On June 26, 1981 one of the world's craziest coupon-clipping excursion occurred. Virginia Campbell of Mountain Home, Idaho is reported to have purchased $24,460 worth of groceries for only 67 cents! I don't know what's more impressive, the fact that she got it for practically free, or the fact that she needed $24,460 worth of groceries!

Every time I visit Trader Joe's, I leave with a few things that I can't wait to try for the first time. Discovering new delicious items is good insurance against the temptation of eating out. I dine out much less than I used to but the food in my belly is certifiably tasty, so I'm a happy camper who's saving more on food.

On average, I shop at Mollie Stone's on California Street in San Francisco twice a week. I've been picking up groceries there since I moved into my current apartment two years ago. This time of year it feels like I'm constantly at the grocery store. Between baking and cooking dishes to bring to parties or hosting my own guests, it seems there's always something that I need to pick up. These expenses add up, but luckily there seem to be a lot of grocery deals lately.

When you realize you're snacking your way through every meal, it's time to go to the grocery store. Now that I have some ingredients around, there will be actual meals in the near future, namely black bean chili (it's chilly again in San Francisco) and caprese crepes. Can you guess how much some of the items I bought at Safeway cost?

Even though I've made countless trips to the grocery store, sometimes I'm still surprised when certain things cost more than others. Some things sold for a premium totally baffle me, while less expensive items seem like they should cost more for how versatile they are. Let's get back to basics with supermarket items.
