Bella Interview: Jerome Hillion, Hair Master

Longtime readers may know Jerome Hillion, the London stylist known for his artistic, creative, and unusual hairstyles. After being named Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year in 2005, he's continued to create out-of-the-ordinary looks that beg to be looked at. I've been wondering about his inspiration, and fortunately for us, he was happy to answer a few questions from his London salon:

How and when did you know you wanted to create avant-garde hairstyles?
Since the age of 5, I was creating hairstyles on dolls and used to imagine catwalks and choreographies. That was the way I used to play.

Some of your styles seem like they involve a lot of product, heat, and potentially stressful treatments. How do you recommend keeping hair healthy?
My hairstyles don't involve many products. I use techniques to dry the hair in the texture or shape, using serums, then flexible heat protection hairspray. To keep hair healthy, simply apply a mask at least once a week, and use shampoo and conditioner specific to your hair type. Serums or styling creams can also provide heat protection. Don't over-process your hair with chemicals.

For the complete interview, plus a gallery of some of his work, just read more

Where do you get the inspiration for your hairstyles?
A lot of my hairstyles are inspired by people around me. They can be artists, the homeless man in the street. Basically, people who make me get out of my comfort zone inspire me for everything I do.

How can people be more adventurous with their hair at home?
I would recommend to find a stylist who is excited to do your hair. Get to know each other; that way you establish trust both sides. A great stylist should always show you little tricks to personalize your style. That is the way I work with every single client I meet. Advice should be given individually; I don't believe in "everyone should wear the same generic style." Be yourself, express yourself through your look. Look in the mirror and make the most of what or who you are!

What do you say to people who think such out-there styles are unwearable?
Who said that hairstyles had to be wearable? It is like confusing haute couture with pret-a-porter . . . be sensible and open to art. People who changed or made things happen are people who didn't think inside the box. These hairstyles are to be looked at and not to be worn.

Bella Interview: Cristophe, Hair Stylist

The only thing I love more than a famous hairstylist is a famous hairstylist who makes his hair-care products affordable. Such is the case with Cristophe, who creates some of Hollywood's most famous hairstyles in his Beverly Hills salon. While a cut with him costs hundreds of dollars, his unscented, sulfate- and paraben-free hair-care collection (glowing review here) is well priced and available at CVS. I recently talked with him about his philosophy behind his line, so read on.

Why was it important to you to do a line that doesn’t have any dyes or sulfates or fragrances?
My goal was always to make products that are performance oriented. Obviously the primary objective is to have a product that is good for you; we have these reports now that say things like sulfates are maybe not good for you. So this is really an initial move to see how the consumer reacts to this, if they would rather switch to a more natural product or not.

To find out why the man who commands $500 for a haircut decided to make his products affordable, read more.

You can charge hundreds of dollars for haircuts, so why did you decide to do a line that was more affordable?
First of all, I think that fashion is changing tremendously and we are communicating faster, so I think that there is a need for good-quality products. By that I mean if someone is wearing the new eye shadow from Chanel tonight, the rest of the country will hear about it by tomorrow. And most likely, most people have the buying power to do so.

So what I wanted to do was create a line that was competitive, where you could find the products just around the corner. That is why we decided to go to the drugstore because you can find it anywhere. The price is very affordable compared to, say, Kerastase, so pretty much anybody can buy it. But you still have to be willing to embellish a little bit on your hair as opposed to buying a drugstore brand like Pantene, which is essentially cheaper.

Is it true or is it a myth that drugstore shampoo and conditioners like Pantene are going to leave wax and buildup on your hair compared to something that is more formulated for a salon?
Well, I really don’t know about Pantene. All I can tell you is this: It costs me more to manufacture my products than what [drugstore shampoos] are retailing for. And so, if you get the ingredients in a bowl of shampoo, it may be the same - but some of them have 99.9 percent water and .01 percent of the key ingredient. Some other ones are loaded with chalk! So it does depend on the formulas, and the way they are formulated has a big impact on the performance.

Come back tomorrow for more of the interview!

