Hair Color Dos and Don'ts: Must-Have Tips For Perfect Results

When it comes to at-home hair color, all products are NOT created equal. Knowing what to look for can make the difference between so-so and stunning. Here are some secrets, including special tips from celebrity hair colorist and L’Oréal Paris expert Christophe Robin, for achieving beautiful, professional-looking results on your own.

DO choose a shade that complements your skin tone and eyes. “If you have fair skin and blue, green or gray eyes, your complementary shades will have ash or beige tones,” Christophe advises. “If your skin tone is golden, olive or dark and you have dark eyes, your complementary shades will have gold or red hues.” Have characteristics of both warm and cool tones? “Go with whichever is your preference.”

DO stick close to your own hair color if you want a subtle change. “If you’re not sure which shade to choose, go just 1 or 2 levels lighter or darker than your natural color,” says Christophe. “This will give you a noticeable change that’s not too dramatic and is easy to maintain.”

DO pick a product that’s specifically formulated to cover gray hair, which can resist coloring.

DO use products specifically designed to preserve your color, like Vive Pro Color Vive Shampoo and Conditioner for Color-Treated Hair.

DO choose a gentle formulation and indulge in regular deep-conditioning treatments.

DON’T be afraid to take a risk. Hair color offers a fun way to express your personality and experiment with a new style or attitude. “When a woman goes darker with her color, she’ll feel stronger,” Christophe notes. “When she goes lighter, she’ll feel more sexy and sensual.”

DON’T skimp on time. You might be tempted to cut corners to save a few minutes, but resist the urge. It’s crucial to allow the proper amount of time for each step - especially when you are going for a dramatic color change “You can’t rush hair color,” Christophe cautions.

DON’T judge a box by its cover. Although it’s a common misconception, you shouldn’t expect your hair color to turn out exactly like the model’s on the box. “Your personal result will be determined by the condition of your hair, your current hair color and the shade you’ve selected,” says Christophe.

DON’T overdo it. Coloring too often can compromise hair’s health and yield uneven results. A touch-up every four to six weeks is all that’s required to keep your shade looking fresh and vibrant.

DON’T forget the SPF. You protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun, so why let your hair take the heat? “The sun is the number one enemy of color-treated hair,” says Christophe. Use shampoos and conditioners that contain UV filters to block damaging rays and prevent fade-out.

It's a new season, so why not consider changing your hair color? Whether you head to a salon or pick out a box color to use at home, a new hue might be just the thing to lighten your mood. Robert James, a San Francisco-based colorist who's worked with stars such as Alyssa Milano, Carmen Electra, and Gwen Stefani, offers these tips for having beautiful and healthy hair for spring.

Don't overdo it.
Instead of all-over highlights, add a few well-positioned lighter pieces. "People are going for a more beachy look," James says. "Think of Sarah Jessica Parker. She's doing mostly brown with a few lighter pieces around her face and her ends."

Do put down the bottle.
"Don't shampoo every day," James advises. "But do condition as often as possible, because the sun depletes moisture."

Do keep your costs under control.
Partial highlights can still brighten your face while keeping your budget in check. "Only highlight around your hairline, or highlight only down the parting as opposed to having a full set," says James.

Don't think that dye is the only option.
"Glazes are good for in between services," James explains. "Shine treatments condition hair, and they're far less expensive."

Committing to color is no easy decision for you . . . or your pocketbook. These two-toned dos do look fun, but may not be something you want to rock for an everyday look (especially if it involves stripping jet black hair for a lighter hue). Now that Spring has sprung, it's time to start thinking about Summer! If you have plans to hit the beach, a comfy and flattering bathing suit is a must, but I'm with you if you're dreading that shopping trip. Before getting too discouraged, I have some easy tips for making bathing suit shopping as painless as possible. To see my dos and don'ts, just read more.

Don't

Shop with your body shape in mind.
Bring a close friend with you if you need a second opinion.
Get a spray tan before shopping - nothing is worse than trying on suits when you're feeling pasty white.
Make sure the suit fits properly. If your top is too big, it won't do your girls justice, and if your bottoms are too small, it'll cut into your side - not a good look.
Look in a three-way mirror so you can check out your backside.
Choose a color or print that flatters your skin tone, hair, and eye color.
Shop online (if the suits are returnable) so you can try them on in the comfort of your own home.

