Teachers Teach Mom and Dad a Thing or Two

The sneakers are glowing and the lunchboxes are fresh. It's time to head back to the little red school house for another year of education. Entering a new classroom promises never before seen math problems, spelling rules and lectures in science for sponge-like brains. While most everyone expects that type of learning, it is sometimes a different lesson that gets moms and dads fired up for a new year. Parents see their children grow every day, but it is a fresh perspective from their child's new teacher than can often offer them a new vantage point into their kiddo's life. An art instructor may spot a budding Van Gogh or the P.E. coach sees the next Mia Hamm. The reading teacher may see a writing future while the math tutor discovers a counting issue that needs special attention. What have you learned from your child's teachers?

One wouldn't think Gossip Girl Leighton Meester is the type to sport kicks during her offtime, but her ad for Reebok proves otherwise. "Leighton was chosen because she is the ultimate city girl," said a Reebok spokesperson. "These trainers are perfect for the modern urban woman, featuring Reebok's characteristic comfort and premium material use coupled with a fresh, adaptable look."

Too Snowy to Run Outside? Run in Snowshoes

Now that it's March most of us want to start thinking about Spring and warmer temps, but many of us are still covered in snow. If you're looking at a few more weeks of wintry weather, and the trails you want to run on are too powdery for sneakers with Yaktrak, then you might want to check out a pair of racing snowshoes. This pair made by Redfeather (on sale for $220), can be worn with your comfy running shoes or lightweight hiking boots. The titanium crampons underneath help you grip through snow and ice, and the lightweight aluminum frame helps you to stay on top of the snowy surface without sinking down. Racing snowshoes are narrower than regular snowshoes, so they allow you to keep your natural running stride.

If Spring feels miles away and you can't bare to be chained to a treadmill, running snowshoes will allow you to safely keep up your pace and endurance while enjoying the fresh air and challenging terrain outside. If you've never even considered running in snow, you may want to give it a try. Walking in the snow for 30 minutes burns 300 calories, but running in it for the same amount of time burns at least 500.

Over Thanksgiving I made the trip out to Philadelphia to see family. My husband convinced me that it was going to be way too cold to work out while we were there, so after much discussion and hesitation, I ditched my sneakers. Keep in mind that I bring my sneakers almost everywhere, but I let my hubby win this battle. He reminded me that since we were staying at a relative's house, it was not like I would have the option to hit up the hotel gym. I did bring some workout clothes so I could do stretches in my room, but left the sneakers at home thinking that he was right and there was no way I was going to brave the below-zero temperatures to run for one day.

Thanksgiving day comes along and I go outside for some fresh air and it is 70 degrees outside! I almost died. I would have absolutely loved to take a jog outside, especially since all the leaves were this gorgeous shade of yellow. What's even worse? Turns out that my relatives had just purchased a brand new elliptical machine for their home that I would have loved to try out. Me, I am sneakerless - awesome.

I was really very mad at my husband for being so against me bringing my sneakers and I was bummed at myself for not going with my gut. Next time, even if my husband kicks and screams about the valuable space they are taking up, my sneakers are coming along. Even if it is predicted to be freezing cold, you never know what is going to happen.

To me, being able to fit in a workout when I can is worth having to take only one scarf rather than two. Guess what is on my Christmas list from my hubby? Well Reebok Travel Trainers, of course!
