Desire/Acquire: Clio Glass Hargreave Carafe

I've been aching to own the Clio Glass Hargreave Carafe ($120) since I first saw it about five years ago. It's so clever and fun! I love its modern pill shape and bright colors, and how its top becomes a glass. But I wouldn't use it enough to justify buying it; it would really just be a display piece. The new Jonathan Adler Pill Carafe ($48), made of double-cased handblown glass, is available in turquoise, tomato, yellow, smoke, and white. It's definitely not as striking as Clio's transparent glass design, but it does have its own appeal.

To be honest, it bugs me a bit that Adler is knocking off the work of other designers. He is one of few interior/product designers who has really made a name for himself (and is reaping the benefits of it) - can't he come up with his own designs? Just a reminder: his Utopia series was very clearly "inspired" by the work of Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad. Sorry to vent, but does anyone else agree?

Crave Worthy: Elizabeth Lyons Glass Decanters

I'm not much of a liquor lover (more of a wino), but I'm aching for these gorgeous glass decanters by sculptor and designer Elizabeth Lyons. I don't think I'd even bother filling them; they're delectable as is. The vibrant colors of the hand-blown glass alone are enough to keep me happy forever, but the oversize round stoppers really give them that extra kick. The decanters are available in a range of colors, and Lyons can even be commissioned to create something special for you. Prices are not listed, which often suggests that they're steep. You can pick up one for yourself at several boutiques on the East Coast, including Lyon's own glass studio, More Fire Glass Studio in Rochester, NY. Ahhh, love, love, love!

How-To: Clean Up Broken Glass

I broke a mercury glass votive in my bathroom last week, and I was kind of careless about cleaning it up. Long story short, I ended up with a piece of glass in my foot. Not. Fun. Since I don't wish the same fate for any of you, I thought I'd tell you how to clean up broken glass the correct way. The first step is to clean up the glass thoroughly and immediately. First, carefully pick up any large pieces and put them into a trash bag.
Then, sweep the glass as best you can into a pile and then into a dustpan.
Vacuum the entire area, even beyond where the glass fell, as it tends to shoot off several feet in each direction. Use your hose attachment on any crevices, such as the grout between your tile.
Now, you need to make sure all the tiny pieces are cleaned up. You can do this by dampening a paper towel and pressing it on the floor, making sure you do not touch the underside of the paper towel. Wipes, like Clorox Green Works Wipes, are great for this. If you're working with a large area, replace the towel and start with a fresh one after a few presses. You can also clean up these fine glass bits by laying duct tape on your floor and burnishing with a credit card to make sure it's smooth, and then lifting up the tape. This is more time-consuming, but works.
When you're finished, make sure to safely dispose of all of your paper towels in the trash can. Fini!

Ask Casa: I Spied This Table on The Bachelor . . .

Hi Dani,

Good news! Not only was I able to find a close match for this table, but it was also the least expensive of all of the tables I found. The Ikea Strind Coffee Table ($139) features two levels for organizing and decorating, as well as casters, which let you wheel this baby around wherever it's needed. It's made of nickel-plated steel finished with a clear lacquer, and since the glass is safety glass, you don't have to worry about any unfortunate party fouls or emergency room visits should it break.

I wasn't sure if you were more attracted to the chrome finish or the two levels on The Bachelor coffee table. With that in mind, I also gathered some similar tables that come in different finishes, as well as some that are only one level, to see if there's anything else that strikes your fancy.

DIY: Recycled Glass Chandelier

This holiday season, many of us may be throwing dinner parties, and expecting more guests than usual on a typical Saturday night. Maybe we'll pull spare seating out of the basement, or rent chairs, fold-out tablecloths, and white linens for the evening, but the last time I checked party rental shops didn't rent light fixtures. So, the next best thing is to fashion one of our own. With a few recycled materials and some tea lights, you can make a gorgeous, energy-efficient, glass chandelier that you may just end up hanging year-round. Make one to hang about each table, and your guests will be well-lit. Just add good food, wine, and conversation! To learn the steps, read more.

Supplies:

10-12 spare glass jars (mason jars, baby food, jam)
Circular gridded cooling rack
Thick and thin gauge wire
Beaded chain and locking links
1 large S hook
10-12 small S hooks
Wire cutters
Sand or small pebbles
10-12 tea lights

Here's how, from Ecologue:

Wash all your recycled materials.
Turn over your cooling rack, and at its center cross two lengths of the thick wire, looping their ends through the feet on the rack and twisting them to secure them.
Attach the large S hook by twisting the wire at the point where the two wires cross (at the center).
Under the lip of your jar lids, wrap the thinner wire around the tops three or four times, and tuck the ends underneath the wire to secure it.
Cut various lengths of beaded chain using wire cutters at twice the length you want them to hang from the cooling rack. You may consider a random arrangement or some sort of pattern for hanging.
Loop a piece of beaded chain through the thin wire on one jar, and then lock its ends together with the links. Do this with all the jars.
Fill the base of the jar with sand or pebbles, and then place a tea light on top.
Hang the cooling rack above your dinner table, or wherever you'd like it to be.
Then, hook your candle-filled jars with the small S hooks onto the cooling rack.
Use a long lighter to light them right before guests arrive, and fini!

The Big Chill

I don't know whether it's the sweltering heat or being cooped up inside on a sunny day, but when it's Summer, it seems all I want to do is kick back and relax in the sun, frosty cocktail in hand. My guess is that the person in charge of cleaning all the fingerprint smudges from these doors was the prankster behind this. The glass is not a door handle, but everyone seems to think otherwise- so a very sneaky someone decided to teach folks a lesson and get the last laugh.
