Declaring Indigo Totally Blue Me Away

New for Autumn 2009 is the Lancôme Declaring Indigo Collection created by famed and funky makeup artist Aaron De Mey. It consists of fifteen new colours and two brushes with a definitive, bold and courageous yet wearable palettes of electric blues, golds and reds. It was inspired by Brigitte Bardot and Simpone de Beauvior, French women with a spirited and sexy, unconventional style. According to a press release, De Mey said,

"My favorite colors are pure, saturated, powerful shades that work fabulously on their own. The colors I chose for the collection, indigo and red, are intense, primary colors, emblems of Paris and the French Revolution. I will always remain faithful to the colour gold for its brilliant shine and ability to bring an elegant, illuminating touch to make-up."

I’ve been playing with the line for about a couple of weeks now and the two products I’m most excited about are the Palette Libertè in Indigo Royautè (£35), a crazy cool powder shadow quad comprised of two golds (one pale and sparkly and the other a deeper bronze), a metallic blue and another bright blue shade enhanced with gold flecks. The other compact I'm kvelling over is an insanely illuminating face and body powder called Rose Libertè. Whilst at first glance it looks intimidating, it happens to create a beautiful and gentle (I promise) glow.

Ink Artliner in Black Carbon Ink: (£19) is a waterproof, smudge-proof cream liner that comes in a cool frosted jar. There's also a new eyeliner brush (£15) to go along with it that was specifically designed by De Mey to help create a more precise line.
Le Vernis in Pure Gold, Indigo Paris, Rouge Panthère: (£14 each) are the three new nail varnishes for Autumn. The two most noteworthy shades are Indigo Paris (bright blue metallic) and Pure Gold (a medium, super glossy, super shimmery gold). The last shade, Rouge Panthère is a fiery crimson older shade of red that has been brought back just for this collection.
Color Fever Matte Lipstick in Red Avant-Garde, Red Paris and Red Libertine: (£17.50 each) are comfortable matte lipsticks thanks to jojoba oil, a true feat in the matte world as some matte lipsticks feel slightly chalky and dry. The three colours are all versions on bold reds, that can be worn alone or blended with a high-shine gloss.
Color Fever Gloss in Pure Gold and Aaron's Red: (£17) are incredible. I love the gold shade as it's so universal and can be worn with virtually any lipstick. The red shade is transparent and gives lips a fullness and liveliness without overpowering them.
Crayon Khôl in Pure Gold and Indigo Paris: (£14.50 each) are two new gold and deep blue eyeliner pencils. The smooth and long-wearabiity makes these a must-have.
Virtuôse Mascara: (£19.50 each) has gotten a little bit of a revamp. This new shade is a gold-sequined indigo topcoat that also curls and lengthens like the original.
Palette Liberté in Indigo Royautè: (£35) is the blue and gold four shadow palette I told you about above also comes packaged in a beautiful white gold case adorned with the signature Lancôme roses printed into the metal.
Palette Liberté in Liberté: (£35) is another powder shadow quad containing a gold shade a black colour with gold sparkles, a medium brown colour and a bone colour. This palette is perfect for any gal any time of the year.
La Rose Liberté: (£32) is a gold powder palette embossed with a gold rose on the top layer. It can be worn as highlighter on our eyes, cheeks or body to a special joueur de vivre. The new Powder Brush (£25) that goes with it is angled, fluffy and feels like heaven on your skin.

Celebrity Style: Sequinned Blazer

I have spotted a new trend emerging on the London party scene as girls reach for the sequins to jazz up a simple ensemble. Last week both Little Boots and Liz McLaron supported the style which was spotted on the catwalks at D&G and Stella McCartney. It looks best over a simple plain dress or with tailored trousers and a pair of killer heels. Alesha Dixon also sported the look, but with a nautical twist wearing a blue D&G sequined blazer (£900) with an anchor top. Elle Macpherson and Whitney Port have both worn a gold version by Diane von Furstenberg (£776) which is a real statement piece.

Matthew Williamson For H&M Burns Through Foggy San Fran

Breathe in, breathe out. This was me last night when trying to fall asleep. You know when you're so excited for something insomnia ensues and obsession overpowers? You all know I've been anticipating Matthew Williamson's H&M collection since the news broke, but I didn't expect to turn groupie . . .
Rise and shine, join the line at the Powell Street H&M. The line was only about eight stylistas deep at this point. PartySugar, also a MW groupie, joined me around 7:30 a.m. - store opens at 10. But something had been brewing behind Fab's scenes, I just didn't want to jinx anything. And then, the fashion gods looked down upon me, and I got the email - I was granted early press access. Not to shop mind you, but to enter the store (this was about 9ish), survey the scene, try things on, take pics, and revel in MWHM. I already had my wish list, as did Party, so you can imagine our elation.

