Stunts and Stunners At The MTV VMA Show!

The guests at the MTV VMAs looked great on the red carpet last night, but let's not forget they were all there for the show and the awards! Russell Brand hosted the event, and was surprisingly not the one at the centre of controversy this morning, after Kanye West managed to be the one upsetting people at the event. After announcing that the winner for Best Female Video was Taylor Swift he interrupted her speech, saying: Taylor, I'm really happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time." Beyonce later won Best Video of the Year and invited Taylor up on stage with her as she made her speech. Kanye was booed off stage and later asked to leave the event. He took to his blog to apologise to Taylor. Aside from that, both Beyonce and Taylor put on great performances, as did Green Day, Alicia Keys, Diddy, and Pink who rocked above the stage with a trapeze artist!

VMAs Bring Kanye's Drama, New Moon, MJ Love and More!

The MTV VMAs brought its share of drama last night - some amazing performances, a heartfelt Michael Jackson tribute, and a huge moment that had everyone talking - it was a show that will go down in history. Check out all the winners here! The biggest story of the night was Kanye West making a scene when Taylor Swift won Best Female Video, but thankfully it all ended well when Beyonce Knowles sweetly called her up onto the stage to have her moment and he apologized profusely. The night was dedicated to Michael Jackson and kicked off with a touching tribute from Madonna and a performance including his sister Janet. The other big moment came when Kristen Stewart debuted her hot short haircut on stage with Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner to debut another New Moon trailer - watch it here.

Eminem was also a big winner for the night, walking away with a Moonman and participating in some funny sketches with Tracey Morgan. Lady GaGa had countless costume changes and a performance that left her hanging covered in fake blood. We loved seeing Jay-Z finish off the night with Alicia Keys as well as Pink's trapeze act and Beyonce's big group "Single Ladies." Russell Brand's act is familiar after last year and we must admit we were happy to see Adam Brody on stage with Megan Fox to promote Jennifer's Body.

Year One: Primitive Humor

The trailer for the new movie from director Harold Ramis, Year One, kind of confused me. How were two cavemen types (Michael Cera and Jack Black) bumping into Romans? What? Well, it turns out nothing regarding an accurate historic timeline in this movie makes sense, but that's OK. It's the least of its problems.

If I had to describe this comedy in one sentence I would say it's as if a Mel Brooks comedy and a so-so Saturday Night Live sketch had a baby. It's a gross-out buddy comedy set in the Old Testament that generates a few good laughs. As a comedy duo, Black and Cera are surprisingly good together - although each relies heavily on his respective well-worn shtick. I'm also genuinely surprised at how much mileage the script is able to get out of riffing on what is essentially one big joke about ancient humans and the Bible.

So that's the good news. There is some bad news, though, which you can learn about if you read more.

Black and Cera play two men from a tribe that is apparently separated from the rest of civilization. They are both really bad at the things humans in their tribe need to master (hunting and gathering) and they get themselves banished. Before long they're rubbing elbows with Biblical celebrities like Cain (David Cross) and Abel (Paul Rudd) and they find themselves in and out of slavery. In the end, they're mostly concerned with boobs and hitting on ladies.

This movie is packed full of gross-out humor, and I use the word "humor" lightly. There are fart, poop, pee, sex, and armpit hair jokes galore. And they are rarely funny. OK, fine. The scene where Cera pees on his own face is a little funny but the rest of it is just really . . . tiresome, not to mention disgusting. It just never ends. There's another scene with Cera in which his character is forced to sleep in a bed with a country boy who farts a lot. It's about five full minutes of screen time devoted to farting. I laughed a little at the beginning but there comes a point when one just wants the farting to end.

The saving grace here is the supporting cast. Cera's mumbly shtick only goes so far, as does Black's exuberance. It's a blessing when someone like Hank Azaria shows up on screen to give the audience a little break from those two. Azaria plays Abraham, a man obsessed with circumcision. There is a decent amount of brain power and wit behind Azaria's performance that elevates what is basically a silly fourth grader joke about male genitalia to a slightly higher level. This movie could have used more of that.

Mostly, though, there isn't anything particularly new or inventive about the gags in this movie. The broad humor feels borrowed from other, funnier movies like History of the World, Part I. It's not that Year One is terrible; it's just that you've seen it all before and you've probably seen it done better. And you know, I bet in year one, early humans gathered around to watch someone fart and then they laughed hysterically. Maybe that even counted as an entire standup routine. But this is 2009. A little wit with that fart would be nice.

Michael Cera and Jack Black coordinated in purple accents for the premiere of Year One in NYC last night. Their costar Christopher Mintz-Plasse was lucky enough to have gorgeous Zoe Kravitz on his arm, who stood out in her glittery dress among all the funny men on the red carpet. Ed Helms also came out to show his support, and even though The Hangover will be getting some competition at the box office this weekend, he and the boys already have a sequel in the works.

Emily Joins Jason, Jack and James For Gulliver's Travels

The all-star cast of Gulliver's Travels gathered in Greenwich yesterday to film scenes for the movie. After starring as The Young Victoria, Emily Blunt is back in a royal role as the Princess of Lilliputia. She had a busy time on set, throwing punches at The IT Crowd's Chris O'Dowd and kissing Jason Segel. Jack Black, who plays the eponymous Gulliver in the "contemporary reimagining of the classic Jonathan Swift tale", was also on set and chatted with his costars, including James Corden. James is thrilled to be involved in the film, saying: "I was lucky enough to meet Jack when I went to America to audition with him. I have never done a big studio picture, so I am really looking forward to it." Catherine Tate and Billy Conolly also star in the film, which is due for release in June 2010. Will you go and see it?

Reese Celebrates Her Birthday With Monster and Aliens

Birthday girl Reese Witherspoon struck a serious pose on the blue carpet Sunday afternoon at the LA premiere of Monsters vs. Aliens. She then got a little sillier doing her best Mr. Spock Vulcan greeting while wearing a sexy, short Rodarte dress, hot off the runway. Costars Kiefer Sutherland, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen and Will Arnett with wife Amy Poehler all joined Reese at the event. Paul Rudd, who is also in the film, flashed a big smile, and considering his film, I Love You, Man, came in second at the box office this weekend he has plenty of reasons to be thrilled. Looks like it will be a good month for him.

First Glance: Year One - See It or Skip It?

Funnymen Jack Black and Michael Cera have teamed up for new movie Year One, in which they star as a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers who get banished from their primitive village, and then end up going on an epic journey through the ancient world.

Olivia Wilde, Paul Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Oliver Platt and David Cross are just a few of the actors that show up along the way in this movie, directed by Harold Ramis. It looks like a traditional road trip buddy film, with the twist of the time period, and the trailer did make me laugh which definitely makes me want to see it.

But what do you think - will you go and see Jack and Michael when Year One comes out in June? Let me know!
