Julia Roberts must be having a good weekend. On Friday, she was honored at the American Cinematheque Awards. Is it too much of an understatement to say that she is just as beautiful now as she was as an ingenue?

If you don't believe that big hair is back, here's pouf — er, proof. Last night at the Hollywood Awards, the always-soignée Hilary Swank appeared wearing a bouffant worthy of Ladybird Johnson. (Hers wasn't even the only crunchy-meets-sleek look of the night, just the most voluminous.) Hilary's long been known for a certain brand of demure elegance, and while this look was certainly classy, it was also a lot more formal and constructed than we usually see her hair.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler looked simply stunning on the red carpet tonight. She pulled all of her hair back in a not-too-perfect updo that looked right at home at the Emmys. Her makeup was equally as beautiful.

Taylor Swift chose a soft and romantic look for tonight's MTV Video Music Awards. Her hair looks like what you'd expect to see on a bride on her wedding day. Yes, it might be a little too formal for this occasion, but given her age and her innocence, I think it works well on Taylor.

English screenwriter and wife of Jonathan Ross, Jane Goldman, who often wears bright pink hair, decided to add in a pair of fake horns to adorn her long white dress on the red carpet tonight. I happen to think that an elegant awards ceremony shouldn't be mistaken for Halloween, however, it seems like jolly ole Jane has a sense of humour when it comes to formalities. What do you make of her her mini white horns, pink hair and subtle makeup look?

Last night at the Valentino: The Last Emperor screening in Los Angeles Anne Hathaway, Kelly Lynch and Nikki Hilton all arrived with their hair styled the same way. Apparently, the modern take of the classic chignon is to part hair down the centre and have the sides and back softly secured at the nape of the neck sans gels or harsh sprays to keep everything less structured. I love the way this looks and I think all of these ladies have managed to maintain a polished elegance without coming off matronly.

Formal wear was in order last night in NYC for the Metropolitan Opera's 125th anniversary gala at Lincoln Center. Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger looked picture perfect and totally gorgeous as ever hand in hand on the red carpet. Mary-Kate Olsen showed off a new glam look and it even looks like she got her hair done for the occasion, while Ginnifer Goodwin looked demure in black.

Watching your beauty budget due to the rough economy? Didn't have time for that root touch-up appointment? Or maybe you've been thinking about becoming a licensed cosmetologist, and you want to get in a little practice first.

While girls wore their hair in cute bobs or wavy flapper girl style, mens hair in the 1920's was super simple. Hair was slicked back with gel for a formal look that was thought to be both masculine and also elegant. Think of The Great Gatsby or the new Brideshead Revisited film and you get the picture.

Last night at the 2009 Critics' Choice Awards in Los Angeles, actresses Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, Kate Beckinsale, Angela Bassett, Kristin Scott Thomas and Evan Rachel Wood all arrived on the red carpet with their hair pulled back in chic updo's.
Even Angelina Jolie decided to go for a swept-up sleek ponytail, something we don't typically see on her when she's making a formal appearance. Out of all of these hairstyles, I like the Penelope's classic look the best and Evan's drapey and too-thick tendril the least.
