Kellan Cozies Up to Ashley and Rachelle in the Pages of Self

Kellan Lutz looked cuddly in his sweaters with Ashley Greene and Rachelle Lefevre for a photo shoot in November's Self. Ashley stayed a little more covered up in these photos than her recent turn in Men's Fitness, saying about her style, "Classic meets sexy is the style I like. I spice up simple clothes with a great purse or shoes." Rachelle won't be reprising her role as Victoria in Eclipse, but she'll still be out to promote New Moon with the rest of the cast. She also chatted about her eclectic fashion, "I’ll wake up and say, 'I feel like a hippie today. Or a rocker.' My boyfriend teases me that I have costumes." Nicole Richie Brings Hippie-Chic Styles to Pea in the Pod

Next month expectant women who are fans of hippie-chic styles can move beyond vintage clothing stores to a new shopping resource. Known for her Bohemian baby-bump style, Nicole Richie is working with A Pea in the Pod on a collection of maxi dresses, tops, and bottoms that reflect her fashion sensibilities.

The mother to Harlow and a second babe due this Summer is also the face of the line, having played model at a recent ad photo shoot. Pregnant ladies will have to gather up the garments fast since the collection will only be available from August through January.

Has the Peace Sign Sold Out Its Meaning?

I remember drawing them on my notebook during the first Gulf War and not really knowing what they meant - and now the peace sign is turning the big 5-0. The famous symbol made its first official public appearance in 1958 to advocate nuclear disarmament, and has since been used to graphically support a range of efforts from economic justice to environmentalism. Nearly every altruistic group has used this iconic logo as a way to communicate the idea of universal brotherhood.

The designer of the symbol, Gerald Holtom, created the logo while in a big funk. He explains the symbol: “I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards . . .” (I never saw that until I read this, but now it makes sense!) Holtom died in 1985, and some say if he had lived this long, he might really understand the true meaning of the word “despair."

In a time of conflict and relative prosperity, like many things the peace sign has become a commodity. For those with some bucks to blow advertising their quest for peace, Tiffany is hawking a platinum and diamond peace symbol pendant to celebrate the symbol's creation. The pendant holds 4.8 carats of round-cut diamonds and costs $4,000. It makes one wonder what kind of good that money could do someone whose life was really torn by war. Tiffany isn't the only company using what could be the world’s most recognizable cry for understanding to make a profit. The peace sign has adorned everything from Fendi bags to Volkswagen cards and Ed Hardy t-shirts.

Of course, there are those who cry "poppycock!" After all, it’s just a symbol (and one free from copyright protection), and is free to be interpreted by anyone, from a clothing designer, jeweler, or a car manufacturer. Plus, won’t more exposure of the “brand” give it even more power? Simon Doonan, creative director at Barney’s British, thinks so:

Sure, it’s probably not what the hippies had in mind, for it to become a marketing campaign for a department store. But it’s a symbol of the mainstream of counter-culture ideas, of things that were part of the alternative lifestyle - like environmentalism, and organic food. Isn’t that ultimately what the hippies would have wanted?

Perhaps, though the worry remains that the only power the symbol is going to gain is purchasing power. Is the peace sign on the verge of being played out? Does a peace sign done in $4,000 worth of diamonds still mean the same thing?

Uma's On Being Aloof, Intimidated And Talkative

Uma Thurman is the cover star of December's InStyle, and inside the magazine she's interviewed about everything from her relationships to aging, acting and her stalking nightmare. You can read the interview in full in the magazine, but for now, here are some excerpts:

On her reputation: “I have a reputation for being aloof, but the truth is I’m initially intimidated by people. Get me started though and I won’t come up for air.”
On her recent engagement to Swiss Financer Arpad Busson: “I know a lot will be written about it - most of it untrue I should add. What can I say? I’m excited, optimistic and joyful.”
On her divorce from Ethan Hawke: “It has been four years and I don’t want to focus my life on that. If people want to know what I think of my ex-husband having another child, why not just say that I wish the father of my children all the happiness in the world?”

