John Mayer, Secret Fashion Player, Take 2

You may or may not have been convinced John Mayer is a secret fashion player in my first story, so let's give it another go. Maybe a sexier photo will help? A sexier photo of Mayer with shopping bags?! I spot a Louis Vuitton bag amongst others carried by a tattooed, tan arm.

OK, down to business. In this edition, Mayer talks about how the Japanese are ahead of the fashion curve (true), gushes about a cool pair of LV pants he bought last year (was that what was in this bag?!), and continues to tell us his style tips . . .

The Japanese are so forward thinking.

"No, they are past-thinking. That’s what is so forward about it. The Japanese will put out magazines devoted to denim for the '50s. You will find full-on books, encyclopedic in nature, all about old motorcycle jackets from the '40s and '60s. So all they are really doing is going through time and finding the greatest version of something and then mass-producing."

What's in your closet?

"I have a closet that’s like the greatest collection of leather jackets and Belstaff's. I know everything down to the name of these jackets but I normally just throw on jeans and a t-shirt. I’m a big Rick Owens guy. Love Rick Owens."

"Number two. Every brand that at least has some solvency to have a store in NYC let’s say. Every single brand makes at least one garment that is worth owning. If you walk into a store because your friend wants to go into G-Star, no offense to G-star, look around and find the best G-star piece. Keep your eyes open. Don’t be a whore for labels. When it’s time, go into a store. Louis Vuitton makes one killer piece that looks nothing like Louis Vuitton every single year. Last year I bought this pair of racing pants. They are like the baggiest, coolest, cottony pants. They are billowy and have a tight hem. They are almost parachutey. Nothing like the LV design language. Everyone breaks design language one time per season. Find it, buy two of them.

"Number three. You never want to look like you bought all your stuff on the same day. Create a rotation. So you want to slowly move things into rotation, even if it means you don’t pop a tag for six months. Slowly move it into rotation. Don’t look like you are hanging out in Biscayne Bay. You know what I’m talking about? Don’t Biscayne Bay.

"Last one. It’s what I call 'long ago and hard to find.' That means, every two garments you buy every season, put them away. Don’t even think about popping them open. That means that a year and a half later when you break it out - assuming it wasn’t ever mass-produced - it will sort of juxtapose itself perfectly with the culture and the style of the day. People will say, Where’d you get that amazing jacket, and you’ll say it was hard to find two years ago. And that is how your style is untouchable."

Would you have ever guessed John Mayer has a secret fashion obsession? He's not a flashy rock star, but let's not forget he is a rock star, and therefore knows it helps to look good - no - damn good. I caught up with the curly haired cutie at New York Fashion Week, and we talked, and talked, and talked. So what did Fab and John have to talk about? Read and see!

You're more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy . . .

"Check this out: it appears as if I’m a jeans and t-shirt guy, but if I were to walk you through my closet, you’ll notice one thing about what I wear - you can never tag me. You can never say that I’m wearing this by that person. Cause I only normal wear stuff by my friends."

So your friends design clothes?

"Yeah. I don’t even want to give the brands away. Some of these brands are clothing lines so small that it's technically an artisan process and not a mass production thing. So I wear things that look like I just threw stuff on, but it’s the best version. When I’m wearing a hoodie, it looks like I just threw a hoodie on. I’m wearing what I discovered and figured out is the best hoodie I can find. And I’ll tell you, if you ever want to know the best hoodie, I know the best hoodie. The best hoodie ever made is by a company called Loopwheeler. It's all [styles] from the '40s and '50s that no one uses in America anymore. It makes one meter of fabric every hour. Do you know a store called Collette in Paris? They sell Loopwheeler. It’s the greatest stuff in the world."

"Can I give you John Mayer’s fashion tips? Will you make a blog about this? Ready? . . . Number one, in no particular order: basics are the hardest to find. The word basic always gives the impression that it’s the easiest to find. Basics are incredibly hard to find. When you find a white t-shirt, a hoodie, a pair of jeans. When you find a basic you love, buy four of them. Because you need to create a basic private stock. Because basics come and go very quickly and next season you can be sure they will change. And it will never be the same."

John Mayer May Not Have Jen but He Has His Variety Show

We're still sad about about the news that Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have broken up, but John's got plenty of other stuff to keep his mind off his recent split. He's been working hard on his new album and Twittering away, and he also gave us an exclusive update on his new variety show project. He said:

"It's still being worked on. And the way that I work - and I'm lucky enough to have this luxury - is that I don't put my name on anything until it's great. Until I think it's great. I have high quality control levels. The luxury is that I don't need to do anything anymore. This is great. When you make a lot of money doing what you love doing, if you think correctly about it, you can get to a place of luxury to where you don't ever have to put your name on something unless you think it's great. So when people ask me, 'When is the next record coming out?' I say, 'When it's great.' When people say, 'When is the TV show coming out?' I say, 'When it's great.' I know how to make a record, I don’t know how to make a TV show. So you have to account for the learning curve of making a TV show in with the chronology of putting it out."

