If Only This Ad Were on the Endangered List...

I firmly believe the beauty industry can help women feel confident and look their best. But when it comes to nonsense like this Belgian ad for a natural cosmetics company, I want to go concealer-free out of righteous rage. The ol' before-and-after shot transforms a scruffy woman into the typical "hot" vixen. The tagline: "No need to be ugly to save the planet." Nice, huh?

Look, I know it's a joke, but am I the only one who's tired, really tired, of this sort of thing? I know it sounds funny coming from a beauty-lovin' lady, but this ad exemplifies the worst of beauty marketing. I mean, it's not a sin to have acne or messy hair, so why shame women who don't fit that overly Photoshopped ideal? And if you are out saving whales, isn't that accomplishment more meaningful than having perfectly arched brows? (By the way, I know tons of beautiful environmentalists, some of whom love bright red lipstick and others who wouldn't wear makeup even if a spotted owl begged them to.)

Plenty of beauty companies promote their products through positive messages. So why, in 2009, are some ad agencies still taking a fearful, sexist route?

GS: What’s your motto?
MWB: PLAY MORE PINBALL!!

GS: Where are you from?
MWB: "I'm just a small town girl. Living in a lonely world."
But for now, I'm in Kansas City. Go Chiefs. . . wait . . . Go Royals. . . crap! Go [insert hockey team here] . . . oh I give up!

GS: What do you do?
MWB: What don't I do? I'm a project mangler. . .er, manager. I'm also daddy, husband, pinball repairman, family handyman, and Chips Ahoy connoisseur (did I spell that right?).

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
MWB: All encompassing. If it's funny, I'll laugh. I laugh at everything from mundane booger jokes to the totally irreverent.

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?
MWB: I don't know if I can pick one. I've seen so many of them . . . can you name them all for me again? (GS: After some pressure, I squeezed it out of MWB). MWB: Who invited the lightweight? with the old lady holding the big can o' beer and spewing in the trash can, and Johnny Slimeball in the foreground. My mom and I sat and made up stories for that picture all day long.

GS: Who’s the cutest funny man and funny woman?
MWB: We tell my 16-month-old son that he's "such a funny man" all the time . . . does he count? He's the cutest if you ask me. But I don't guess I've ever judged a comedian by the way they look. Well, except Dustin Diamond, but he's on the wrong end of the spectrum for this conversation.

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
MWB: Male: Tough one to call. Top two that I can think of are George Carlin and Billy Connelly. The Amazing Jonathan, Rodney Carrington, older Larry the Cable Guy (back when he used to do daily radio), Red Peters, and that goofy little dude with cerebral palsy from Last Comic Standing all get some honorable mentions. You can have Eddie Izzard. Female: This is tougher. The only bit that really stands out that I can even remember as just having me hurting from laughing was a bit by Ellen DeGeneres way back when. It was a bit about the great fun you can have with your cat if you superglue a hamster to a Frisbee. Good stuff. I don't even have any honorable mentions that come to mind. You can have Eddie Izzard.

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?
MWB: That's easy. The Princess Bride. It's my favorite MOVIE of all time. You can find a quote from that movie to fit any situation you come across in life except for two. Funerals and this questionnaire. Hmmm.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
MWB: Canceled. All the best shows are. Can I get an "amen" from all the Michael Bluth fans out there?

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
MWB: As soon as you post my bio as GiggleSugar reader of the week I will!!

Miss Sassy Gruaig Rua has clearly not changed much since she was a fiery little tot. Our friend from Ireland tells us what she likes about GiggleSugar and throws in a joke at the end to boot! Yay, Gruaig Rua!

GS: What’s your motto?
GR: “When life gives you lemons, just add vodka.” It’s so true! Seriously though, my favourite motto is “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today” - James Dean. I’m managing the first part, just struggling with the second part. But I’m working on it!

