Just because there wasn't a new episode of Gossip Girl this week that doesn't mean we can't gossip about them. For today's fix, I'm going to challenge you on which cell phone each of the characters have. 2008 has been a crazy year for the Upper East Siders, and their mobile accessories have undergone quite a bit of change as well. Penelope's Blue Cell Phone on Gossip Girl: It's Electric

On Gossip Girl, no character is too small - especially when it only takes but one camera phone pic to bring down entire friendships, romances, and social constructs. This week's episode featured the devious Penelope, formerly one of Blair's minions, but a rabble-rouser in her own right of late.

But her evilness isn't what I focused on - it was that electric blue cell phone she whipped out to peep Gossip Girl's post about Vanessa and Nate making out. It's an LG Chocolate 3 (the same one that Dan has, in black); they call it light blue, I call it electric; either way, it's a pretty snazzy phone if you're not into smartphones yet.

A music player, video capture, and 2.0-megapixel camera (perfect for snapping incriminating candids), all for $80 after rebates. Not that Penelope needs the deal. Sidenote: Do you think she would have the same phone if Verizon weren't sponsoring Gossip Girl?

Gossip Girl's Mystery Phones

Hello, Gossip Girl props! It seems that the scheming characters of the CW's Gossip Girl are a little careless with their cell phones - or does disposable income just allow them to have a cell phone for one episode and then upgrade? It began with Serena Van Der Woodsen, who was spotted in an early episode of the show with an unmistakable iPhone, pictured. However, for the rest of the season (a deal struck with Verizon?), S had a slider phone, and Apple's cell was never seen again.

Now it looks like the same forces are at work - the newly-released season one DVD has an image that, besides having unrecognizable actors, contains Chuck holding a cell phone. The odd thing is, if you're a GG fan and geeksugar tech quiz aficionado, then you know that Chuck used a Moto Q for the entire first season. But on the DVD cover, he has a RAZR2!

What's happening with these cell phones? Do they think we won't notice if they inexplicably change them up? We already discussed the fact that some characters' phones seem miscast, so what do we think of this cell phone mystery? And has anyone rewatched the pilot to see if Chuck has a RAZR2? I won't rest until I know!

eNVious: Vanessa's Cell Phone on Gossip Girl

On the arm of Nate, Vanessa's social status - and screen time - has definitely increased on Gossip Girl. The onetime gal pal of Dan, Vanessa is now holding her own at places like the opera, in gorgeous formal confections. She also carries a pretty stylish cell phone, a silver LG eNV.

The original eNV is a great little phone, but it makes for interesting placement on Gossip Girl. That's because the original eNV, in orange, was Blair's cell phone in season one, and if you've been paying attention, you'd know that she upgraded to a maroon eNV2 for the second season.

The silver eNV that Vanessa carries is not even available on Verizon's website anymore, so I wonder if this is an intentional characterization for Vanessa, who's treated as an inferior by Queen Bee Blair because of her Brooklyn status.

Is it just coincidence, then, that Blair has the same phone - just newer, and slightly better?

Gossip Girl and the Attack of the Candy-Colored Cell Phones!

The addiction to their cell phones is a defining characteristic of the Upper East Side teens on Gossip Girl. Despite their inclination to stick to a certain provider, Blair, Serena, and the gang are still somewhat picky about their cell phones - they want them to match their clothes. Yes, these girls love to rock the rainbow-hued phone - there's plenty of black and silver phones on the show as well, but you won't find those in my slideshow - just color, color, color. Jenny's New Cell Phone on Gossip Girl: HTC-tastic

Since it looks like pretty much every single character on Gossip Girl got a new cell phone for Season Two, I thought some of you might be curious about what your favorite Upper East Siders are carrying since you've been back into this season's tech quizzes! Last week I told you Blair had a new maroon eNV2, and this week my gaze is fixed on the budding couturier, Jenny Humphrey.

Jenny used to have a pink RAZR - which I think fit her really well - but it looks like she's picking up some tech fashion steam with her internship. Not only has Jenny upgraded, but she's gone with the handset maker of the moment: HTC! HTC, you'll recall, is the maker of Google's new Android phone, the G1, and though Jenny couldn't get that (girlfriend's on Verizon), she went with the same color we usually see the G1 in: White. I myself am a huge fan of white cell phones and gadgets, and particularly this phone: The HTC Touch.

Available on Verizon for $200 after discounts, the Touch is a smartphone with a touch screen, music player, QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, and you get access to an application store.

Geek Goods: Blair's New Maroon Cell Phone on Gossip Girl

Loyalists to geeksugar's Gossip Girl tech quiz would know that this season, the casts' season one cell phones have been replaced with flashier, more up-to-date cell phones. Mizz Blair Waldorf here, you'll note, had an oft-matching orange LG eNV last season, but is now sporting the new version of the same phone: the LG eNV2.

What's fun about the choice is that the older and newer version both came in black, and then a couple random color options. Both times, Blair has had the fun color; first orange, and now maroon. It's an interesting fashion choice because though black is always chic, color is bold and daring (not unlike how Blair's prim siren dresses).

Want to follow in my favorite mean girl's tech footsteps? The eNV2 is available from Verizon for $100 and includes a full QWERTY keyboard, a music player, Bluetooth support, and a 2.0-megapixel camera. And yes, it does come in black for those not as bold as Blair.

Serena van der Woodsen's Cell Phone Evolution

Sure, Britney, Paris, Lindsay, and Hilary have all had cell phone evolutions, but they're real people who are upgrading. The only fictional character I can think of who switches out her cell phone so fast is one Serena van der Woodsen of Gossip Girl. She's had at least two cell phones per season so far, changing them like she changes her incredibly short skirts. Check them out! Gossip Girl Loves: LG

Even though Gossip Girl may have an Apple aversion, they don't shy away from featuring LG products (as long as they're carried by sponsor Verizon, of course). Nearly every character has carried a cell phone from the South Korean maker, and they're often fitting on the stylish show, considering the rainbow of colors many of the phones come in - perfect for matching to their outfits! What Cell Phones Should the Characters of Gossip Girl Really Have?

With Gossip Girl officially on hiatus, I'm left alone with my thoughts (a scary place). What's really been bothering me, as a gadget geek, is the phones themselves. I appreciate that the characters are always on their phones, but I actually think different phones would suit certain characters better. This is a case of product placement (Verizon is a sponsor) gone a little awry, so I have brainstormed about what I would like to see the NYC teens carrying, and I want to know your thoughts too.
