What is it about french fries that makes us crave them so? Is it the saltiness? The crispy outside and soft, warm inside?

French women have long been admired for their ability to eat the rich, high-calorie foods of their cuisine without becoming overweight. They have inspired diet tips and books. This moderate food culture might have more to do with the government than we thought because the French Parliament seems to be legislating the two extremes of current weight issues.

The marketing masterminds behind Carl's Jr. know that sex sells: this year alone, the fast food franchise has featured lascivious spots starring seductresses such as Padma Lakshmi and Audrina Partridge suggestively scarfing down burgers. And CKE Restaurants, the parent company of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, won't stop there. To kick off its new French Dip Thickburger, Hardee's has brought on four feisty "French Maids" who will embark on a national tour, visiting stores and posing for photos.

Looks like I am not alone when it comes to my love of french fries since they topped many users' lists for favorite cheat foods. A lot of you offered some great suggestions for healthy alternatives. Check these out:
- shopgrrl suggested boiled, salted, edamame because they're both starchy and salty.
- I can't wait to try these mustard-roasted potatoes that syako likes.

Navigating through a restaurant menu is often tough, but it's even harder when you're navigating through yummy food that you're not totally familiar with. WebMD has created an easy choose/avoid list for the next time you eat Thai, Indian and French.
THAI: My personal take out favorite, but it's definitely tough to sort through the often extensive menus.

Francophiles, take note: Monday is Bastille Day, which means there might be a French food festival in your neck of the woods. This weekend also presents a fine selection of wine and beer tasting opportunities, not to mention a few of the more bizarre food fests I've found this Summer, including one surrounding the "world's largest catsup bottle." Check out my guide below, and tell me about any I've missed in the comments!