GS: Where are you from?
GR: Ireland, The Emerald Isle, The Land of Leprechauns and Guinness, Top o’ the Morning. I’ll stop now

GS: What do you do?
GR: I work for the government. I’m tempted to leave it at that so everyone will imagine that I am this glamorous undercover agent, but no. I work for the local government county council offices. You know, I’m too lazy to explain it so I’ve copied the mission statement from our website! “Cork County Council is a local authority established by statute whose corporate purpose is to enhance the physical, social, cultural and economic environment of the county in a sustainable and socially inclusive manner, so as to improve the quality of life of its citizens.”

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
GR: Childish and sarcastic. Could I BE anymore like Chandler Bing?

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?
GR: Anything to do with dogs! Seriously. I’m a canine-aholic! I also love the Family Guy posts. And I really miss Pearl – she’s a legend!

GS: Who’s the cutest funny man and funny woman?
GR: The love of my life will always be Mr. George Clooney. Ok, so he’s not technically a “comedian,” but he’s a funny guy! As for a good looking female comedian, I’m stumped. That’s terrible isn’t it?! Oooooh, I’m going to say Tyra Banks, although I don’t think she’s intentionally funny on ANTM, but I sure do laugh my ass off!

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
GR: I just love Kath & Kim. I ordered the Series 4 DVD online and when I got home from work today, it was here!! I’m not ashamed to say I did a little dance around my bedroom I also love Catherine Tate, the woman is a genius. As for the male of the species, I’m going to go with a duet – David Williams and Matt Lucas of Little Britain. Genius.

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?
GR: Just one? Too hard! My favourite depends on my mood. I love Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Princess Bride, Little Miss Sunshine, Old School and…….my guilty pleasure….White Chicks. I know, I know! The funniest movie I’ve seen recently is Superbad. Ahhhh, McLovin.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
GR: It would be Ugly Betty. Seriously. My office seems to have gradually transformed into “Mode.” Each day there are prettier and more stylish girls walking the halls. And the two colleagues I go to lunch with look like freakin' supermodels – I’m like an oompa-loompa walking between them!

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
GR: Well, I tried a lookalike website earlier this year and it said that I looked like Audrey Tautou. Hah, I wish I did! Also listed were Shannen Doherty and Sophia Bush. But the one I most looked like was Thora Birch. It’s only in a couple of specific pictures, but it’s uncanny!

GR free-for-all: I’m 28, but feel like I’m still 19. I’m living at home
with my parents (god love 'em!) because I’m desperately trying to save for my upcoming world travels. Yes, indeedy, if everything goes according to plan next year, I should to be heading to Australia for 12 months. Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed people! I’m also completely and totally obsessed with dogs. Amazingly though, I just have the one – my golden retriever Holly. I just adore her!! She’s a bit of a nutter, like her mama! If and when I get my own place, I hope to adopt lots more fuzzy friends. I’ve had several people tell me that they can see me in five years, living in a foreign land, driving one of those small convertible jeeps, with about 15 dogs hanging out on the back seat. They forget to mention that Mr. Clooney will be in the passenger seat……And finally I’m going to share my favourite joke: Two nuns are driving down a road late at night when a vampire jumps onto the bonnet. The nun who is driving says to the other, "Quick! Show him your cross." So the other nun leans out of the window and shouts, "Get off our f*cking car."

GS: What’s your motto?
NB: "Working hard or hardly working!" or "Give peace a chance."

GS: Where are you from?
NB: The one and only Hooosier state! We have only one of the best and hottest quarterbacks ever. It's not as boring as some may think. Go Colts!

GS: What do you do?
NB: I do my cipherin' and studies because I'm a full-time student . . .Yay or nay? Hmm?

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
NB: I'd say I'm witty and sarcastic most of the time. It can vary from day to day; sometimes I laugh for no reason at all and get abnormal looks from others.

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?
NB: I thoroughly enjoy WTF?! and Dumbass of the Day!

GS: Who’s the cutest funny man and funny woman?
NB: Stephen Colbert is definitely a stud in his own way. His sense of humor makes it all the better, right? I think Sandra Bullock receives the best-looking funny woman award. You can't beat Miss Congeniality!

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
NB: This is tough! I'd say Robin Williams or Jerry Seinfeld. It's a close call. Kathy Griffin wins the best female comedian, no doubt! I literally cry when I watch her specials or her hysterical show, My Life On the D List on Bravo!

