I've become fascinated with hair products of a very different sort lately. After my experience with the hair shirt, I found out that there's a whole world of human-hair-containing materials and objects that I never knew existed, and to be honest the things people are capable of doing with it leave me absolutely nonplussed. Click through to see five of the most extreme uses people have found just off the tops of their heads.

Over the weekend, I was walking by a building when I saw this (forgive the camera phone pic; it was all I had with me) in a window and stopped cold. "Is that . .

From a biological perspective, hair is like a little diary giving clues about your personality, from where you live to what you smoke to what you tend to eat. But from a social perspective, hair can give clues about you in a whole other way. It might be stereotyping, but it is human nature for people to form impressions about other people within mere seconds.

Like Fab, I'm all for statement-making pieces that take an outfit from blah to stupendous. But I'm not so sure about this Bijules NYC hair chain ($220). Made of real, dyed human hair, the necklace comes with its own comb and box.

Chris Rock's first shot at a documentary was spurred on by a simple question his daughter asked: "Daddy, why don't I have good hair?" Good Hair is Rock's quest to find out what that is, and why we — men and women, black and white — care so much.
It's not a race relations angle as much as the trailer makes it seem, but rather an investigation into the phenomenon his two young daughters are growing up into: that straight European hair is what's desirable, beautiful, and worth lots of money and pain to get.

In the past couple of months, we've seen human hair shirts, hair jewelry, hair dresses, and now this — a hair chair from design team Baron & Baron. What is with this trend, my people, for serious? Human hair is great and all, but I'm getting worried that by next year, if fashion and design peeps get their way, I'm gonna have to be conditioning and detangling all my sweaters.

For hundreds of years, people made jewelry, art, and clothing out of their own hair and the hair of loved ones. In fact, during the Victorian era, there was a near mania for hair jewelry — necklaces, earrings, bracelets, even watch fobs made from the hair of deceased loved ones were de rigueur. Today, people continue to use human hair in jewelry for a variety of ends, some beautiful, some gruesome, and some a little of both.