BellaSugar Interview: Carlos Rodriguez, Celebrity Colorist at Privé Salon

You know those amazing cuts and colors that make you stop and go, "Oh my gosh, I have to know-who does her hair?!"? Well, take a look at Kristin Chenoweth, who's starring in the fall show Pushing Daisies. I love this modern cut, and the depth of the color is beautiful. The man behind Kristin's new hue is Carlos Rodriguez of Privé Salon in Los Angeles. With 23 years in the business, he knows how to create contemporary, beautiful color. Along with coloring Kristin's hair, he's worked with Paulina Rubio, Kim Raver (you know, Audrey from 24), Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster.

I spoke with Carlos this week, and he was nice enough to share the details of Kristin's hair color-along with his thoughts on hair trends for fall. There's a wealth of expert information, so read on!

I love Kristin’s color-it looks really fresh and contemporary. Did you come up with the idea for the color, or did she?
It was a co-collaboration. We wanted to create a current, modern feel and look to the hair, while keeping in mind her new role. We started with a blonde base. I wanted to warm it up by using caramel and honey tones to create dimension. Then I went back in and painted some face-framing highlights in baby blonde tones. They draw out Kristin’s beautiful blue eyes. It shows off the shape of the cut, too.

For more about Kristin's color, along with Carlos' advice on avoiding the biggest mistake you can make with your colorist, read more

Short of going to see you at Privé, of course, if people want to get Kristin’s hair at their own salon, what should they tell their stylist?
I recommend warming your base all over. Create a nice, light, caramelly honey-ish tone. Go back and do some face-framing highlights.

What’s the best way to find a colorist?
I think the best thing is to not be fearful. Go in and interview hair colorists. Show them the images and tones you like, and moreso, what you don’t like. The number-one mistake a client can make is not communicating. Of course, it takes two parties-but being able to communicate about what clients like and don’t like is essential to create synergy.

What are some of the color trends this fall?
As we’re approaching fall, for brunettes, I like rich chocolate hair that shines and has that magazine-cover polish to it. I think for someone who’s more daring, why not play with auburn tones? I’m creating nice auburn tones and adding moments of cinnamon to create dimension.

And how do you get that kind of shiny hair?
I do a tone-on-tone color. I recommend having hair color professionally done and following up with a rich gloss. But honestly, for the individual who wants to play at home, there are some great gloss products on the market. I think for someone who wants to experiment without any serious damage, use a type of product very close to what your natural color is. If you’re going to experiment at home, make sure you stay within the range of your natural color.

What about fall shades for redheads and blondes?
Fiery copper with honey added to it to break it up is definitely “now” for fall. For a dark blonde who wants to brighten up her hair, try a couple tones in hand-painted highlights. They draw out the tones in the hair.

You work in Los Angeles. Do most of your clients want to go blonde?
I think we get a nice mix. More than anything, the client I have wants her hair to look beautiful. It’s about shine and maintaining the integrity of the hair. I’d rather have clients hear, “Gosh, you look great!” rather than, “Oh, you colored your hair.”

Is there any hair color that is terribly dated, that definitely needs to change?
Absolutely. Eggplant-that purple tone. It went out in the early ‘80s. The other one is having white-ish streaks on brown hair. Those are the hair color jobs you know were done at the mall. That gets me even more than eggplant.

You’ve been in the business for 23 years. How did you get your start?
I took a cosmetology course in high school on the advice of a friend because I needed electives. It worked out very well!

Privé Salon is at 7373 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles (323-931-5559).

Color It Like Beckham: An Interview With Posh's Colorist

Last year, upon the Beckham's much-anticipated arrival to the States, Celebrity colorist Johnny Ramirez welcomed Posh to her new home by "Californizing" that famous graduated bob to platinum blond levels.

Just this past weekend, Ramirez, who works at the Chris McMillan Salon in Beverly Hills, gave the petite trendsetter's chic pixie some extra zip, and I've got the exclusive details on what went down. Check out my interview below, and look out for some more of Johnny's hair-color advice to come:

Is Victoria just as funny in person as she is on TV?
"Victoria is the most generous, warm person. She's considerate, and super nice - not just to me - but to anybody."

