Front Page: Tornado, Prince Philip in Hospital, MLK Jr. Remembered, Zimbabwe Raids

A tornado ripped through the Little Rock, AR, area last night. The National Weather Service is reporting an unknown number of injuries. A spokesman for the local sheriff's department says, "there's some structural damage in the city of Little Rock and several areas north of North Little Rock. A lot of trees and power lines are down." The storm decimated a mobile home park leaving 50 trailers on fire. This Winter's weather hasn't been kind to Arkansas. In the last two months, Arkansas has seen a tornado during a storm outbreak that killed 13, a foot of snow, more than a foot of rain, and near-record flooding.

Britain's Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elizabeth, has been hospitalized. The 86-year-old is being treated for a chest infection. Reports say he's stable, and a spokeswoman says "His Royal Highness's program of engagements for the weekend have been canceled."
This day marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. King was shot and killed on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN, while helping organize a strike by sanitation workers, then some of the poorest of the city's working poor. Dr. King will be remembered today nationwide and with a march through Memphis and the laying of wreaths at the site of King's assassination.
Zimbabwe's government staged separate police raids on the main opposition party and foreign journalists. Four journalists, including one from the New York Times, have been taken into custody for violating the country's media laws. Zimbabwe only has one, government-controlled newspaper.

Front Page: More Troops for Afghanistan, Pelosi Calls for Boycott, UK Troop Reductions Stalled

President Bush asked NATO allies to send more troops to Afghanistan in a speech delivered before a big NATO summit. Bush quoted Sarkozy saying, "As [French] President Sarkozy put it in London last week, we cannot afford to lose Afghanistan. Whatever the cost, however difficult, we cannot afford it, we must win. If we do not defeat the terrorists in Afghanistan, we will face them on our soil." NATO-led forces currently number 47,000 troops. France has already answered the call for more - Prime Minister Francois Fillon said that his country would send several hundred more troops.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is calling for President Bush to boycott the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Pelosi has just returned from a visit with the Dalai Lama. She said, “the president of the United States, if he is going to give credibility to the Chinese government, he should also take the time to say to them we are very concerned, not only about human rights, which are a very important value to us, but we are also concerned about our trade situation.” Pelosi says a high profile boycott of the opening will send a message without affecting the games. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has already announced she will be skipping the ceremony.
British Prime Minister Gordon Browne announced the draw-down of British troops from Iraq will be postponed given the recent violence in Basra. The plan was to reduce the number of troops from 4,000 to 2,500 this spring. Browne said, "In the light of the last week's events, however, it is prudent that we pause any further reductions while the current situation is unfolding. It is absolutely right that military commanders review plans when conditions on the ground change."

What's Your View on Beauty Pageants?

On Monday evening at Cafe de Paris in London, The Miss Great Britain Pageant was held, and the reigning queen was 23 year old Sophie Gradon, from Newcastle. Sophie has also won the Miss Newcastle title and is now eligible to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant. What do you think of this years winner, and moreover, how do you feel about beauty pageants? Do you think they're outdated and ridiculous or fun and just another form of healthy competition?

Eurovision 2009 - Did Jade's Performance Make You Proud?

Another Eurovision has been and gone, and it's fair to say that last night there were some awe inspiring performances from around Europe, including Greece's entry (perhaps my personal favourite apart from ours), and Dita Von Teese's appearance with the German entry.

Here's Jade Ewen's performance for Great Britain, she was accompanied on the piano in Russia by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. There may have been an unprovoked attack on Jade by a violinist(!), but they managed to earn fifth place in the competition, which is fantastic - especially when you remember last year we came last. Though Norway were the winners of the final, I'd like to know - did Jade make you proud?

2008 Style Olympics: Great Britain vs USA

The 2008 Beijing Olympics kicked off on Friday with an amazing opening ceremony. Most of the athletes taking part in the games paraded around the birds nest stadium showing off their smart uniforms. Team USA had their uniform designed by Ralph Lauren and it even included newsboy hats. Great Britain wore a white blazer over a navy blue ensemble (skirts for girls, trousers for guys - very traditional). Fab US already asked if you loved the USA ensemble but now I wanna know which do you prefer, Great Britain or USA?

David Wants to Lead Great Britain in 2012, After Milan in 2010

David Beckham looked happy as he trained with Shaun Wright Phillips and the rest of England team at London Colney in St Albans on Friday, but he didn't get to play a part in the side's 2-1 defeat of Slovenia in a friendly match at Wembley on Saturday. He'll be hoping to come on to the pitch for Wednesday's World Cup Qualifier against Croatia, and he's also expressed he desire to lead the Great Britain squad at the 2012 Olympics in London, saying:

"I was very proud to play a part in bringing the Olympics to London. It was such a great thrill when we were awarded them so to go on to be a part of 2012 itself will be just terrific. I would certainly love to be involved with the GB football team. Obviously, I would be very much an 'older' player by then but I definitely want to be involved there in some capacity."

With reports suggesting David has already finalised his return to Milan in January 2010, it looks like he'll be spending a lot more time in Europe in the coming years.

Study Reveals That Men Who Tidy Make the Ladies Happy

In another case of researching the obvious, an Oxford University study shows that women are more attracted to men if they believe they will help out with household chores and contribute equally with childcare. As a lucky woman whose husband does half the housework (and as a woman who has been in the opposite situation with boyfriends and housemates in the past), all I can say is: duh!

The study, which was reported in the Telegraph, examined heterosexual relationships in 13 countries, questioning 13,500 men and women between the ages of 20 and 45 from each country about gender, housework, and childcare responsibilities. Those sexy Swedes and Norwegians came out on top, with British men following in third place. The article notes:

Australian men – stereotyped for their love of beer, sport, and the great outdoors – came in last, rated as the least attractive in terms of pulling their weight around the house.