On the male fan who was stalking her: “I don’t want to give any more energy to that. But if anyone is forced to call 911 and as a result something becomes a police matter, you can’t abandon the process: you need to cooperate and allow the police to do what they need to do. I wasn’t being courageous. It was a situation I needed to see through in order to protect my family.”
On having children: “I understand that raising children is universally difficult and that people read an article hoping for something worthwhile in it. The truth is I am not on some inside track. I have no incredible revelations to share.”
When asked if she plans to have more children: “I can safely say I don’t know, if it’s meant to happen it will. I love and adore being a mother. It’s the greatest gift I’ve ever been given.”
On fashion: “I’ve always admired how European women have such effortless style, as though they’ve been culturally raised to wear clothes gracefully and effortlessly. There’s something wrong about trying too hard to be fashionable. When people are too ‘outfitted’, it comes across as self-conscious.”
On being a celebrity: “Being a celebrity is one of the fringe aspects of my job and one I’ve been tutored in, so to speak. I’ve learnt how to use it in a positive way and benefited from the brush with fame I had in my teens. It’s important to stay clear headed and not to let fame become toxic.”
On the paparazzi: “I’m sometimes confused by what they choose to photograph. On the set of Motherhood, I was in a hippie floral dress and Birkenstocks. I can’t imagine who would be interested in seeing me like that.”
On aging: “For an actress, every developmental stage is a culling of the herd. New people are found and pushed to the forefront. It freaks me out a little less these days. It makes it easier having gone through working as a teenager and being told that there would be no career for me as a 20 year old. And then working as a 20 year old and being told that was it. And then having children and being told there wouldn’t be a career for me now. The characters I get to play as a mature woman are much more interesting than the ingénues I got to play as a kid, so I feel okay about it.”
On her looks: “It’s the same with all actresses. Whether it’s there beautiful long wavy hair or their extraordinary lips or their sparkling green eyes or warm laugh, they’re pegged to some physical attribute. If I looked distinctly different, I would have a different kind of career and different kinds of challenges. But there are plenty of challenges that come from being a tall girl. Nobody would have thought I would have a 20-year career in front of me when I started!”

A Few Fab Words With Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie thinks there's nothing cuter than a little boy dressed in a suit. I know this because she told me. Well, it is pretty cute. We snuck Richie away at a recent fundraiser event to talk charity, fashion, and her evolving brand House of Harlow. This happened the night after the Chanel party, so as you can see, Fab was on a celebrity binge. I think I got my fix after an intimate chat with the funny and laid-back Richie at the Cusp Boutique in LA. Nick Verreos, Project Runway alum and friend of Nicole, was also there so stayed tuned to hear what's new with him.

Nicole partnered up with Signorelli to create T-shirts benefiting The Children's Health Fund. She proudly announced raising $400,000! She was wearing the black tank with Angel motif - stay tuned to enter to win the tank Nicole was wearing that benefits the Fund. But first, a few Fab words . . .

What brings you here?

We’re partnering up with Signorelli to raise money for the Children’s Health Fund. Just in Los Angeles, there are 500,000 children without health care and by selling the T-shirts a large amount of the proceeds are helping to fund building for mobile units. So the mobile units can go around and provide immediate health care.

Did you have any say in the design of the shirts?

I didn’t but they sent me options and I went with the black tank, I wear a lot of black.

Can we talk about your jewelry line that’s in the works?

Yes. It’s called House of Harlow and it’s actually the beginning of a brand that I’m developing of children’s apparel and also a clothing line, shoes, bags, sunglasses, everything. I’m really excited. The jewelry is first and it will be out in late August.

Can you tell us about the children’s collection?

I’m at the very beginning stages but I’m designing adult clothes for babies. The girl’s clothes are designed after my personal clothing and the guy’s clothes are going to be designed after Joel’s.

So it’s going to be like a mini-me sort of thing.

