The Germiest Places at Home

I know that I've been a little obsessed about germs lately, but it's flu season and I'm trying to get through this one unharmed. I'm washing my hands constantly, not touching my face - I'm even making my own hand sanitizer. The Hygiene Council just released this year's findings of its annual home hygiene study, and the results have me motivated to do some serious Fall cleaning. Bring the Outdoors In: Animal Themed Home Accessories

After that fun Jonathan Adler pottery post I just couldn't get enough of the animal home accessories. So I dug up a few cute things from one of my favorite shopping inspirations, Charles and Marie and UK design shop Slam Design. I especially love the Dog Magazine Rack and fish drain stopper. Seriously, how cute is that!?

I also took a liking to the Deer Bookends, the Seal Coin Bank, and the Farm Animal Rubber Bands, and would totally toss the kitty pocket mirror into my bag. And just to throw in something for the outside of your home, there's a solar birdhouse that boasts a light-up perch. It's like a little porch light for your winged friends!

Jonathan Adler's New Pottery Collection Is Totally Wild

Chic designer Jonathan Adler, who produced one of my favorite pet bed designs, is showing off his love for animals in a new way - with pottery and home accessories! His line of place card holders, pottery, salt and pepper shakers and lamps made in the likeness of whales, penguins, giraffes and hippos is right up my alley - it's all wild, baby! These goodies are available for purchase on his website ($18-$700) now, but if we're really lucky, we may see a few of the items on the shelves at Target. I'm pretty sure I've already seen the bull place card holder and snail napkin ring there already. Although the dachshund up there on top can't be considered a wild animal, he sure could use some love. Just look at that swaying back!

Put a Dog (or Cat) On Your Wall With Blik Decals

I enjoy incorporating a love of animals into my decor and these cute pups can be added to my household with nary a scratchmark. The sweet decals can find a happy home on walls, windows, floors (any surface really) and won't make your actual pets jealous. Birdy and Dottie Mae are the little puppies of Twenty, who works hard as a mascot at the fire station. Whether they're tagging along on a fire truck or playing quietly in the corner, Birdy and Dottie Mae feel content and adored. In fact, Twenty gives her babies so much love that a city full of firefighters couldn't begin to extinguish her affection.

That's too cute. Sadly, there are no Boston Terriers (yet . . . fingers crossed) but at least their smooshy cousins, the Pugs, get some love – check out the available sets when you read more.

Do Tell: What Would You Save If Your House Was on Fire?

It's scary how many wildfires we seem to have in California these days. The tragedies always make me think about how awful it would be to go through a fire, and I start to ponder the hypothetical question of what I would save if my house were burning.

My mom often said that if she could only save one thing, it would be our family photos - though that's not as relevant today in the age of digital photography. Has your home ever caught fire? If so, you probably went the safe route and saved yourself before your stuff. But if your house were burning and you could only save one thing, what would it be?

Do You Live in a Stressful City?

Forbes is at it again, but this time they are looking at the 10 most stressful cities in America. They constructed their list after looking at the country's 40 largest metropolitan areas and examining quality of life indicators. They looked at the housing market, cost of living, price of gas, environmental factors such as weather and air quality, and lastly, population density.

According to Forbes:

Residents of the cities on our list acutely experience the shifts wrought by global and local economies in turmoil. In fact, it's "bedrock security issues" like housing affordability, job security and cost of living [that] drive anxiety, says Edward Hallowell, M.D., a former professor at Harvard Medical School and founder of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, Mass.

Dear Poll: Did You Grow Up in an Affectionate Household?

My family has always been affectionate both physically and verbally, so it wasn’t until high school that I realized not every family was like mine. Other families - although equally as loving - didn’t necessarily go around saying “I love you” every time someone left the house. Neither is better, but I do think the level of affection in the household you grew up in will have an effect on the adult home you make for yourself. So did you grow up in a family that was quick to show affection?

This Just In: Home Magazine Folds

Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. has announced that it will pull the plug on its struggling shelter magazine, Home, due to "sharp declines in the 'mid-market home sector'," according to the Wall Street Journal. Home will join the ranks of fellow folded shelter titles, Conde Nast's House & Garden and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's Blueprint. In a company press release, Jack Kliger, President and CEO of HFM U.S, said, "The current economic environment is difficult, and the mid-market home sector has been particularly hard hit. When the middle market recovers, we will consider future publication of Home using the special interest publication newsstand model." Another one bites the dust. In this uncertain real estate market, this comes as no surprise. But, considering that House Beautiful had a 19 percent increase in ad pages in its second quarter, and Domino increased circulation by 82 percent to 1.1 million in the first half, it seems that only the fittest survive.

Do Tell: Is Your Parents' House Still "Home"?

Though it can sometimes take a few tries, the majority of us end up getting out of our parents' house between our late-teens and mid-twenties. And of course, moving out is very much a rite of passage on the path to adulthood; you learn how to pay the bills and create a place that’s all your own.

I love my family dearly, but I know I’d never give up my independence to live with them again. Still, when I think of my parents' house, I get warm thoughts, and when I’m there, I truly feel at home. Do you feel the same way? Is where your family lives home to you? Or is your own house the only place you feel most at home?