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?
NB: Only one movie comes to mind when I think funny . . . Airplane! They're cracking jokes in every other line in that movie. Surely you can't go wrong with Airplane! No you can't, and don't call me Shirley!

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
NB: It would be a hardcore comedy. I have some of the craziest friends with lots of crazy ideas. I'm guessing it would be something along the lines of Jackass.

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
NB: A stranger told me I look like Jennifer Love Hewitt once. I beg to differ!

GiggleSugar Reader Spotlight: Kiddylnd

You can always spot our reader of the week, Kiddylnd, by the cute pit bull avatar that represents her. She's funny, kind (she fosters pit bulls and tells a moving story about an old friend, Pride), and reminds me how much I love to get to know my readers! GS: What's your motto?
KL: "Move over bacon!" No, that's not it. "Help control the pet population, have..." No, that's not it either. Motto, eh? Well, I'm a big fan of "Do unto others, unless they bug the sh*t out of you, then screw 'em!"

GS: Where are you from?
KL: Seattle, Washington. I live 3 1/2 blocks from the house I grew up in. Sheltered, I know. I'd rather be sheltered in a city. I'm not a country girl AT ALL. Plus, living in the land of coffee is the best thing ever. We seriously have a corner with a Tully's across from a Starbucks, across from a soon to be Peet's, with a local coffee shop two doors down, a tea store next to that, and another Starbucks inside the Safeway next to the Tully's.

GS: What do you do?
KL: I work at an animal shelter selling pet licenses and taking all you guys' money! It's both the most fulfilling and saddest thing ever. On the plus side, when I'm having a bad day, all I need to do is snuggle up with a pup!

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
KL: Sarcasm, with a hint of third grade potty talk. I'm quick with the wit, but only out of necessity-I gotta keep up with my friends!

GS: What's your favorite GiggleSugar post?
KL: Are you serious? I have to pick just one?! I'm gonna go with any of the douchebag posts, particularly Portrait of a Douchebag since, sadly, I remember a time when I would have thought this dude was all that. Sad, so very sad.

GS: Who's the cutest funny man and funny woman?
KL: Hmmm...I don't think of funny people as being cute. Is that wrong?

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
KL: Kevin Smith is the smartest, funniest out there. He should do stand-up. His movies are too under appreciated. Margaret Cho is another fave. You can't miss with her! Others would be Ellen, Paula Poundstone, Stephen Colbert. I do enjoy some Carlos Mencia, but not all the time. I mostly like the "beaner" jokes since I'm a "beaner..."

GS: What's your favorite comedy of all time?
KL: Cry Baby. If you have not seen this, it's a must. Johnny Depp in a 21 Jump Street era, Ricki Lake, and a trying-to-break-free from the porn business Tracy Lords.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
KL: The Jerk. Kidding! I haven't ever really thought of that. In my late teens, Party Girl (minus the getting arrested). I don't know now. Sad. I'll have to think on that one.

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
KL: No. I only look like me.

KL free-for-all: I love the randomness of life! I like to run, but in Seattle in fall that can be a challenge because I'm such a girl I can't get my hair wet! I was always teased by my friends for being the "mom" of the group. (I blame them for me becoming one so early on.) I have a nine-year-old son who is the light of my life. I let him watch things he shouldn't, like Jay and Silent Bob. He's got a great sense of humor, and we laugh all the time. All of my friends are lesbians. I'm still not sure how that happened. Probably because I get to know people first, then find out later. I mean my best friend I've known since we were eight years old, so I obviously didn't know then! It's fun though, because I can gross them out with stories of my sexploits. I don't drink much (anymore!), but I love a nice Riesling, and I LOVE me some Asian Pear Sake. I love animals, and have some VERY strong opinions about animal care and sheltering. Don't breed or buy, while shelter pets die! Oh, and Hello Kitty rocks.

Is it me?

My boyfriend and I get along so well because we both have this weird (what I consider great) sense of humor. Lately, however, he never gets serious - about anything.