The West Coast district manager, Alexis, dished on how she thought this was the most commercially viable designer collection. Agreed. She was gaga over the leather jacket and the hot pink gold-studded belt. Interestingly, this SF store gets more stock of the designer goods than LA's Beverly Center store; who said SF didn't love to shop? We also chatted about Phase II - the Summer collection, hitting stores May 14. Alexis promised hot bikinis and a fresh geometric print overnight bag (stay tuned for pics!). I had to ask if Missoni for H&M is up next and she replied "no comment" which leads me to think it's true since the news broke just yesterday and she knew what I was talking about, sneaky Fab.

We were able to hang tight inside the store, out of the fog, but still not shop, until doors opened at 10 a.m. But our plans of attack were in place. And like that - mayhem. This was my first time really tolerating this. I missed the first collection, Karl Lagerfeld, slept through Stella McCartney, slacked on Viktor & Rolf, cried post Roberto Cavalli, and gave up on Commes de Garcons. But not Matthew. This was my H&M collection. And so, I raced though the racks plucking my new babies, calm as a clam.

The dramatic ruffled print maxi dress was the first to go. And in person, this one was amazing; the black sequined detailing was divine. The short version of this was a hot one, too. And as celebrities still work their PR magic, the sequined artsy dress worn by Ginnifer Goodwin and the peacock dress modeled by both Nicky Hilton and Katy Perry were gone in no time. None of these screamed Fab. I added the glam rockin' blue blazer, the yellow embroidered top, the pink feathered cardigan, the butterfly tee, and the hot pink studded belt to my arsenal.

Come Party With Me: Mardi Gras Bash - Invitations

Lately I've been hosting dinner after dinner and I've been dying to have a reason to host a big blowout bash. And I've just found my reason: Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras is typically celebrated the last five days leading up to Lent with the biggest day of partying on Fat Tuesday, the night before Ash Wednesday. As much as I would love to host a huge party on Fat Tuesday, I know that not all of my friends will be able to attend, so it will take place this Saturday night instead. Mardi Gras is not the most sophisticated of celebrations and I'm excited to plan an informal party with dancing, flashing, beads, and all around havoc.

When I think Mardi Gras, the colors green, purple, and gold come to mind so they will be the color of my party.

To make the Mardi Gras mask invitations you will need:

dark green cardstock
purple paper
mask stencil (I made mine by tracing the shape of my eye-mask onto a piece of plain white paper. I added flared wings and cut holes for the eyes)
gold foil or gold candy paper
dark green threaded sequins
glitter (green, purple, or gold)
glue
scissors
pencil
needle
green thread
computer
printer

To assemble this invite:

Using the stencil and a pencil, outline the shape of the mask on the green cardstock.

Cut the shape of the mask out.

Repeat the same process on the purple paper. Outline the eyes and cut out both the mask shape and the eye holes.

Glue two pieces of gold foil onto the front of the green mask shape. The gold is going to be the inside of the eyes.

Cut gold paper down to the size of the mask. Glue the purple mask on top of the green and gold front of the invitation.

With the thread and needle, sew the sequins to the front of the outside rim of the mask. It is not necessary to sew each and every sequin. Thread the needle through a sequin on the front and into the sequin directly next to it pulling tight on the back side of the invitation. Skip several sequins and thread through further down the line. Pull tight on the front side threading through the next sequin and pulling tight on the back side. Skip several sequins before threading through again.

Repeat process until the string of sequins is secured in place on the outside edge of the front of the mask/invitation. (Alternately, carefully glue the sequins to the edge of the front of the invitation.) Set aside.

On your computer type the details of the party in a Mardi Gras-ish font. I used BlairMdITC TT-Medium and wrote the following message:

It’s Time To Let Loose…
And Celebrate Mardi Gras!
Saturday February 17
10 PM
PartySugar’s House
San Francisco
RSVP 415.444.5555

Print the text out on another sheet of dark green cardstock.

With the stencil trace the shape of the mask onto the printed out text sheet.

Cut the shape of the mask out. Do not cut eye wholes.

Glue the text onto the back of the invite being careful to cover up the thread.

With the glitter decorate the front of the invite to your liking. I chose to use a purple glitter pen and outline the the inside of the eyes.

Voila! Your invitation is done and can double as a mask!

Send in the envelope of your choice.

Diane von Furstenberg celebrated International Women's Month by throwing a bash at her West Hollywood boutique last night. Of course, Whitney Port attended to show support for her boss. The reality starlet balanced fancy and casual by wearing a DvF gold-sequined blazer up top, but downplaying it with Charley 5.0 denim leggings and ballet flats. A gold macho watch and her favorite Gucci purse partied the night away with her.

