What Is Hair Glaze?

Shiny hair is kind of an enigma. Everyone wants it, yet no one really thinks they have it. At-home glazes sometimes have color specifications, but most companies make a clear version as well. Confused about what glazes are and how they should be used, I turned to Paul Cucinello, who is the Creative Director of Chris Chase Salon in New York City.

How do at-home hair glazes work?
Paul Cucinello: If you do a glaze at home, it has more peroxide than the kind we do at the salon. Anything you buy at home has to be stronger. They make it so no matter which color you choose you'll see a result, whatever your hair type. Even a clear gloss can lift your natural color a little bit. If you are blond, it might be ok if you want to lighten it, but it would be more of a brightener. At the salon, we can do something more gentle.

What can too much peroxide do to your hair?
Paul Cucinello: Too much peroxide can dry out your hair. After the glossy part wears off, it will be drier [than before]. The salon kind will leave your hair in the same position as before you did it. We use Goldwell, which is an acid color, so it closes the cuticle and makes the hair really shiny.

What type of glaze would you recommend?
Paul Cucinello: Outside of the salon, stick with a clear gloss or ask your colorist what they suggest, if you’re going to be doing it at home anyway. We have clients that buy them to use in between uses at the salon. The thing people don’t think of about color is it's chemicals and they can have a chemical reaction on the hair. What you see on the box is not what you get.

Are there alternatives to at-home glaze?
Paul Cucinello: Of course! Everyone wants super shiny hair. Shine is a very cosmetic thing. If you just upgrade your products - the Kerastase Chroma Riche line is amazing - your hair will definitely be shinier.

Raven hair can be beautiful, sexy, and even goth. When you think about it, how often do you really see true deep, dark, (sometimes almost blue-toned) black hair? This week I've been giving you tips on how to enhance your hair color. I've already covered brunettes and redheads. And now, let's focus on you raven-haired beauties.

Regardless of whatever artificial color you are adding to your hair, there are three mantras: use a color-protecting shampoo, wash in cool water to trap in the color molecules, and avoid direct sunlight, which can fade pigments. Read more tips on enhancing this striking shade when you read more.

Powder your hair: We all know that powder works as a dry shampoo for those, "I didn't have time to wash" moments. Since you're probably not washing your hair daily in order to prevent fading, try Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder in Black ($19 to $35), a dry "shampoo" that absorbs oils and gives a dark tint to deeper-toned hair.
Mousse magic: Who wouldn't want a little extra hair boost, in the form of fullness and color enhancement? Roux Fanci-Full Color Styling Mousse in Black Rage ($9) provides volume, enhances hair with a rich hue, and shampoos out. Temporary rocks.

Get a glaze: In between colorings, try a glaze to keep the shine locked in. Try Revlon Colorist Expert Color and Glaze System in Black 20 ($16).
Be a nut: For a more natural approach, try this simple recipe to impart deep, deep brown tones, assuming you are not allergic to nuts. Handle this DIY dye carefully, as it will stain more than just your hair. Boil about a pound of walnut husks with about two cups of water for fifteen minutes. Strain, and let sit on hair for about 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo.

Hair Color How-Tos: Keeping Reds Vibrant

Ah, red. It's such a feisty color. It can be a sassy, fiery shade of cherry, or a subtle, natural strawberry blonde. Whatever the case, one thing's for sure. While the smaller color molecules of red dye enter the hair rather easily, they also exit the hair quite rapidly.

The most surefire way to keep red staying vibrant is to wash your hair less often. But, there are more things you can do to keep your reds refreshing. Go pro: When it comes to red, there are so many variations and tones of color. Plus, box color isn't as strong as professional color, so it's best to leave it to the experts. That, or use professional color only like you'd find at Sally Beauty Supply.
Sun protection: Besides water, one of hair color's worst enemies is the sun. Protect from fading by covering your hair with a scarf, hat, or even sun protecting product like Aveda Color Conserve Sun Protector ($14).
Wait and wash: After coloring your hair, wait 24-48 hours to help lock it in further. Trust me. It works.
Cold water: Warm water opens up the cuticle. Cold water helps seal it. Help prevent red color from slipping out by washing it in cold water instead.
Safety first: It probably goes without saying that color-safe shampoo is a must for color-treated hair. For red hair, however, it's an absolute must. Try Redken Color Extend Shampoo ($13) and Redken Color Extend Conditioner ($15).
Glazed over: A glaze will keep your red looking shiny and fresh in between colorings. John Frieda's Luminous Color Glaze in Deeper, Richer Red ($8.50) might just do the trick.
Depositing shampoo: Once or twice a week, try a color depositing shampoo and conditioner to keep the vibrancy alive, like L'Oreal's ARTec Professionnel Color Depositing Shampoos ($17 each) and Conditioners ($19 each) in Cherry Bark, Orange Marigold, and Red Clover.
DIY: Use ingredients from nature to enhance your hair color. Apply a 50/50 mixture of carrot and beet juice on damp hair. Let it sit for an hour out in the sun.
Get real: Be realistic about red. If you are going from a light blond to an auburn, it may take a few trips to the salon to get the true, rich red pigment you desire.