He always jokes about finding other girls extremely attractive.. for example, when he sees a good looking girl - he tells me to pretend I'm his sister. Or if we're riding in the car, he'll tell me to 'duck'. I fake laugh.. 'ha' 'ha'. Really funny. Or not.

It used to be funny, but now it's just getting irritating. I informed him that he really needed to stop informing me that he could get any girl he wanted because it was really starting to bother me.. but he hasn't stopped. We go skiing every week at this local lodge and there are usually 'Coors Light' models inside the bar that pass out free stuff.. well we usually joke with them and what not. My boyfriend ran inside to use the bathroom, while I waiting for him outside, and when he came out he started telling me how the Coors Light girls' stopped him.

They apparently asked him if I was his girlfriend or his sister and he was like, "Guess what I told them?" When I asked what.. he told me he told them I was his sister. I, clearly, did not find this HALF as humorous as he did. My feelings were seriously hurt. It is one thing to joke with me about it.. but to tell a complete stranger - not in my presence - who approached him that I was his sister!! I feel like this should send me several RED flags.

When he saw how hurt I was he apologized but could not for the life of him understand why I didn't think it was funny. He assured me that he didn't even think the girls were cute.. and insulted my sense of humor.

Is this just me? Should I be okay with that? Am I being ridiculously stupid for moving forward with a guy that jokes that I am his sister to complete strangers? Or is he right, am I completely overreacting and need to lighten up? Ugh.. I am so confused where I should be on this one.

GiggleSugar Reader Spotlight: GIOVS

GIOVS, GiggleSugar's resident heartthrob and the first guy to be spotlighted, doesn't just look like an Italian movie star, he's also genuinely sweet and silly. We wanted to recognize that GS has male fans, too, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! Be sure to check out his pictures in the gallery at the end of the interview.

GS: What’s your motto?

GIOVS: Life is about the little details. Also, the people that you need to know will appear without a call--they'll just show up.

GS: Where are you from?

GIOVS: I'm from Baja California, in the south of California, specifically from the municipality of Tecate, where Tecate Beer and famous bread is made, and of course, the world knows wines from the Baja peninsula. I have lived here all of my life (I'm 19) but in August I'm going to move to Guadalajara (in the center of México) for university...

GS: What do you do?

GIOVS: I´m a full time student now. A few months ago I worked in Telcel, a mobile communication company, like Cingular or T Mobile, but I left it to go to school. Now I just write articles, and I am working on a book, but I haven't finished it yet.

GS:: What's your book about?

GIOVS:: An epic tale about people from all walks of life and all sexual orientations....

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?

GIOVS: My sense of humor is a little weird, because some days I laugh at everything, some days I laugh at myself, but I always have a smile for everyone. If someone smiles at you, you have to smile back. You can make anyone happy by smiling at them. My sense of humor is a little grown up for my age. I prefer smart jokes, but whatever, a joke is a joke, and sometimes I like the dumb jokes.

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?

GIOVS: I like all the WTF?! and Products Of The Day, but I think I don't have a specific one because I think most of them are great. I visit the site on my laptop in class (GS: Uh oh! We're contributing to the distraction of a student!) and I can´t see the videos because they're too loud, so I prefer pictures. When I go home I watch the videos and I like to read the other members' comments--they are great! Everyone thinks differently about the same thing so it's fun to compare ideas.

GS: Who’s the cutest funny man and funny woman?

GIOVS: For male comedian, I like Tiziano Ferro. For female, Paris Hilton. (GS: Come to think of it, she is a comedian! At least, I'm always laughing at her!)

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?

GIOVS: My favorite male comedian is Adal Ramones, from the TV show "Otro Rollo." The female comedians I love are Tina Fey and Rachel McAdams, but I guess Rachel's more of a dramatic than comedic actress.

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?

GIOVS: I guess Mean Girls, because I like the war between students in the school-- popular, geeks, jocks, etc… I also like the Scary Movie films...

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?

GIOVS: I think Mean Girls. When I worked, they told my friend and me that we were like characters in the film. My friend Richard is the Mean one, my friend Grys (a Sugar member, too) is the Meaner, but everybody says I’m the Meanest! I can handle that! Hahahaha...