Get the Look: Oscar Party Lounge

Considering that the Oscars are less than a week away, it's about time to start prepping your house for your own Sunday night Oscar party. Since YumSugar shared images with me of her preview tour of the Governors Ball, I figured I'd put 'em to use and show you how to get the look of an Oscar party lounge, making your digs worthy of an award — or at the very least, a nomination.

While I'll never endorse this color scheme, I do appreciate its inspiration. The Palette: As I said, the palette for this party is simply red and gold. But, you can bring in some other tones by using reflective materials like mirror, glass, and pailettes. If red and gold isn't your thing, I don't blame you. Use a similar arrangement in the colors that suit your home best.

The Furniture: The first item on the furniture list is the center piece of a modular seating set or sectional, or an armless loveseat. If you're using the color scheme, you can still get the look with the sofa you already own, but the armless seating is really what gives it that clubby/lounge feel. Try the Brocade Home Horizontal Tufted Loveseat ($1199), the West Elm Tillary Modular Seating ($799), or the EQ3 SALEMA Armless Loveseat ($549). You'll also need a pair of West Elm Mirror Side Tables ($249) for that reflective ritzy glow, and of course, as a place to stash your cocktails.

The Accents: The accents are pretty minimal - just a pair of vases and accent pillows — but they pack a Hollywood glam punch. You'll want to save room for your warm-bodied guests and libations. The accent pillows will be glitzy, with paillettes or sequins of some sort. Try the Nate Berkus Gold Sequin Toss Pillow ($34.99), the West Elm Peacock Pillow Covers ($39), or these Fun and Funky Sequined Pillows ($29.99). Pick up a duo of slim crystal or glass vases, like the Plum Party Honiton Glass Vases ($42 for five) or the CB2 Lisbon Vases ($9.95). Then, fill the vase with a single, top-heavy flower, like a red rose or a fiery-red begonia.

The Lighting: Go with dimmed overhead lighting, or pick up a pale luster from a nearby table lamp.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Vivienne Westwood

It is pleasing to note that Vivienne Westwood's Red Label show now seems to be a permanent fixture of London Fashion Week. After her Berlin clubland-inspired Anglomania collection at Berlin Fashion Week this summer, Westwood's Red Label girl has taken on a more sophisticated approach for Spring/Summer 2009. With a front row that included Kate Moss, Dita von Teese, Daisy Lowe and rather bizarrely, Pamela Anderson, this was one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the week.

Hooded silk jumpsuits and dresses in the palest taupe were given a street-style edge with square sunglasses and punky top knot hair. Westwood's signature tartan got the pared-down treatment with white and blue Prince of Wales check dresses and fitted jackets. A core of tailored separates gave the collection grounding, whilst a combination of masculine severity in the cuts and classic feminine 'frou' shapes looked fresh and modern. Ethnic influences took the Red Label girl to a more exotic place. Cue large, gold tribal earrings and traditional African prints.

There was still that typical Westwood humour of course. A faux-Burberry check visor was paired with a high-waist pencil skirt and 90's hoodies were worn with rolled-up white sweatsuit pants and straightened hair. It is testament to Westwood's talent that these often incongrouous elements sat comfortably together and while the overall look was certainly eclectic it never felt merely random.

The show closed with typical rock and roll aplomb. The late 80's and early 90's club scene was celebrated with molten metallic dresses in shinning steel grey, bronze and bright, yellow gold. An orange-gold sequin dress looked like schmaltzy Christmas wrap, whilst a dark oil-slick dress screamed tough love. Even the more modest muted print dresses got the Amy Winehouse touch with jagged-edge hems and necklines pulled off the shoulder to reveal everyday white bras.

Trend Alert: Boho Gilet

When I saw this image from the latest Warehouse ad campaign I realised how small the fashion trends cycle has gotten. It reminded me of the Sienna Miller boho look from 2002 when we were all wearing low slung long gypsy skirts with big Moroccan belts and layering faux-fur gilets over paisley tops. Minus the maxi-skirt, that's exactly the trend for this Autumn.

Paisley has already emerged on the catwalk at D&G, Matthew Williamson and Paul Smith. The main difference this season is that it has got more of a luxe vibe so add gold jewellery, and sequined scarves.

This means the return of the faux-fur boho gilet which also ties in nicely with the current penchant for mixed textures, for example, here at Warehouse they have added leather trousers to the look. See below for some of the gilets currently available.

Fab Finding Follow Up: A Night at Studio 54

Grammys Red Carpet Trend: Glitterati

I had a feeling that since it was the Grammys we would be treated to some over the top fashions and I was right! The first trend I noticed off the bat was glitterati. Everyone was sparkling! We all know metallics are a huge trend and it is so very red carpet worthy. Petra Nemcova looked like a femme bot in her silver metallic mini dress while Paula Abdul chose a sequin-paneled gown by Valentino. I rather liked Hilary Duff's gold and black Dolce & Gabbana sequined slip dress that most of you hated!
