Johnny Depp Steps Out to Appreciate Art

Johnny Depp has been laying low as usual recently, but he smiled and posed at Frank Pictures Gallery where the work of artists Kellisimone Waits and Tiffany Trenda was being shown in Santa Monica on Sunday. Kellisimone's father, Tom Waits, is a friend of Johnny's and a costar in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Johnny hit the stage to accept an award and hand one out to Keith Richards at last month's Scream Awards, but otherwise Depp's been hard at work on a handful of movies including the anticipated Alice in Wonderland - check out the awesome new poster for it here! He's also rumored to be taking on a new role in The Tourist that comes with a sexy costar, Angelina Jolie. No matter what Johnny's up to, he always keeps it interesting from his movie choices to his signature style.

Who Should Play Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorsese's Biopic?

And then there were three. Back in May I asked you all who you would choose to play Frank Sinatra in the upcoming biopic, and Martin Scorsese reportedly has narrowed it down to Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and George Clooney. Apparently Scorsese's first choice is his muse DiCaprio, while Universal Pictures would like to see Depp in the role.

As for Clooney - he's the top pick for Tina Sinatra, who would like the movie to focus more on the more charming side of her father's personality rather than the more gritty aspects of his life. Rest assured that whoever snags the role won't have to sing - the music will feature Sinatra's original voice. So between these three guys, tell me - who should play Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorsese's biopic?

Pirate's Booty: Women Flock to Somali Port to Marry Pirates

It may be wedding season at Sugar, but elsewhere circumstance and desperation still send women down the aisle . . . or to the docks. In like, say, Somalia!

In an interview today on CNN's American Morning, TJ Holmes found that Somali women are flocking to the port town of Bosaso in hopes of marrying a pirate. Arghh. I'm going to assume these pirates are more like the men pictured above and less Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. So what's the appeal? Well, money - pirates have it.

In fact, women want to marry pirates for the same reasons men become them: they want to escape the hopelessness, poverty, lawlessness, and civil war that pervade the streets of Somalia. Can you blame them?

Julia Is Hollywood's Most Famous Housewife

Julia Roberts looks stunning all sprawled out in a dream-like photoshoot for the December Issue of Vanity Fair. We got a preview of the cover girl talking about her love for Danny Moder and appreciation for Natalie Portman, but she also dished about the environment, balancing her life between her family and career and who she wants to share the big screen with. Here are more highlights:

On who she'd like to star in a movie with::
"I would like to work with Johnny Depp. I've known him a long time. I think he's so interesting and I think we look alike in a funny way. So Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp and I will play brother and sister in something."
On talking to her kids about her job:
"I don't. I haven't had to. I just say, 'Mommy's going to work,' and they know that my work somehow involves a trailer. But when I played Joanne Herring, we had done some portraits of me, copying pictures of Joanne, to use around her house. So I brought home this picture of me in this emerald-green gown, and I have these big diamonds on and the nails and the whole thing. The picture was sitting on the dining-room table, and Finn and Hazel came to dinner, and Hazel said, 'Oh, look at that picture. Cuckoo Mommy.' I couldn't believe she even knew it was me."

Sounds like Julia's little ones are already smart little cookies just like their mom. As for working with Johnny we hope Hollywood is listening because the two of them together would be box office gold.

Johnny Is Okay With Being Weird

Sweetheart Johnny Depp put on his best freaky Sweeney Todd face for this week's EW cover. Yesterday we read his amazingly sweet quotes about his daughter and working with his friend Tim, and now here's more from his awesome interview. Also, how cute is he in that picture with Tim Burton? Love them. Here's more:

EW: Did you let your family in on your Sweeney singing practice?
Depp: When I was doing the demos in Los Angeles, I came home and played it for Vanessa. That was one of the more frightening moments. You go I'm gonna fall on my face.
EW: What did they make of it?
Depp: They said, "Is that you?"
EW: Do the often weigh in on your performances?
Depp: After Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, [my family] went to see it. I hadn't seen it. I was waiting at home, and they came back. And my daughter came up and went, "You're really weird."
EW: So you haven't seen Charlie since then?
I still haven't. I find it so difficult to watch anything I'm in. I don't like to be aware of myself in that way. I love discovering moments on the set. But I can't stand the idea that I have to see it later.

