Really nice how some people on here can only see the selfish side of things. If you lived out here in California(as i do) around these fire devastated areas, you might understand a bit more how terrible the damage was. Gwen is awesome to give her money to help the cause...she didnt have to, but she is a born and raised Californian who supports her home state. Instead you focus on the negative....pffft!

Novaraen - while I agree that her raising money for the fires is a commendable thing, it does not negate the fact that what she also does regularly is participate in cultural appropriation.

To ignore that fact and/or make it out as if it bears little significance is offensive to those who feel offended by her behavior (did you know that there are Asian groups that have called for a boycott of all things GS?) and pretty close minded.

Yeah, it's nice that Gwen is donating money. Let's face it, she didn't have to do it, and she's savvy for getting some good PR for it. Plus, as someone else said, she's a SoCal girl — this is her part of the country, after all.

But I have to agree with Alisha_Stiletto on the Harajuku Girls. The "human as accessory" weirds me out. I like a lot of Gwen's music and can see that she's influenced by a lot of cultures... but there's something "off" about hiring those girls to dance with her, giggle a lot, and literally bow down to her. It just feeds a lot of stereotypes. Plus, and this might just drive me bonkers, Gwen keeps mispronouncing Harajuku! yargh! I don't think Gwen is actively trying to offend anybody at all — but I do think the Harajuku Girls period of her career was weird and uncomfortable for me.

Perhaps the 'ladies' here should take a couple of moments to actually educate themselves as to what cultural appropriation is. Perhaps we should be taking into account that there are MANY Asian people out there who are deeply offended by her taking their culture in efforts to make it trendy. And Gwen dismissises these expressions of disapproval - that is the first reaction of the Racist. Denial and Dismissal.

If we look at her video "Hollaback Girl" - we see the Harajuku girls depicted as Cholas. Which 1: reinforces negative stereotypes of Chicana women in the area (yes, they exist, but why promote it?) 2: Takes from a culture of which she is not part of.

No one cares about Jennifer Lopez anymore, and hearing that her new album is fizzling and the record company is flipping out about the cost of promoting her is no surprise. I saw a commercial for the single, and i laughed out loud at the horrible choreography and her sorry excuse for singing.

Gwen creeps me out for the most part and I really can't stand her but kudos for doing a charitable thing, especially considering how much she must rake in with all her ventures.

It may be that all some people see about the Harajuku girls is that they're Japanese. Japanese, thanks. Asian is a pretty big term. But, that's a little silly IMO. She doesn't drag just any old random Asian or even any old random Japanese person on stage with her.

What you're saying is a little like saying that someone who isn't white can't dig on country music and Wranglers because that would be racist against white people. She specifically digs on the Harajuku style. Last I checked, every Asian in the world wasn't cruising Shibuya or wearing wacky clothes.

On another note, I think it's great that she's passing those profits on. You never know how the backroom deals work. It may be that she agreed to publicize it because the charity asked her to. Regardless, it may spur other people to donate and that's a good thing.

I think it's a really interesting question to raise about Gwen. I was uncomfortable with the Harajuku girls too.

I don't think there's anything wrong, per se, with cultural appropriation. For instance, I knew a girl in college - protestant, white, from new england - that married a Pakistani guy. She converted to Islam, wore the hijab, starting eating halal food, and learning urdu. Is that cultural appropriation too? She did it for love, no doubt, but she wasn't the type of person who would convert to a religion without really believing in it as well.

When Madonna calls herself Jewish and uses a cantor singing one of the most holy Jewish prayers in her song Issac, is that racist? Or how about when she went through her whole "Latina" phase?

I don't know. The point is, there's such a thin line between admiring a culture - like loving Rasta music and educating yourself in the music by working with Rasta artists and learning about the culture and the history - to using your interest in a way that is base and degrading.

I've never liked Eva Mendes and I never really find her beautiful like everyone else and I think she was just really stupid with that "joke". Joaquin's awesome. I love him.
