Do You Like Facebook's Reconnect Strategy?

I just read an article about Facebook's "reconnect" strategy - the newly implemented practice of featuring a friend you haven't interacted with in a while. They appear on the right side of the newly redesigned homepage. Facebook's explanation:

Facebook is only useful and relevant if you can connect with friends that matter to you. Now you also will begin seeing new Suggestions about people with whom you are already friends, including those who are new to the site. You will see just how much help your friends need by checking out the progress bar located below their profile picture on their profile. You can help them by writing on their Wall or sending them a message, so they have a chance to get involved in sharing as well.

Underneath your friend's photo: the prompt, "Help make Facebook better for her," or "Find more friends for him." What's any caring FB friend to do? While I'm not completely positive how the Facebook algorithms work, it's funny to see who they suggest (my grandmother, for instance). In general, I don't have a problem with the new feature - except if it starts trying to reconnect me with an ex-boyfriend, of course.

Do you like this feature, or would you prefer Facebook stopped making suggestions?

Website of the Day: Passive Aggressive Notes

Roommate frustrations? Lunch missing from your work fridge. . . again? Whether you've just been tempted to leave an angry, anonymous (or not-so-anonymous) note or you're actually guilty of leaving one, they can be pretty funny to those not involved in the squabble.

The website Passive-Aggressive Notes posts "painfully polite and hilariously hostile writings from shared spaces the world over" - aka the note that your co-worker posted on the office fridge for all to see. I've mentioned the site before, but check it out again for new features including "'Word of the Day," calling out a hilarious user comment, or the "Greatest Hits" and "Kerry's Favorites" with links to the site's most popular and founder's favorite content.

It's perfect for scrolling through if you need a laugh. Or, for the ultimate passive-aggressive payback, submit a note of your own to be included on the site.

Book Bag: Awkward Family Photos Blog Gets a Deal

One of my favorite web finds of the past few months, Awkward Family Photos, is moving from photo blog to photo album. In a fairly predictable development, the bloggers behind this brilliantly funny site just scored a book deal with Three Rivers press. So now you can have not only your awkward family photos adorning your coffee table, but other people's, too!

Bloggers Mike Bender and Doug Chernack have been hearing from agents every since the blog debuted in May; the book is slated for release in May 2010. If you need something to read between now and then, I've got you covered.

I'm glad to see quality blogs getting book deals, but I'm also skeptical. A concept like Awkward Family Photos is so perfect for the web - why confine it to the more static book format? Then again, it worked for Post Secret and Stuff White People Like. What do you think?

Make Your Own Animated Gifs With Gickr

I will be first one to admit that I find gifs unimaginably hilarious. Sure, there are some serious and professional uses for animated gifs, but all the ones I notice are the ridiculous and funny ones.

Obviously then, I want to make my own and now I can, with the website Gickr. Gickr is super easy to use; just upload your three similar picture files and click continue. Just make sure the images you use are not gigantic or it'll stop you in your tracks.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.
Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
Choose "Blog" and "Regular Post."
Give your story a "Title."
Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.
Click "Next."
Choose the audience for your story to "Website of the Day" in the dropdown menu.
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").
Change channel to "Technology and Gadgets."
Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
Click "I’m done" to submit content.

So join the Website of the Day group and share information about all your favorite sites! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Darth Vader in the Loo: Ian Pool's Superhero Art

Darth Vader definitely loses a little of his intimidation when you see him, uh, on the pot. Such is an example of Ian Pool's work - photography that portrays iconic superheroes and other geek characters in their "real," regular lives.

Check out the other photos on Pool's site for funny shots of the prosaic lives of characters we usually put on pedestals, like Spiderman taking a leak and Batman hanging out in a diner.

PBS Reaches the Masses With PBS Video

I often get the urge to step away from the funny YouTube videos and expose myself to something. . . educational. Gasp! Yes, you can find me watching just as many videos on Academic Earth and iTunes U, as I do on sites like Hulu. And now I've got a new one to add to the mix - PBS Video. PBS has just launched a new video portal (in beta) where you can find all sorts of clips and full length episodes from a variety of programs and topic areas. The site also gives you the ability to share videos with friends and family, or purchase a copy by clicking "Own It."

Lindsay Lohan's "Dating Ad" - Funny or Fail?

Last week, PopUS asked you if you thought Zac Efron's pool party comedy short - including Vanessa Hudgens, Nicole Richie, Brody Jenner and Joel Madden - was funny or not so much. Now Lindsay Lohan has uploaded a "dating profile" to the comedy site Funny or Die, and I want to know what you think? She makes fun of all the perceptions of her out there, including her recent split with DJ Samantha Ronson, her family, her partying and more. So, take a look and let me know - is Lindsay's skit funny, or does it fall short of that for you?
