The Last Station: See It or Skip It?

The Last Station is a historical drama about Leo Tolstoy with Christopher Plummer cast as the Russian author, and Helen Mirren as his wife. She premiered it at the Rome Film Festival last month. They are joined by Paul Giamatti, Kerry Condon, James McAvoy and his real-life wife Anne-Marie Duff in the beautiful looking film, which explores Tolstoy's attempt to balance his wealth with his desire to life without material objects. It's due out in the UK on 19 Feb. 2010, so check out the trailer and vote to let me know: will you see it or skip it?

James McAvoy May Star in Redford's Lincoln Movie

Can there ever be too much James McAvoy news in one day? I think not. Especially when one news item pairs the adorable actor up with Seth Rogen and another item has him possibly acting in a movie directed by Robert Redford. Titled The Conspirator, Redford's film is described as an indie historical drama about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Interestingly, though, the project will be focused on a woman: Mary Surratt, the alleged conspirator of assassin John Wilkes Booth. Here's more on the woman's story:

Surratt's is a compelling story. A Washington D.C. boardinghouse owner who sympathized with the Confederates, she was allegedly part of the plot to kill Lincoln, supplying Wilkes Booth and his accomplice David Herold weapons at her tavern after the assassin had shot the president at Ford's Theater.

Surratt's son John was also alleged to be part of the conspiracy. Mary Surratt was eventually convicted and hanged for conspiring to kill the president; her son went on the lam and eventually was put on trial but was never convicted, living until 1916.

The pic will also center on a young Union hero named Frederick Aiken who was appointed to defend Mary Surratt, and who comes to believe that the widow is innocent.

McAvoy is reportedly at the top of a list of potential actors for one of the lead roles, though no news yet on who will play the conspiratorial leading lady. I have loved seeing McAvoy in period pieces (Atonement and Becoming Jane, particularly) so this should be good. Now we just need to know who will take the main female role - any suggestions on who should play Mary Surratt?

James McAvoy Jumps Aboard Seth Rogen's Cancer Comedy

I know, I know - the words "cancer" and "comedy" don't exactly go together, but Seth Rogen and James McAvoy are ready to make us believe otherwise. The guys are set to star in a film adaptation of Will Reiser's novel, I'm With Cancer. Reiser also wrote the screenplay, which tells the story of his own experience battling and defeating cancer in his 20s. The movie will be directed by Nicole Holofcener, and Rogen will pull double duty as a producer.

McAvoy will star as Reiser's onscreen counterpart, and I have to say that I'm excited to see him return to comedy. He first caught my eye as the wacky brother in Wimbledon (yes, I love that movie and will not be ashamed), but since then it's been mostly heavy stuff like Atonement and The Last King of Scotland. As for Rogen, I just hope he's ready to start answering a lot of questions about why he chose this project right after Funny People - back-to-back comedies about terminal illness?

James McAvoy, Elizabeth Banks Team Up For Dark Comedy

Aww, this cast is so adorable: James McAvoy, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Friel and Laura Linney have all signed on for the dark comedy The Details. No real details yet on Friel or Linney's roles, but apparently the story centers on a couple, to be played by McAvoy and Banks, "who discover an infestation of raccoons in their back yard. Disagreements over how to deal with the animals lead to an escalating series of events."

There's not too much to say about this project yet besides the fact that I'm so intrigued to see Banks and McAvoy together onscreen. I never would have thought of pairing up these two, but now that I think about it, this seems like it could be really funny (and McAvoy is always very easy to watch, of course). Who else would you want to see teamed up with James McAvoy? Do you think he and Banks will do well together?

Best of British Attend Empire Film Awards

The Empire Film Awards took place in London last night, with a bevy of British acting talent attending to present and collect trophies. Best newcomer Gemma Arterton posed playfully for the photographers as she arrived, and there were some classic but unique black outfits from Joanna Page, Anne Marie Duff, Hayley Atwell, Helena Bonham Carter,Georgia Groome and Olga Kurylenko - FabUK wants to know who your best-dressed of the evening is!

The gorgeous Cillian Murphy, Gerard Butler and James McAvoy were just a few of the men adding some manjoyment to the occasion, alongside Jim Sturgess and Viggo Mortensen. The Dark Knight was the big winner of the evening with best film, director and actor as well as a special tribute award going to the late Heath Ledger.

It Looks Like Rain For James

James McAvoy showed up to the Apollo Theatre in London at the weekend, his bike helmet in his hand and posing for photographers before he entered the venue. James is currently starring alongside ex-Eastender Nigel Harman in the play Three Days Of Rain in the West End, and those two rather handsome men are more than enough to get me interested in seeing it - how about you? Read on for a little more plot info, but if you want to catch a glimpse of James on the stage you might want to book tickets sooner rather than later, as the play runs for a limited time only - until May 2nd!

Here's a little more plot info: it "explores the secrets passed from one generation to the next. When two architecture partners die, they leave their children the mysterious legacy of a house they designed. The past, including an inexplicable diary entry containing the words 'three days of rain', is delved and re-interpreted until the audience is taken back to the earlier generation (played by the same three actors) to discover the truth." Mysterious! Will you be seeing it?

Best of 2008: Favourite British Male

Throughout December you've been voting for your favourites of the year and I've been announcing the winners, and now it's time for the final award: favourite British male of 2008.

There are lots of great guys in this category, so I struggled to narrow down the choice to ten. Most of the finalists received a similar number of votes, but one edged in to the lead to be crowned winner: James McAvoy.

The Scottish actor has had an award-winning year, and I can't wait to see what he does in 2009.

Balthazar and Sienna Have a Thanksgiving Reunion

Sienna Miller met up with Balthazar Getty in London on Thursday, shopped on Friday and got dressed up to walk the red carpet with Keira Knightley at the 2008 British Independent Film Awards last night. Even though Sienna recently said she was happy being single it looks like she's back with Balthazar. They were spotted holding hands around the city, and since Balthazar missed out on spending Thanksgiving with his kids it seems like he might be serious about giving it another try with Sienna. Given her history with men it isn't surprising her relationship with the actor is on-again, although it probably doesn't help her career or please her fans.
