Are Human Rights For Non-Humans Too?

Paula Stibbe, an Englishwoman living in Austria, wants to adopt Matthew - a 26-year-old chimpanzee - when his habitat sanctuary closes. The problem? Austrian law says only humans are allowed guardians.

Not satisfied with Austria's Supreme Court's rejection of their request to give the chimp legal standing, Matthew's advocates are appealing to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France. Stibbe explained that they are not trying to get him declared a human, just a person. (I guess that must be a legal distinction.) She has argued:

Everybody who knows him personally will see him as a person. In his home in the African jungle, he would have been well able to look after himself without a guardian. But since he was abducted into an alien environment, traumatized and locked up in an enclosure, it did become necessary for me to act on his behalf to secure the donation money for him and to avoid his deportation. Since he has no close relatives, I am doing this as the person closest to him.

Matthew was captured as a baby and smuggled into Austria to be used for pharmaceutical research. If he is not recognized as a person, he could be sold or killed for economic profit.

Does Matthew's predicament require a less extreme solution? If he is considered a person, is he entitled all human rights? Should there by a separate framework for animal and human rights, or should we all be treated with the same level of dignity?

Irish Women: Abortion Is a Human Right

In Ireland abortion is illegal unless the pregnancy endangers the life (not just the health) of a woman. Three Irish women have sued their country in the European Court of Human Rights, claiming that the ban violates their human rights - one woman was undergoing chemo when she became pregnant; another had her children taken away by the government after she became pregnant because she couldn't care for all of them; and the third faced a dangerous ectopic pregnancy. All couldn't receive legal abortions in Ireland.

The government will present a staunch defense. Ireland contends that the European Convention on Human Rights does not confer a right to an abortion, and that member nations would never have voted for it if it did. Two American prolife groups were also allowed to file briefs with the court. To see what they have to say, read more.

The American groups argue that there is no international right to abortion, and that unborn children should be guaranteed the protection the typically prolife Irish people gave them.

The same human rights court considering the Irish abortion case previously ordered Poland to guarantee legal abortions if a pregnancy threatens a woman's health, is a result of a crime, or if the fetus is seriously malformed. The court could order Ireland to do the same thing.

Gear Up For the 2009 Nike+ Human Race

Last year, Nike hosted the world's largest running event - the first Nike+ Human Race had over 780,000 participants. It was such a hit, they're hosting another one on October 24, 2009, with the hope that this year it will be even bigger.

This race gives runners all over the globe the chance to run a 10K together on the same day. If you want to be part of it, there are two ways you can join. Either sign up for one of the runs hosted by Nike in more than 30 cities around the world. Or you can run a 10K wherever you choose - on a treadmill, in the woods, or by the beach. Just track your run with the Nike+ Sports Kit or the Sportband. Then upload your race data to nikeplus.com.

I did this race last year and it felt amazing to know that hundreds of thousands of people were running the 6.2 miles along with me, so I definitely plan on doing it again this year. If you're interested as well, register here, and then start training - you have about two months until race day.

- Translation of the headline and text on this unlikely PSA. Mikado Publicis ad agency placed images of women inside food packaging in ordinary Luxembourg supermarkets to raise awareness about human trafficking. This trend of using shocking images of women to raise awareness on behalf of women is getting a little out of hand.

Bush Declares Jan. 18 Sanctity of Human Life Day

This may be Barack Obama's big weekend leading up to the inauguration and all, but that hasn't stopped still-President Bush from declaring Saturday "National Sanctity of Human Life Day." In a nod to pro-life Republicans about to be exiled from power, Bush's proclamation states:

All human life is a gift from our creator that is sacred, unique and worthy of protection. On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, our country recognizes that each person, including every person waiting to be born, has a special place and purpose in this world.

The official statement goes on to outline policies under Bush that have built a "culture of life," including abstinence and adoption promotion, parental notification, and stopping federal funding of abortions overseas.