GS: Do you look like someone famous?

GIOVS: I don´t know, sometimes when I’m at the mall people will ask if they can take pictures with me, say hello or just stare at me, but I don´t know who they're confusing me with. (GS: They're staring at you because you're cute! ) A cousin says I look like this guy Roger, a Latin ZZ Disney Channel host, but I don´t think so.

GS: Free for all. I could say so many things. I feel honored to be selected as the reader of the week. This is a large community, we're all so different with different ideas. We all think differently because our minds are as diverse as the whole world. I hope to meet people from many places because I like to know different people's opinions about the same thing. People inspire me to write. Don´t ever shut up--scream what you think because the world can be better if we want it to be. I appreciate the Sugar Network because it's a place where I can share my ideas and learn new ones. My goal would be to have my own column, but if not, we have the forums, the comments and the polls to share with each other. Harlow Is So Cute! Nicole and Joel Seem To Think So Too

We all let out a collective "awwwww" when we first saw the Nicole and Harlow People cover and now we have a look at the full inside spread. I don't want to jump the gun, but seriously, she's gotta be one of the cutest little munchkins ever and Nicole and Joel look so great (especially her hair) coo-ing over their baby. The whole photospread is unbelievably sweet and the interview from the new parents is just as heartwarming. Can you tell I love it or do you need me to gush more? Here are some highlights:

Who was the first to cry?
Nicole: I cried right away.
Joel: Right when she came out, you know that cry that's like an internal cry where you shake a little bit? [To Harlow] You made me cry!

How did you pick the name?
Nicole: We couldn't agree. I wanted a hippie name and he wanted a more Biblical name.
Joel: I really like Jean Harlow the actress, and she likes Shalom Harlow the model. Harlow's cool because it feels like a classic name.
Nicole: And no one has it.
Joel: Winter was so serene and quiet and that's how she is.
Nicole: I always liked the name Kate, but I knew I'd never name my kid that because it was just too plain.

Do you have help at home?
Joel: We don't have a nanny. We have our moms. They've helped us a lot.
Nicole: And we have to give credit to Benji [Joel's twins brother]. He lives six houses down. He babysits, like really babysits.
Joel: There was a day when I'd been at work all day and Nicole hadn't left the house for 48 hours, and I was like, "Let's go to a restaurant down the street," and Benj was with the baby. Then someone said they read somewhere we were out all the time. It's crazy. You leave the house for one hour and eveyone's like, "She's out! She's leaving the baby!"

Has Harlow met Paris Hilton?
Nicole: Yeah. They went to the Ivy. Just kidding. I have to say, all of my friends, their demeanor completely changes when they're around the baby. When they come in the house they're really mellow and careful and sweet with her. And when you're with a baby, you don't think, like, "Oh, I'm this person." She spits up on you and throws up on you and goes to the bathroom and passes gas.

Have you talked about how you want to raise Harlow?
Nicole: Joel joked my whole pregnancy that he thought he would be the strict parent because I'm so laid back and free-spirited.
Joel: And she's the strict one!
Nicole: And since she was born, I've been so protective. Now Joel's like, "I'm going to be the fun parent!"
Joel: Nicole can tell the difference between a whine and a cry. I'm like, "Oh, she's making a noise, I gotta go in there." And Nicole's like, "Let her self-soothe for a minute and see how she does."
Nicole: I'm with her all the time. And she was a part of me for so long. I know when something's wrong.

It's funny what a difference a year makes for Nicole and Joel - clearly Harlow is the start of something new and amazing for the young parents. I can't wait to see more of her (and what Nicole dresses her in, of course). I gotta say, this whole thing just makes me smile.

Alicia Silverstone: Inspiring Animal Lover and Vegan

Alicia Silverstone, well-known for her role in the movie Clueless is one of the more vocal animal lovers out there. It is her love of animals that inspired her to become vegan and it helps her stay trim. So what is the deal with eating vegan?