Can you tell me a little about what you did do enhance Victoria's chestnut-brown hair?
"After discussing what she wanted, we decided to keep her a brunette. Victoria's ends were faded to a reddish warm color - this happens to most brunettes. To keep her a soft, natural medium brown, I started with her roots by applying a permanent hair color. Once the color was done processing, I combed it through the ends to break up the line at the shampoo bowl. Then . . . two different types of toners were used to tone the warm ends. I always finish my hair color with a gloss to lock in the color and seal it with shine. That's what makes color look healthy, natural, and beautiful."

To learn more about what products Victoria took home with her to maintain her look, read more.

What did you recommend to Victoria to keep her color looking fresh?
"Right now I've been playing around with the Davines shampoos. They come in different colors. For Victoria, I told her to use the one called Tobacco Shampoo ($22.50) and Tobacco Conditioner ($26.50) once a week. It doesn't have warmth in it, so it's more of a cool brown.

Anything else?
"I also sent her home with Davines Love Shampoo ($16) and Love Conditioner ($18.50). I love the citrusy smell - it's got a pomegranate smell, too. They (Davines) also have a Mask ($23.50). And those are the goodies I sent her home with."

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were the last New Moon stars to arrive on the red carpet in LA last night, but the crowds were happy to wait for the big three! They all looked fantastic - especially Kristen in her gorgeous Oscar de la Renta and sexy hair, who stopped to talk about how happy she was to be at an event with the fans. She said she doesn't have a favorite of all the hot dresses she's worn while out promoting the movie, but fell in love with this one when she saw it. Robert greeted all the fans with a huge smile, excitedly signing autographs for as many people as he could. He flashed an adorable smile to us when they announced Kristen's arrival right behind him, though the two were spread out and didn't pose on the red carpet together. The signs all over the event were amazing, showing the dedication of the Twilight lovers some of whom camped out for days before the big event.

Jennie Garth accompanied her husband Peter Facinelli, but joked that the scene she was most excited to see was Robert Pattinson shirtless! Always the understanding partner, Peter said that he sees where she's coming from since she's seen him shirtless thousands of times. Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene hit the premiere at almost the same time, meeting up on the red carpet for some interviews - though at one point he stepped on her train, whoops! Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser were excited to see each other and Dakota Fanning stood tall in her sky-high heels. Kristen happily posed with Joan Jett and Dakota after they all worked together on The Runaways. The whole cast was so excited to see so many fans out to support the movie and for it finally to be released this Friday. We've got tons of video from the premiere coming up on PopSugar Rush so stay tuned!

Bella Interview: Kristin Ess, Part III

Let's finish Friday with the last installment of my interview with celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess. I really enjoyed talking with her because she not only knows her hair stuff, she also has the kind of attitude that would make her fun to work with. In the first part of our interview, we talked about how she began working in a salon at the age of 16. Yesterday, she shared some hair trends, and today she talks about where you should scrimp and where you should spend on hair products.

What kinds of hair products are worth splurging on, and which can you get at a drugstore?
It depends on the hair. If you have long hair and highlights and you need moisture, spend the money on shampoo. It's different for everyone. As far as hairsprays go, there are definitely hairsprays that are more of an aid in styling than others. If I'm in a pinch in another city or country, and I have to run to the store in the middle of the night because I lost my bag or something, I can buy any hairspray at the grocery store. I know which ones on the market are doable. Rather than using Pantene, I'd rather use Aqua Net because I know it's going to hold for a photo shoot. It's horrendous and it's disgusting, but it works.

You should definitely splurge on a blow dryer. It makes all of the difference. If there's one thing I tell my clients, I always tell them to get a good blow dryer. But you don't need to splurge on a curling iron. My favorite curling iron is Hot Tools. It's the most amazing curling iron ever. They're so cheap and so amazing.

For the rest of the interview, read more.

Ah, good to know. I feel justified in my loving my T3 dryer.
That's the thing! It's very important because it takes care of your hair, for one. It's the difference between whether you're spending a half hour or an hour blow-drying your hair. And also, having a nozzle - some of the cheaper dryers don't come with a nozzle. One of the most important things for smoothing out hair that you're blow drying is to have a nozzle.