Yes, exactly. So little hippie dresses for girls and sleeveless tops and suits for boys. I think there’s nothing cuter than a little boy dressed in a suit.

And what else are you wearing?

I think the jacket is Stella McCartney - is it? - the pants are Balenciaga, and Loubs. (And she was carrying her black Balenciaga motorcycle bag – with iPod headphones falling out).

How would you describe your personal style?

I don’t know how to answer that! I really don’t know, I feel like I wear the same thing every day. I just accessorize differently and wear whatever I’m comfortable in. Like, when I’m with the baby I wear flats and when I’m not I wear heels. It just depends on what mood I’m in.

How has your style evolved?

I still like to dress up. I think every girl, whether you’re 13 or in your twenties, should always try new things. I mean, I’ve had my hair pink and brown and blonde and I think it’s all about trying new things; I’m really open to new looks. I love fashion so much that I definitely want to take it to the next level and I’m really excited about it all.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Marc Jacobs

Not only was Marc inspired by early Americana - he masterminded the colors, fabrics, jewels and accessories. For Marc's re(marc)able Spring, there were also goofy shoes, mismatched prints, Stephen Jones-designed boater hats, obi belts, and wackadoodle bags. There was also an elegant vaudeville feel, and are those shoulder pads I see? The mirror panels up and down the runway were reminiscent of a fun house - a fashion fun house. I love it when Marc goes maximum, and not minimum. Fab sightings included Jennifer Lopez (in white Roland Mouret), Winona Ryder, Rachel Zoe (we chatted, more on that later), Kelly Osbourne, Nicole Richie in a rhinestone hippie headband, Sofia Coppola, and Lauren Hutton. Not only was the event a circus, the catwalk was, too.9:10 p.m.: “Ladies and gentleman please take your seats, we are about to begin the show.” I honestly think Marc is still trying to make up for lost time (show time was 9 p.m.). People were running to get their seats, it was slightly sardine-like.

The clothes: fantastical, colorful, and confused. Suits and separates were mismatched, and all cinched, gathered and bustled with cloth obi belts. Metallic brocade, plaid, and stripes were all whipped together; silhouettes were all over the place, draping was key. And the shoes - which model Jordan Dunn post-show asked me if I noticed - were wonderfully experimental. There was no black in sight until the end, when some stunning dresses appeared, one favorite adorned with gold safety pins at the bodice. This collection was controlled chaos. I spoke of the hats, and stacked bangles and architectural necklaces were added fun. Fun fashion house.

Rich Hippie Hair at Nanette Lepore

Hey Jimmy Paul, Serena van der Woodsen called. She wants her hair back! At Nanette Lepore, Bumble & Bumble hairstylist Jimmy Paul created a look that was very similar to the one Serena wore to Blair's party on Monday night's episode (if you got a perfect score on the quiz, you know this). So get excited: not only do you get to find out from a master how to have Serena hair, you can now tell people you're inspired by Nanette Lepore's Spring 2009 runway - not, um, a teen soap opera.

For this look, which Paul described as "boho, hippie inspired," Paul began with natural waves enhanced by Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. "If a girl's hair is fine, we're using a curling iron. If she has very fine hair, we'll put in more Surf Spray at the roots to enhance the wave before curling it. If they come with waves that need a little help, we're doing just the Surf Spray. If a girl has dry hair, we're using Styling Balm on the ends. It's meant to look very natural." And the braids? "To open up the face, we're putting one on either side with a middle part and a few random ones. Some models have buns to show the details on the back of the clothes. It's a little haphazard, a little off-center, braided, and looped around with a few bobby pins. It's supposed to look very beachy, like a girl did it herself." So what is the best way to do it yourself? "It's easier to coax the wave out of wet hair, so spray in some Surf Spray, more towards the middle and the ends. It's supposed to be fuller on the ends and flatter on top. With a curling iron, concentrate more on the ends, you don't have to go all the way to the root." Throw in some braids and you're golden.
