Children across the country have cutting edge cuts and sassy hairstyles that have been sheared into shape or gelled up into the 'dos. Tween Trend Is All About the Tresses

Peroxided heads have long been considered pageant girl pretty, but now more and more mainstream tweens are heading to salons to take advantage of their services. And, it's their parents who foot the bill.

Gone are the days of the simple cut and blow dry - young ladies between the ages of eight and 12, some as young as six - are chemically treating their hair to get the natural and bold effects of highlights and lowlights. And, the intensity of the finished looks vary from subtle streaks to funky chunks.

A recent New York Times article about the trend said:

Hair treatments like shiny glosses or full-color dye plus highlights, once reserved for women with salaries and mortgages, have increasingly become the norm for pre-pubescent girls as more busy parents with discretionary income are willing to pay salon prices for what used to be done at home.

Basic and Beautiful Wedding Hairstyles

Finding the right hairstyle for your wedding day is a big deal, so don't be ashamed or embarrassed to play with different looks. I sat through five different trials trying everything from long, wavy extensions to updos. Heck, even celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves said that, "once Carmen Electra selected her wedding dress, I created 13 different hairstyles on her and took a Polaroid of each one so she could select the one which was perfect for her."

This is your day to shine - you should look fabulous! And a great suggestion, Ken. It's important to take a Polaroid so that your stylist knows exactly how to recreate the look. I know it all feels kinda vain, but once you find something you love, you'll be so happy to have one less detail to worry about on your wedding day!

Updo: This is a broad category because it can mean chignon, french twist, ballet bun or simple knot. You can part it on the side to modernize this classic look, or give some volume to the crown. Even though it may not feel like something you'd be interested in, I encourage you to try your hair styled off your neck and away from your face. It really allows you to have a fuss free night! Half Up, Half Down: This keeps your hair out of your eyes but still allows somewhat of a flowy and natural feel. This look is really popular with all types of brides. You can see Nicole Kidman's wedding hair here.
Long and Natural: This is great for someone that wants to look like themselves on their wedding day. This look is becoming ever more popular with modern and natural brides. I would opt for shine/loose waves. Check out Jennifer Aniston's lovely locks here.
Short Hair With Added Body: If you have short hair you've got to do something to give it some oomph. You could add curl, volume or even spikes to dress it up a little bit. Look at Victoria Beckham's wedding 'do here.

It's National Hairstyle Appreciation Day. Who would have known it? To celebrate this momentous occasion, we've been digging through our photo archives - and unfortunate, embarrassing "tagged" photos on Facebook - in search of the hairstyles we did not appreciate all that much. Happy Hairstyle Appreciation Day!

Yum always finds weird holidays. She'll be all, "Did you know that April is National Welding Month?" and all I can do is marvel at her encyclopedia knowledge. Yum pointed out that today is Hairstyle Appreciation Day.

It's a dubious holiday, to be sure, but I do have to say that I'm thrilled with the cute new cut I received from Christine Symonds. It's chic, sleek, and easy to care for. Best of all, I no longer look like Dee Dee Ramone with my old scraggly shag. So maybe there are reasons to celebrate. What's yours?

Victoria Beckham stepped out in LA yesterday with her sons to treat them to some frozen yoghurt (yum). Whilst still rocking her new wavy hairstyle, Victoria also seems to be debuting a slightly more relaxed style teaming a loose tee with panel leggings.

I have seen these leggings all over the High Street recently, and they're particularly flattering in a dark shade. The panels are either in a different colour or in a different fabric like at Gareth Pugh where leather inserts add edge (£530). Urban Outfitters have a more affordable take on the look with their sequin panelled leggings (£38).

Relaxed vs. Natural Hair vs. Weaves vs. Dreads

Here are highlights from OnSugar blog Krissy's One Stop Beauty Spot.

Women, especially black women, have the ability to change hairstyles like underwear. I support you ladies no matter what you do - just do it right and take care of your hair. For the most part we all practice the same principles when it comes to proper hair care (co-washing, ACV rinse, trims, deep conditioning, etc.). I'm always willing to help people with hair questions and concerns, or at least point them in the right direction. I know plenty of people in that area.

Where I stand on a lot of hair issues:

I'm anti kiddie perms and kiddie dreadlocks on children if they're at an age where they can't make that choice for themselves (unless, of course, it's part of your religion). It's not about the chemicals, it's about the fact that it's a permanent hairstyle on a child. What if your child decides they want to wear their natural hair? You'll have to either cut their hair to transition them to natural hair. Yes, you can remove dreads but unless someone can find me a "safe" method that doesn't damage the hair, then I won't be changing my mind about this.
I'm pro weaves and braids as long as it's done right and your hair is still being kept healthy. If your hair is being done too tight and coming out, it's time to find a new stylist.
I'm pro curly and natural hairstyles within corporate America. I hear a lot of natural haired beauties bragging about self-acceptance and mainstreaming natural hair, but they still search for corporate hairstyles because of their natural hair. A bun will always be conservative no matter what type of hair you have.
I've always encouraged hair dialogue among women of different nationalities. You'll be surprised by the things we all have in common. If your non-black friend is telling you about a great hair balm that she pays $15 for, take her on a trip to a local beauty supply store and show her where to buy it for $5.