Why is that?
Because if you don't have a nozzle on it, basically the air comes out like a cyclone. It stirs up the air more than directs it. So if you have a nozzle, you almost don't need to use a brush; the nozzle takes all of the air and pushes it in one direction to smooth the cuticle 75 percent more.

Kristin Ess is a stylist at Warren-Tricomi in West Hollywood.

Emilia Fox Shows Us How To Age Proof Our Hair: Part 2

I'm thrilled that English rose Emilia Fox is the new face (and hair) of Charles Worthington's Time Defy Hair Care range. I spoke to the award-winning actress about her beauty routine and the film industry's portrayal of older women so be sure to check out the first part of my interview with Emilia. Here she discusses ageing and the role hair plays in feeling good about yourself.

What do you like about your age?
What I like about my age right now is that I know what suits me!

How does your hair affect your confidence?
I think most people would say the same -my hair really affects my confidence. When it’s styled for me I feel better, in the same way that wearing a beautiful dress or fantastic shoes makes you feel more confident. I love nothing better than having my hair done by someone who is an expert, like Charles.

For Emilia's views on how hairstyles help her get into character, just read more.

How important is hairstyle and hair colour to get into roles for the character you’re playing?
They're very important when getting into a role as it defines what period you’re in. I like that I can disguise myself and become another character through a look. The amount of changes that your hair goes through, you have to be able to look after it and make sure it looks as healthy as your face looks on screen – which is where Time Defy comes in.

If you could change anything over time what would it be?
I would request that time didn’t go so fast because there is still so much to do!

Bella Interview: Kristin Ess

Talk about overachievers. In high school, Kristin Ess was working at a posh Beverly Hills salon, paving the way for her current stylist spot at Warren-Tricomi salon in Los Angeles. At the young age of 20, she began working on runway shows, eventually creating hair for designers including Marc Jacobs, Diesel, St. John, Rami Kashou, and Thom Browne. She's also worked with Rachel McAdams, Amber Valetta, Rachael Leigh Cook, and the Hills ladies.

A few weeks ago, I got to talk with Kristin about her career, hair trends, and the best drugstore steals. Since we had a lot to talk about, I'm splitting the interview into a few parts. Be sure to come back tomorrow for more insights and advice from Kristin!

You started working in a Beverly Hills salon when you were in high school. How did you know at such a young age that you wanted to work with hair?
I have nine brothers and sisters-I'm number 10. Most of them were younger than me, so I was always doing someone's hair. It was always my thing. Everybody knew that's what I was going to do. I did a report on it in the fourth grade for my career report, and my mom still has that and it's framed. It's like, "I want to move to Beverly Hills and do hair for One Life to Live" or something. I just always knew I wanted to style hair.

For more, read more.

Before we talked, I was trying to think of well-known stylists that are women. I know of a ton that are men-Ted Gibson and Harry Josh, for example-but for women, it seems like there's Sally Hershberger but not a lot of other famous female stylists. Why do you think that is?
I don't know, but I'm working on that! It's always been my problem. Do you know Odille Gilbert from Paris? She's been in it for a long time. She's amazing. She's done Galliano runway, Viktor and Rolf, everything. And her work is very distinct-you know her work when you see it. There are a couple of women, but very few.

[Hair styling] is definitely saturated with men. It's funny, because I was actually watching the screening of Bumble & bumble Hair Heroes when it came out. I was sitting there with [B&b founder] Michael Gordon and I asked, "Why are there no women in this at all? You guys are styling women's hair and there are no women hairdressers." It's all men. It's just so funny to me.

Yeah, it's very strange because I feel there's such a bond with a hairdresser, and sometimes women might better understand what it's like to have long hair.
Exactly. It's funny because we always have that conversation. If there are men, whether there are gay or straight, I think sometimes a straight man doing hair knows what he wants to see a woman look like, so he can produce sexy hairstyles. And then gay men, I have conversations with these guys, and some are like, "I always wanted to have long hair, so I try it on my clients. With women, we know because of firsthand experience. It's interesting that you mention it-because people know it, but nobody really mentions the fact that there are not a lot of women doing editorial styling.

Come back tomorrow for more of my interview!
