Mom–Me Time: Color Mark

It's Saturday night and you are headed to a glitzy affair. Your hubby is dapper, your frock is smashing, and the kids are sawing logs. One last check in the mirror and you realize, your gray hairs have sprouted out all over the place. What's a girl to do?

For graying moms who are on the go and can't make it to a three–hour hair appointment to touch up those roots, Color Mark temporary hair color may be the answer.

To learn more about this lil lifesaver, read more.

The mascara–type tube of color is a cinch to use. The enclosed mini comb holds the gray hairs away from the scalp while the foam color–tipped applicator slides the dye onto the troubled areas. Dry in no time, you can brush it through or even hair spray your coif. When you've had enough of it, you just shampoo and rinse.

The convenient wand is easy and the tube of magic does not contain ammonia or peroxide making it safe for mamas–to–be. Available in 12 shades, there's a color for every head.

Hair Dye and Health Safety

Coloring your hair is really common, whether it be to add mahogany highlights or hide strands of gray. In fact, nearly 70 percent of American women religiously visit the salon to alter their look, but, as I'm sure many of you have asked, is the beauty practice safe? Quite a few studies have found no connection between coloring your hair and cancer, and multiple studies have looked specifically at breast, bladder, and brain cancer finding no connection to these specific types either. Hair dye can, however, cause skin reactions like rashes, swelling, burning, and blisters, since many formulations contain chemicals such as p-Phenylenediamine (PPD). The good news is that hair dyes nowadays contain much less ammonia than they did 30 to 40 years ago.

Nervous about putting toxic chemicals on your hair and scalp? Then continue reading

When You Dye Your Hair, Do You Still Think of Yourself With Your Old Hair Color?

This is a phenomenon I've discussed with a couple of friends, but I want to get your opinion on it. Whenever I dye my hair a drastically different color - going really red, say - I still see myself with my original color in my mind's eye. And when I try to think about myself objectively, to decide whether a color or a certain hairstyle would look good on me, I have a really difficult time picturing myself as I now look, instead of continuing to see myself as I looked before. Does something similar happen to you, or do you make the adjustment smoothly? And have you ever encountered this problem in other areas?

Four Ways to Keep Hair Color on Your Hair, Not Your Face

Do you color your hair at home? Have you been pleased with the results, but not so thrilled with those unintentional spills on your forehead, neck, or ears that seem to stick around for days? Well, here are some easy tips to prevent those "uh no" moments. Check out my suggestions below, and fill me in on any DIY treatments of your own:

Condition: Colored hair needs intense conditioning to lock in the dye and give the hair shine. But, did you know you can use that conditioner around your hairline to keep the color off your skin? Apply a thick conditioner (not thin, which can run or drip) to the skin on your forehead, around the ears, and all the way down to the nape to create a barrier. Try an inexpensive product like Dove Intense Damage Therapy Conditioner ($4.99).

Glove up: It probably goes without saying, but always wear gloves when coloring your hair to prevent staining of the nails and hands. If your at-home kit doesn't come equipped with them, buy a reusable pair for protection such as Color Trak Tools Reusable Gloves ($.99).

Rub a dub dub: Right before shampooing your color out, if you notice a splotch or two on your skin, try rubbing a little hair color from your head right into the splotch. This technique can actually help lift the stain, and it's one the professionals even use.

Wipe it: If you've got a stubborn stain, try a wet wipe specifically formulated to remove hair color. Available at your local beauty supply store, Dy-Zoff Hair Color Stain Remover Pads ($4.99) get the dye out, albeit with an odd aroma. I can deal.

Source

New Hair Color Aims For a Perfect 10

Clairol has just launched Perfect 10, a new line of at-home hair coloring. "Big deal," you might be thinking. "It's all the same stuff, more or less." Oh, but it's not!

Unlike its predecessors, Perfect 10 dyes hair quickly-so quickly, in fact, that the color is done in just 10 minutes. And while you might imagine this process would be harsh on hair, it's actually much less damaging than other dyes. Its pH is lower, so it strips less of the hair's lipid coating; additionally, the gentler formula makes hair less likely to break. (Check out some explanatory photos here.)

Priced at $13.99, it's available in 14 shades. In addition, it has a cool application brush that looks like it could be fun to use. Check out the gallery of available colors here, and let me know if any of you try it. If it's actually able to deliver faster, rich color without damaging hair, this might be something huge.

Have You Ever Colored Your Hair With Something Other Than Hair Dye?

My friend and I used to break out the lemon juice in high school to provide a little lightening effect to our hair. Thinking back on it, I'm lucky I even had hair. Sunning with a perm, while squeezing on lemon juice? Could have been a tragic combo.

This got me to thinking about the "other" ways in which one can color his or her hair. Aside from traditional dyes, here are some alternative options that come to mind: veggies and spices (beets, carrots, rhubarb, paprika), caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea) and/or extreme methods (Kool-Aid, Jell-O, food coloring).

So tell me if you've altered your hair color a non-typical way, whether it's by using a more natural approach or through means of some wacky concoction instead?

Source

5 Tips For Getting Kristen Stewart's New Moon Shine

It was dazzling in its shininess without looking gelled or greasy. Glossy hair like that doesn't just happen on its own, so I though I'd hunt up some tips to help all of us get similarly healthy, reflective tresses. I put together five of the best, so to find out how to get Kristen's shine, just read more.

Ask Bella: How Do I Lift Black Hair Dye?

Recently, a distressed reader contacted me about an unfortunate incident regarding a box of black hair color and the subsequent regretful results. Here's her story:

Three months ago I had an adult identity crisis and dumped a box of jet black dye on my naturally medium brown hair. Now I can't get it to lift out for anything - professionally or at home. Can you make a suggestion? I'm a 25-year-old woman and I look like a scene kid. It's rough.

There's no excuse for looking like a Brokencyde groupie. Lifting pigment can be a tricky endeavor, though, so you have to be careful. For my advice on helping this reader to lighten up, just read more.

What Do You Think About Men Who Dye Their Hair?

I was shocked (shocked, I tell you!) to see this picture of actor Stephen Moyer, better known as Vampire Bill from True Blood, at a Nylon magazine party. There he is, just standing around, being blond. I don't know if this is his natural shade, but it does indicate that there's some coloring going down on set. Stephen is a fine-lookin' man either way, but what do you think about all this man-coloring? And what about guys who dye their hair just because they want to, instead of for work? Should it be just as fun and acceptable as it is for women, or less so? (By the way, we have declared Fridays to be Talk Like Vampire Bill Days. Follow us on Twitter to play along.)