Sounds like John is going to take the time to make sure everything is just right with his show, and we're excited to get a peek at the finished project once he has something great to share with us - even if Jennifer won't be in the audience.

Oscar-Bound John Mayer Isn't Blocking Any Blessings

John Mayer might think his suit feels like pajamas, but it certainly made him look dapper as he stood outside the Armani party in NYC last night. John recently revealed to us that he's going to the Oscars this weekend, where he'll get another chance to show off his tan after his romantic getaway with Jennifer Aniston. While this news is very exciting, he also talked how it felt to take home two trophies at the Grammys this year. He said,

"It was amazing. I didn’t have the highest output I wanted to have last year so I just hope that I can... I know I’m making a record this year. As my great friend Joy says 'Never block a blessing.' So I’m not going to block a blessing of two Grammys but I cant wait to work even harder next year, on the next record."

John Continues to Share All the Details

John Mayer was proud to show off his colorful tattoo sleeve on the December cover of Details. He's out and about talking about his latest album, Battle Studies, but in typical Mayer fashion John didn't only speak about business. Just like in his recent interview with the New York Times, John quickly got candid about his personal life. Here's more:

On his relationships with Hollywood's leading ladies: "You just never know who’s going to come into your life. To my mind, the only thing sicker than saying, 'Wow, you’re a famous person and it would do a lot for my career to go out with you,' is to say, 'Wow, you’re a famous person and I like you and all, but I can’t do that to my career.' I don’t think either of those is a good option."
On his unexpected collaboration with country star Taylor Swift: "I don’t know if you know, but I’m not exactly Bob Dylan - I’m already a pop musician . . . I want to reach as many people as possible."
His music vs. his celebrity persona: "Sometimes I feel like I do two things for a living. I make records and I talk to people. The record is much, much better than any interview I can give - you’ll walk away from the record liking me a hell of a lot more than you would walking away from an interview."

John Mayer Talks TwitPics and Decides to Get a Kindle 2

When PopSugar recently chatted with John Mayer about attending the Oscars with Jennifer Aniston, and he even opened up about his Twitter habits and his new found interest in TwitPic. Here's what he had to say about it:

"So the other night I was sitting up in bed because I couldn’t sleep. And I found out that if you go to a TwitPic, whatever one it is, and if you just start messing with the sequential order of the link, so if its like a1m2 go to a1m3, and it's someone else’s photograph. So we just started Twittering."

He even admitted to putting up a picture on TwitPic and claiming it was a friend:

"We were finding other peoples TwitPics. Look at TwitPic.com with a savvy eye, and you’ll see American life at its most amazing. You’ll see through a lens of people you’d never meet. This is my brother Doug. This is. . . I’m taking a bike ride with Eric Childs. It’s ridiculous. I’m trying to find a new frontier for Twitter. There’s an art form somewhere there, I don’t know what it is yet."

I love how John is becoming just as enamored with Twitter as Ashton. Yesterday John even posted a Tweet announcing that he's going to pick up a Kindle 2. "It takes something that costs 300 bucks to get me to read a 1.50 cent paper on it." I completely agree. I'm the one still hoping and wishing for a price drop.

Fab Blab: January Says Crazy, John Says Pajamas at the Armani Store Opening Party

Was I ready for the Armani party? Affirmative. After getting manicured and coiffed at the Waldorf Astoria Fashion Week Suite, I couldn't have timed a little pampering better because the event was pretty insane. The star-studded party celebrated the new Fifth Avenue store containing all the Armani brands under one roof. It may sound excessive in dire times, but Armani declared, “One must go on. [This store] is an act of courage and faith towards America, a country that has supported me from the very beginning,” he said. “I think an entrepreneur should demonstrate a certain degree of bravery, even in difficult times, and I certainly wasn’t going to change my plans.”At one point, a star or star editor was in every direction. I got a chance to say hi again to Mad Men beauty January Jones. Looking sirenesque in a beaded LRD, she yelled "Great to see you. It's crazy here!" She was going to attend a couple more fashion shows today and then she was outtie. The best quickie quote of the night, though, was John Mayer. When asked how his Armani suit felt, he gushed, "It feels - a great suit feels like a pair of pajamas. And I could sleep in this thing. Thinking about going fetal right here, in the building.” Lastly, a couple high profilers slipped by me, but I had to mention how decadent in Armani Victoria Beckham looked.

Sexy Victoria Joins a Handsome Crowd For a Giving Armani

It was a star-studded black carpet last night at Armani's Fifth Ave store opening in NYC. Victoria Beckham looked stunning in her sparkly dress, showing lots of skin despite the chilly temperatures. Leonardo DiCaprio smiled in his suit as Chace Crawford posed with the main man of the evening. Along with the amazing new huge store to celebrate, Armani donated $1 million to NYC public schools. Inside the party, John Mayer - who we are excited to officially see at the Oscars - chatted with Chace about their love for Armani suits. Josh Hartnett told us he was "honored and very excited" that he recently won London Newcomer of the Year for his West End debut. Rachel Zoe and January Jones laughed and talked with each other as everyone continued to enjoy all of the Fashion Week festivities.
