Easter is coming up this Sunday, and for those of you who celebrate and are also trying to watch your weight, this means another holiday of dealing with candy and sweets. The positive side is that there is no rule that says you have to fill your Easter basket with pounds of chocolate eggs and jellybeans. Fill your basket with these healthier alternatives instead:
- Carrots (since the Easter Bunny likes to share)
- Fresh fruit
- Homemade cookies that are filled with healthy ingredients like oats, raisins, dried cranberries, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips
- Bars of Dark chocolate
- Colored eggs made with homemade dyes
- Dark chocolate covered peanuts, pretzels, or raisins
- Mini banana bread muffins
- Fitness DVDs
- A scented candle
- Animal shaped hand soaps (my girls love these)

Pastel coated candy and egg shaped chocolate are tasty April indulgences, and there's a chance you're still on a sugar high from the holiday weekend. When you head to the store to buy ingredients for this week's healthy meals, resist the urge to pick up bags of discounted candy.
It's easier to justify spending money on junk food when it's half-priced.

I did it. I couldn't resist. The bags of candy were two for $5.00, so I thought I'd stock up for Halloween early, you know, for the trick-or-treaters.

Sure kids adore the costume aspect of Halloween but the number one reason why wee ones look forward to the ghoulish holiday? The hunt for candy. Chocolate bars, candy corn, and bags of Skittles can make a youngster hopelessly in love with sugar but leave their pearly whites in pain.

Clif, Balance, and Luna are a few of my favorite brands when choosing energy bars, but the popular packed-with-peanuts candy bar company wants to get in on the action too with their Snickers Marathon bars. I know what you're thinking. Snickers?

Halloween may be all about the costumes and candy, but that doesn't mean you can't trick kids with a treat that's healthy too. Take an all-time childhood favorite – the lollipop – and convert it into something that will fill trick-or-treaters up with necessary nutrients.
Take a selection of firm fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple and cut them into thick slices.

Yesterday, I snuck in a packet of delicious milk chocolate raisins after my healthy salad lunch, and afterward, I was awash in sugary sweet happiness (and guilt). But my candy got me thinking about the smell of chocolate which, inevitably, made me think of fragrance. And I realized what a delicious note chocolate is.

Traditional Easter egg hunts and baskets are a dentist's nightmare. I suggest asking the Easter bunny to pack your baskets with reading material, bath toys or tiny stuffed animals, but you may have to get more creative if you hope to fill your hunt eggs with something other than chocolate. For a list of healthier items you might consider putting in your eggs, read more
