Trend Setters: Preppy Pets Rock . . . Bows and Barrettes

For those times when a simple rubber band or ribbon just won't do, try a fancy bow or barrette to keep your lil pup's topknot looking top notch. Obvs my fella doesn't have enough fur for such fun accessories . . . and isn't really into that whole girly girl pooch thing anyway. But, for longhaired doggies, keeping that hair out of their eyes can prevent unfortunate run-ins with the wall! With the recent trend for oversize hair bows and ribbon-strewn hair bands, this look is moving into the mainstream. From Jaime Winstone's Minnie Mouse bow to the 80's vogue for tongue-in-cheek hair accessories, it could be time to jump on the bandwagon. Personally, I'm torn between loving this look and it reminding me too much of Christmas 1987 when I was forced to don an unsightly pink satin bow all through dinner, much to the annoyance of my six year old self!

YSL Goes Bow Beautilicious

This season oversize bows have replaced floral blooms as the hair acccessory of choice for the cool set. From the catwalks at Sportmax where the models wore floppy, satin creations to structured preppy bows at Marc by Marc Jacobs or satin ribbons at Luella; the coolest locks are sporting this trend for autumn. Now YSL have got in on the act with their new Christmas beauty collection.

The French brand's holiday offering features a plethora of bow embellishments. I especially love the chic lip duo and the elegant makeup palette (£43), which is certainly getting pride of place on my wish list! The lip duo (£39) is inspired by the famous Bow bag created for YSL by Stefano Pilati.

An on-trend raspberry-red lipstick and a sparkling pink gloss come complete in a small gold-coloured charm in the shape of a bow. There's a tiny mirror and mini applicator brush too so it's ideal for adding a touch of glamour to your makeup bag. Alternatively splash out on a beloved friend or family member - it'd make a very luxurious stocking filler for someone special.

Beyonce sports a number of revealing outfits in the colourful video, while GaGa's appearance is pretty understated compared to her usual outlandish attire! She said she told Beyonce, "...I don't want to show up in some frickin' hair bow and be fashion Gaga in your video... I want to do you." Hmm, let's see. Where else have we seen '80s-influenced styles on the runways thus far? We caught a glimpse of the totally awesome decade with Derek Lam's rainbow of eye colors, Gwen Stefani's rocker chic looks at L.A.M.B., and we even experienced a touch of it from the twisted headbands at Charlotte Ronson. Let's add Marc by Marc Jacobs to the growing list of rad styles, where the famous designer featured these big, bold, and completely bodacious bows on the Marc by Marc Jacobs runway for Spring 2010. If you were a child of the 1980s, I'm sure you can't help but think Madonna-meets-Minnie Mouse, right?
