Game Over: Beer Pong Spreading Swine Flu

Frat boys have been called pigs before, but now they might be responsible for spreading swine flu. College partiers are being warned that they can catch H1N1 from beer pong.

Administrators from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute released this statement after a student contracted swine flu from the classic drinking game:

"While it might seem fun over the weekend, it will not be enjoyable when you and your friends are sick and missing class or midterm examinations."

Wait. Doesn't missing midterms sound more enjoyable than taking them?

I've always been wary of beer pong's potential health risks, so here's one more excuse to stay away from beer cups with dirty ping pong balls floating in them. Cheers!

Private Security Contractors Gone Wild in Afghanistan

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton got a letter on Tuesday from Project on Government Oversight (POGO), and I’m sure she didn’t like what she saw. It was reported that private security contractors ArmorGroup North America guarding the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, have been behaving not like professionals responsible for keeping American government workers safe, but like crazed frat boys on a particularly debaucherous Spring break.

What have they been up to? According to the letter, "peeing on people, eating potato chips out of [buttock] cracks, vodka shots out of [buttock] cracks (there is video of that one), broken doors after drunken brawls, threats and intimidation from those leaders participating in this activity."

Apparently, this has been going on under the not-so-watchful eye of supervisors, creating a kind of hazing environment that has caused many incoming guards to leave within a year of arriving. Some guards claimed that they actually had to barricade themselves in their rooms because they were afraid that if they didn’t participate in this depraved bacchanal, they would be physically harmed.

This would be unacceptable behavior coming from adults at a frat house, but not only is ArmorGroup North America funded by taxpayers (to the tune of $189 million a year!), but they're also in charge of safeguarding the lives of hundreds of diplomats and other officials who work in the embassy. A representative for the security contractors testified before Congress and said ArmorGroup has been fully staffed since January 2009, but a POGO rep says that they’re chronically understaffed, overworked, and now that these allegations are out - subject to hazing abuse.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly had this to say about the shocking news and graphic pictures (NSFW): "These are very serious allegations and we are treating them that way," adding that the State Department has "zero tolerance for the type of conduct that is alleged in these documents."

Bringing the Party With the Apple TV

When I first told you how much I was enjoying the Apple TV, I mentioned that I thought the device was best suited for party people. And I am party people. No, not in a frat-boy Brody Jenner way, but in that I love hosting people at my house.

The most basic hostessing rule is making sure people are entertained, and the Apple TV brings that in a couple key ways. My absolute favorite thing about the Apple TV - and I am aware of its many talents - is its slideshow feature. That's because my boyfriend and I take a ton of photos, and the people in the photos are usually the attendees of our parties, so they get to reminisce about other events while enjoying a new one.

Though it's true that other devices can display photo slideshows on your TV - I have used most, but they all have limitations: The PS3 requires you plugging in a thumb drive, an iPod has to be plugged in as well, a burned DVD demands much prep, and you usually end up with the same kind of visual effect; that is, one photo cycling at a time. The Apple TV's visual is much more dynamic, showcasing several photos at a time, so your guests don't experience awkward lulls of you and your lover gazing into each other eyes on last year's vacation. Likewise, because of that connection, you have access to your entire iTunes library with the Apple TV, thereby giving you the other thing every party needs: music. Don't hook up a stereo, don't futz with trying to figure out how to play music and the slideshow from the TV - the Apple TV manages it with ease, and your guests will love using the remote to treat it like a jukebox.

Plus, these days it seems that people spend more money on speakers for their TV rather than a traditional stereo system, so it makes sense to use your TV as your home music player.

Plus, the Apple TV can save a party - when things get dull, suggest movie night and start downloading a film right away.

Music, photos, entertainment - the Apple TV won't pop your popcorn or mix cocktails, but it will free you to do those very important things!

Would You Use This Snotty Shower Accessory?

Talk about a gag gift - because this thing certainly makes me nauseated. This shower gel dispenser ($17.95) attaches to your shower tile with suction cups, and dispenses gel or shampoo when you press the right nostril. I can't imagine ever having this in my home, but someone must be buying it, right? (Frat boys? Five-year-olds?) Is there any circumstance that would make you put this in your home?

Bruno (aka Sacha Baron Cohen) goes to GAYtona Beach, FL, for spring break and gets a bunch of yahoo frat boys to spell out the word party and say "Whoo!" in endless variations. What they don't anticipate is what he asks them to say into the camera towards the end. Whoopsies! It's worth the wait, my friends.