Go bathing suit shopping on a full stomach.
Berate yourself or fixate on what's "wrong" with your body - pay attention to the entire package.
Forget that fluorescent lights never do you justice.
Pay attention to the size of the suit. Most bathing suits run particularly small.

Katie Holmes wowed the audience arriving at Tom Cruise's Japan premiere of Valkyrie today with gorgeous long hair! Katie has been wearing her chic short haircut for a little under two years, and it's such a surprise to see her with long locks again. Recently, it appeared that Katie was starting to grow it out again after her shortest look last Fall, but here she looks just fantastic -vibrant and young, smiling like the Katie we fell in love with. While we may miss her mother-daughter matching dos with Suri, the 2-year-old is a bit young for extensions. The Cruises arrived in Japan over the weekend, and we know at least one way Katie has been spending her time. So what do you think - are you loving the return of her long hair?

Manchester in Fashion Weekend: Hair Trends

While my partner in crime was busy with fashion, at Manchester Fashion Weekend, I managed to sneak backstage to get the lowdown on some of the fantastic hair looks. Joshua Robinson from Headmasters was the hair maestro behind the modern messy styles and he shared his inspiration for the shows.

How do the hair styles work with the 5 quite different looks?
To be honest, we thought we were going to have to change the looks a couple of times but we found that hair up has worked with every single one of them.
What's your overall theme?
The theme this season is shabby chic. Basically it’s very Gucci, very Prada. Makeup wise it’s been all about smoky eyes and nude lips and we’ve basically tried to make the hair compliment that.
There's a lot of up dos, how have you made these modern?
We've been incorporating fish tails into the up dos to keep the look textured, which is the new way of plaiting. It looks as if the models have gone clubbing the night before and woken up with messy hair. Basically what we’re doing today is letting people watch the show and then they’re coming down stairs and we’re showing them how to recreate the looks they’ve just seen.
Any tips for re-creating this look at home?
Start off with volumiser from technique from L’Oreal. For the catwalk we sprayed about four times more than you'd usually use to make it really messy. Just start on dry hair and keep overloading it with product. Dry it in and overload it again so you start to get a very dirty texture.
Does this work best on day-old, slightly dirty hair?
Yes but you can create that look with products. Once the hair is full of product, just comb through slightly, obviously not taking too much of the kink and messiness out. Try and scrunch the hair at the same time as combing to keep the volume in. The hair should look quite tatty and disheveled.

Beauty Glossary: 20's Slicked-back Hair

While girls wore their hair in cute bobs or wavy flapper girl style, mens hair in the 1920's was super simple. Hair was slicked back with gel for a formal look that was thought to be both masculine and also elegant. Think of The Great Gatsby or the new Brideshead Revisited film and you get the picture.

Using an early form of gel, called brilliantine, hair was generally slicked straight back and kept short on the sides. The top layers were left longer, but they were combed back and greased with tonic to provide a sophisticated look. Alternatively, the hair had a slightly off-side parting and was slicked back and to the side for a distinguished appearance that is probably what springs to mind when most people think of the roaring 20's.

This masculine look inspired the most fashionable women's styles of the times too. Compared to the poufy big hair dos of the 1900's the 20's was all about slick bobs and boyish hair. If the catwalks are anything to go by, then this masculine 20's style hair is going to be big news for next spring for both the girls and the boys. Think of the slicked back hair at the Jean Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld shows this week in Paris, while London Fashion Week gave us the quintessential 20s hair look at Temperley. Seems like we're looking back to the future for next season.

2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards: Taraji P. Henson

With hair just barely past her chin, twice-nominated Taraji P. Henson is somewhat limited in the amount of up-dos she can pull off. She opts to wear her bobbed cut slightly curled under with long bangs falling over one eye - a straightforward and sleek style for the red carpet.

On her eyes, there's gold shadow on the bottom and inner top corner and what looks like a soft purple up top – it's hidden by those killer fake lashes that seem to nearly reach her defined brow. The look's finished off with a glossy lip color. Is this look too simply styled or does it shine for you?