Vegans believe it is morally wrong to eat or use anything that came from an animal. Vegans don't eat meat, eggs, dairy products like cheese and ice cream, gelatin, or honey. Strict vegans do not wear leather, fur, feathers, pearls, bone, silk, wool, or use lanolin.

Vegans study products to figure out what ones are cruelty-free (not tested on animals) and contain no animal ingredients. For instance, Alicia uses products from Kiss My Face and Burt's Bees because they are not tested on animals. Vegans feel animals have rights and deserve to be treated with respect.

Along with compassion for animals, Alicia also believes in making a conscious effort to have a positive effect on our world . She uses canvas bags instead of plastic ones, and she believes in recycling to decrease waste that goes into land fills.

Fit's Tips: You don't need to become a vegan to be healthy and environmentally conscious. You can opt for products that are cruelty free, as well as buy free-range meat and cage-free eggs whenever possible. And look for milk that clearly states it's rGBH-free.

GiggleSugar Reader Spotlight: Colormesticky

Today's GiggleSugar spotlight shines on colormesticky. Combining the yin of sweet with the yang of snark, colormesticky's comments never fail to entertain. Read more about this funny animal lovin' lady! And be sure to view the gallery of images after the interview.

GS: What's your motto? CMS: I don’t really have a mantra or motto that I live by, but if I did it would probably be something along the lines of “I’ll try anything once if it won’t get me arrested.”

GS: Where are you from? CMS: I was raised in Oregon, but I moved to LA when I was 19 and I’ve been here ever since. I’ve been trying to convince my husband we should move, and maybe one day I’ll be victorious. I miss my family, and I miss having seasons.

GS: What do you do? CMS: The main reason I moved to LA was to be a professional makeup artist. I had six years of theatrical experience and went to school for special effects, then I realized I wasn’t willing to starve for my art. I worked at a bookstore for about three years, decided I wanted benefits and more money, and became an admin at a large corporation. I’ve been doing it for two and a half years, and I’m totally digging benefits, steady work, and being home by 5:00.

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor? CMS: Pleasantly eccentric.

GS: What's your favorite GiggleSugar post of all time? Your least? CMS: I’m kind of biased--my favorite is my Auggie dog’s Pet of the Week post. I love Pet of the Week, and I love most of the animal stuff. And I heart Mocha the broccoli-eating hamster! My least favorite is still that scary dog-boyfriend thing from way back when. (GS: Banner ad.) *Shiver* That ad still creeps me out.

GS: Who's the cutest funny man and woman? CMS: There are a few guys--I love Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Engvall. As for a woman, I’ll go with Ellen DeGeneres. She’s hilarious and adorable, and she does it without being mean or foul.

GS: Favorite male and female comedian? CMS: Male--probably Eric Idle. I saw him speak a couple years ago, and he’s just as absurd in person. Female--Madeline Kahn. My God, was she ever funny. (GS: I totally agree with you there. She was genius in Young Frankenstein!)

GS: What's your favorite comedy of all time? CMS: Most of my favorite movies are comedies. It’s pretty hard to pick just one. I guess depending on what kind of mood I’m in, I’d say either Army of Darkness, The Princess Bride, or The Big Lebowski.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be? CMS: Either an episode of South Park or The Red Green Show. Fart jokes and duct tape, that about sums it up. My brother tells me it would me more like Scrubs: “Dysfunctional and obnoxious, yet caring and devoted”. He would so be Carla.

GS: Do you ever get told you look like someone? CMS: Not anymore, but when I was younger I was always told I looked like Alanis Morisette. The first time I chopped off my hair I looked like Annette Bening.

Sticky's Free For All: My pets are my family. If you don’t want to make your pet part of your family, you probably shouldn’t have a pet. They are not playthings for amusing you or your kids- animals have feelings too. To ignore them is more than thoughtless. It’s cruel. Don’t get it if you’re not going to pay attention to it. If you do get something and it ends up being a mistake, don’t be too proud to admit defeat and let it go to someone who will make it part of the family. It will save both you and the animal a world of unhappiness. If you want something cute and fuzzy that you don’t have to train or spend time with, put out feeders for birds or squirrels. In the meantime, I think your dog wants to come in. ☺
