watchers endorsement with 0 POINTS value per serving.

I don't even follow Weight Watchers but with flavors like Italian-Style Vegetable; Vegetable and Noodle; Savory Vegetable Barley; Homestyle Vegetable and Rice; and Southwestern-Style Vegetable, you better bet I'll be trying them out for taste.

Subway to Introduce Personal Pizzas in June

Another weird news post for you. Looks like Subway is deciding to add a personal pan pizza to its menu. Yep, we're talking about Subway, the sandwich place. I'm a little confused about this one, being that I've never really considered pizzas to be healthy and Subway's sort of got this "we're healthy" mantra. However, according to BrandWeek, Subway will add deep-dish style personal pizzas to the menu of 13,000 locations.

An employee at a test store located in the East Village section of New York City said they only sold two pizzas the first day of the test in late March, but are now are up about 25 a day. The biggest problem: patrons don't know about the product despite a prominent sign on the menu board, he said.

We'll have to wait until this June to see if patrons in other parts of the country are more observant. That's when the Subway pizza train hits locations.

The health food nut's arch enemy has been in the news a lot lately. Yep, I am talking about processed food. In this day and age, with our busy lives, it is hard to live without some processed foods. Here are three news stories that might just sway us to make a little more time when it comes to food and nutrition.

A microwave popcorn enthusiast was diagnosed recently with "popcorn lung" - a rare life threatening disease with the medical name broncheolitis obliterans. The diagnosing doctor believes the onset was caused by inhaling fumes of the extra buttery flavored microwave popcorn that contains the chemical diacetyl, which has been linked previously to the disease. The man ate two, and sometimes three, bags of the popcorn daily!
Just a caution, especially if you are looking to sleep, citrus flavor sodas can have more caffeine than colas. The consumer groups involved in a recent study are not anti caffeine; they just think caffeine content should be listed in the packaging.
This really comes as no surprise, but a new British study found food additives may make children more hyper active. The culprit here is artificial food coloring and preservatives. Although the study was not conclusive and is being questioned by some experts, the U.K. Food Standards Agency, which funded the study, has already revised its advice to parents about what to feed their children.
