If you caught my latest Designer Spotlight, you know to expect a masterpiece from architect and interior designer Scott Weston. His residential work is phenomenal but I've also got to give him cred in the commercial department. I was blown away by his design of this Sydney hair salon. It must be an absolute dream to step into. He went for a Marie Antoinette vibe with luxe silk curtains, faux boiserie on the walls, and a cotton candy palette. Quick Beauty Tips for Salon Satisfaction

I can't even remember the number of times I've walked into a salon asking for "a voluminous blow dry like Lauren Conrad" and have ended up looking like Sarah Harding! I also have friends who swear they only said they wanted a trim and yet came out with four inches lopped off. Plus I have a distant memory of some blonde highlights that were supposed to be subtle but in actual fact resembled tiger stripes.

Usually it's all down to the communication, or lack of, between you and the stylist. If you're unsure of what you want then book a consultation to discuss your style before the actual appointment. For an easy way to ensure you always leave the salon with the hair of your dreams, just read more.

Take in pictures. Hairstylists usually think visually as oppose to in words, so it's useful for them to see an image of the hair you want.
Be yourself. Don't dress differently when you're going to a salon, yes you want to make a good impression but you also want to look like you. If you're low maintenance and won't be bothered to blow dry everyday, it's not going to work if you get a high maintenance chop.
Be clear about a trim. Say the minimum and maximum amount of hair that you're happy to have cut off and be strict. If you think the hairdresser is taking off too much then ask them to stop.
Don't be put off by your stylist's personal style. I've had some of the best subtle semi-permanent colours, low lights and Upper East Side girl blow drys by stylists with peacock blue mohawks and multiple piercings.

Kate Heads to the Salon Before Getting Dressed to the Nines

Kate Hudson made a low-key trip the hair salon yesterday after a busy weekend of honoring heroes and attending award shows. Kate looked relaxed in her casual sportswear after her dress got a lot of attention at the American Music Awards on Sunday. Kate seemed to have a little trouble staying covered by her Versace number -styled by Rachel Zoe- as she and Nicole Kidman introduced their Nine costar Fergie and The Black Eyed Peas. Unfazed by the possible slip Kate headed backstage where she cozied up to an awaiting A-Rod before he was off to join the fun at the Lakers game.

Have You Ever Asked For a Hair Redo?

Have you ever left the salon feeling not-so-fabulous about your cut or color? Maybe the blond was a little too yellow for your liking, or there was an obvious bleed mark in your fringe. Or perhaps it was just that your new cut wasn't cooperating with the texture of your hair, leaving you with a string of bad hair days.

As for me, most recently, it was the latter. I liked the shape of my cut, but for some reason, nothing else was cooperating. Since I wasn't completely satisfied, I called up and asked for a redo. Ah, much better. Have you ever phoned in a "part two" for your hairstyle?

Getting the Brush-off

As I mentioned last week, I really hate being brushed. Of course, Brother Minou just looooooves it. He prances in circles when he first sees the Furminator comb and then he says, "It's not a toomuh." At which point I'm like, that's not even the right movie, you nimrod. He doesn't care. His feeble mind is bloated with anticipation for the grooming to come.

I, on the other hand, would rather wear gingham bloomers (something to look into - ed.) than have those evil rakes go through my fur. Personally, I think the whole ritual is barbaric, but Mom seems to think that having cat hair covering every surface is undesirable. (Yeah, I don't get her logic either.) So every now and then, I have to suffer through the humiliation of going to the cat salon. As you will see, I act like it is the biggest imposition in the world.

(PS) Mom thinks I look like Rudolph Valentino at 1:40.
(PPS) Those are mostly meows, not hisses.

Beauty Byte: Salon Selectives Makes a Comeback

Some of you might remember a brand from the '80s called Salon Selectives. It was one of the first mass-market haircare lines to promise salon style and results at an affordable price. However, after a buyout and brand redesign in 2001, the line suffered and had to be pulled from shelves.

But lucky for us, the line has been revived and is about to hit the shelves at a Rite Aid near you. This means we can expect the same fun, bright packaging with the original salon-quality formulations, expanded to include products that moisturize, curl, add volume, and all the rest of that good stuff we've come to expect. The product I'm most excited to try is "Fresh Hair," which promises to be a "Febreeze for the hair." It's supposed to add a fresh scent without weighing down the hair. With prices for the line ranging from just $3 to $4, I plan on picking it up and giving it a whirl. What about you?

Take Copious Notes From Your Stylist

You say honey, I say honey, but what color comes out on your hair? People have different interpretations of hair color descriptions, so just as it's smart to take pictures of what you like and don't like, to the salon, it's wise to keep track of your color.

My favorite stylist keeps index cards on all her clients with their colors, conditioning treatments, cuts, etc., which proved very handy when I relocated. I just had her copy it for me, down to application notes and times. Even if you're not planning to move or change stylists, many people have eliminated nonessential beauty treatments due to the recession and it'd be rather helpful to know what your highlights and lowlights were when the economy picks back up again, right?

Do You Ever Dry Your Hair With Paper Towels?

Recently, while perusing the Tabatha's Salon Takeover website (have you joined my We Love Tabatha group, by the way?), I came across a tip that I really hadn't heard before, although it seems to be reserved for the more frizz-prone or curly-haired set. Instead of rubbing water out with a towel, simply squeeze the moisture out with paper towels. The theory is that the softer texture of paper towels is less aggressive than than rougher-textured terry cloth towels.

It goes beyond paper towels, too. Often those with curly locks will opt for squeezing out the excess moisture with old cotton t-shirts or microfiber towels - a more environmental option, if you ask me. Sorry, Brawny Man. What about you? If you've got curly or particularly frizzy locks, do you go the nontraditional anti-terry-cloth route? If so, how's it working out for you?

Do You Immediately Restyle Your Hair After Leaving the Salon?

Getting pampered at the salon is one of life's little pleasures, from the massage at the shampoo bowl to the precision cut down to the final blow-dry and style. Recently, a co-worker and I were chatting about our salon visits, particularly the "style" portion of the service.

Both of us agreed that while we might love the results of our actual haircut and/or color, neither one of us are ever really all that excited about the way the look was finished. This often results in some immediate restyling upon exiting the salon's door. (Once we're out of sight from the stylist's view, of course.) Call us picky or creatures of habit, I suppose. What about you? Do you leave the salon with a bounce in your step, happy with the way your hair was styled, or do you end up doing a little makeshift salon action the minute you leave?
