When I was a teenager, I was a loner, Dottie. A rebel. And like any self-styled outsider, I dyed my hair.

Over the weekend at the Reading and Leeds Festival Pixie Geldof arrived with newly blonde-again hair in long extensions. This look is quite a dramatic change from her typical super-short crop. I don't know about you, but I'm starting to get whiplash from trying to keep up with Pixie and Peaches' ever changing haircuts and hair colours.

My pal BellaSugar US has done a series on hair extension quizzes that everybody has loved, so I've decided to bring this feature to the UK! Try and see if you can tell whose hair is real from those who's gotten a little extra help with volume and/or length — good luck!

Kate Freund is a comedic artist/writer/all-around talented lady who I found through her super-cute Magnetic Fields video. Most of her videos involve acting or music, but this one is a more straightforward tutorial on creating clip-in hair extensions. Kate dyes hers pink, but obviously you can go with any color you like.

Being a cat lady is about to take on a whole different meaning. A new hair-extension technique aims to be chic and eco-friendly at the same time. By using cat hair instead of human hair in its extensions, San Francisco-based Lechaton Cosmeceuticals promises to create long-lasting extensions with fuller, natural color.

We see them on the heads of celebrities. We may even have them ourselves. But, when it comes down to it, do we really know where that hair comes from?

Hair extensions can either be clipped in, bonded, braided, sewn or weaved into your hair. Fake ponytails are typically attached by a giant claw, but falls are solid hair pieces that get attached just under the crown of your head to add length, thickness and volume. Last night at the Bride Wars premiere in New York, actress Anne Hathaway arrived with a rich brown fall that added a certain 1960's polished mod-style glamour to the red carpet.

Lily Allen has been playing yo-yo with her hair extensions lately. Within a matter of weeks, she's gone from wearing it in a choppy bob to short and curly, to long and sleek and back to short again. Just yesterday, she was spotted out on the town at Bungalow 8 in London with (maybe beau) Nick Grimshaw with even heavier fringe and long, wavy extensions — talk about a style chameleon!
