When You Dye Your Hair, Do You Still Think of Yourself With Your Old Hair Color?

This is a phenomenon I've discussed with a couple of friends, but I want to get your opinion on it. Whenever I dye my hair a drastically different color - going really red, say - I still see myself with my original color in my mind's eye. And when I try to think about myself objectively, to decide whether a color or a certain hairstyle would look good on me, I have a really difficult time picturing myself as I now look, instead of continuing to see myself as I looked before. Does something similar happen to you, or do you make the adjustment smoothly? And have you ever encountered this problem in other areas?

Four Ways to Keep Hair Color on Your Hair, Not Your Face

Do you color your hair at home? Have you been pleased with the results, but not so thrilled with those unintentional spills on your forehead, neck, or ears that seem to stick around for days? Well, here are some easy tips to prevent those "uh no" moments. Check out my suggestions below, and fill me in on any DIY treatments of your own:

Condition: Colored hair needs intense conditioning to lock in the dye and give the hair shine. But, did you know you can use that conditioner around your hairline to keep the color off your skin? Apply a thick conditioner (not thin, which can run or drip) to the skin on your forehead, around the ears, and all the way down to the nape to create a barrier. Try an inexpensive product like Dove Intense Damage Therapy Conditioner ($4.99).
Glove up: It probably goes without saying, but always wear gloves when coloring your hair to prevent staining of the nails and hands. If your at-home kit doesn't come equipped with them, buy a reusable pair for protection such as Color Trak Tools Reusable Gloves ($.99).
Rub a dub dub: Right before shampooing your color out, if you notice a splotch or two on your skin, try rubbing a little hair color from your head right into the splotch. This technique can actually help lift the stain, and it's one the professionals even use.
Wipe it: If you've got a stubborn stain, try a wet wipe specifically formulated to remove hair color. Available at your local beauty supply store, Dy-Zoff Hair Color Stain Remover Pads ($4.99) get the dye out, albeit with an odd aroma. I can deal.

New Hair Color Aims For a Perfect 10

Have You Ever Colored Your Hair With Something Other Than Hair Dye?

My friend and I used to break out the lemon juice in high school to provide a little lightening effect to our hair. Thinking back on it, I'm lucky I even had hair. Sunning with a perm, while squeezing on lemon juice? Could have been a tragic combo.

This got me to thinking about the "other" ways in which one can color his or her hair. Aside from traditional dyes, here are some alternative options that come to mind: veggies and spices (beets, carrots, rhubarb, paprika), caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea) and/or extreme methods (Kool-Aid, Jell-O, food coloring).

So tell me if you've altered your hair color a non-typical way, whether it's by using a more natural approach or through means of some wacky concoction instead?

I was shocked (shocked, I tell you!) to see this picture of actor Stephen Moyer, better known as Vampire Bill from True Blood, at a Nylon magazine party. There he is, just standing around, being blond. I don't know if this is his natural shade, but it does indicate that there's some coloring going down on set. Stephen is a fine-lookin' man either way, but what do you think about all this man-coloring? And what about guys who dye their hair just because they want to, instead of for work?