Johnny is definitely a little bit weird, but in the best possible way. It's too bad that he doesn't like to watch himself on screen, because he's pretty great when he's up there.

Sweeney Todd's LA Premiere & Facial Hair Convention

Last night some amazingly talented men came out to the premiere of Sweeney Todd . . . and then there was Wilmer Valderrama. Don't get me wrong - he's actually a successful entrepreneur in Hollywood. My personal favorite is Handy Manny (no really, Katie loves it). Yet, obviously he is a bit out of place when paired next to the talented a-listers like Johnny Depp and Steven Spielberg. One thing he has in common with these men tonight - the fancy facial hair. Seriously, what's up with all the hairy men? Somehow we left off Johnny and Tim from our favorite BFF poll, but these two are certainly the most creative of the bunch. We can't wait to see their latest imaginative world they created in Sweeney Todd.

Johnny Depp Is a Musical Rolling Stone

Johnny Depp, your four-years running People's Choice Favorite Male Movie Star, showed off that chest that makes the ladies swoon on the cover of Rolling Stone. In the magazine, the topic at hand is his musical career rather than acting, since he made such a splash showing off his pipes in Sweeney Todd. Plus, he's been playing the guitar since he was a kid. Here are highlights:

How did listening to music become making music?
When I was twelve, I talked my mom into picking up a Decca electric guitar for me for twenty-five dollars. It had a little blue plush amp. And then, this is horrible, the first thing I did was steal a Mel Bay chord book. I went to this store, stuffed it down my pants and walked out. It had pictures - that's why I needed it so badly, because it was immediate gratification. If I could match those photographs, then I was golden. I conquered it in days. I locked the bedroom door, didn't leave, and taught myself how to play chords. I started learning songs by ear.

What was your first band?
When I was about thirteen, I got together with some other kids in the neighborhood. This one guy had a bass, we knew a guy who had a PA system, we made our own lights. It was really ramshackle and great. We'd play at people's backyard parties. Everything from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Cheap Trick to Devo - and "Johnny B. Goode" was the closer.

You've got that wistful look in your eyes.
You're thirteen years old and you're playing rock & roll. Loud. Poorly. But somebody's letting you do it in their back yard. And it was absolute perfection. It was freedom. Right off the bat, there was no question: I had found my future.

Once a performer, always a performer. And it sounds like the world just can't get enough of Mr. Depp. Time to get the old band back together?

PopUK Gift Guide: Book Loving Babe

Today I'm bringing you my final gift ideas for female friends and sisters, before I move onto pressies for the men in your life next week. This gift guide is for those pals of yours who love to read and then compare the book with the film adaptation.

First up I've got The Secret Life of Bees, about female solidarity in segregated 1960s South Carolina: the film version hits our cinemas next week. If your friend loves left-field literature, go for my October Book Club choice Choke. In cinemas this week, it's a hilarious story about a sex-addicted colonial-village-working con artist. For a non-fiction off-the-wall comedy, choose Danny Wallace's Yes Man: Jim Carrey's bringing it to the big screen on Boxing Day.

Vampire lovers will be pleased with a copy of Twilight, another December film release, and your friend can stay ahead of the game if you buy her a copy of The Time Traveler's Wife, The Lovely Bones or The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic: she can read the novels before the film versions' 2009 releases. Classics also have 2009 film adaptations, like F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (with Brad Pitt in the eponymous role come January) and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (which will star Colin Firth and Ben Barnes).

Buy your buddy Revolutionary Road and The Reader, and by the time the films are released in January she'll be ready to make comparisons. Kate Winslet stars in both, alongside Leo DiCaprio in the former, and Ralph Fiennes in the latter. The Private Lives of Pippa Lee by Rebecca Miller also has a starry-cast film version out soon.

Finally, for the child at heart, I've got three kiddies' tales which have that crossover appeal as well as forthcoming film versions: Cornelia Funke's fantasy Inkheart, and Kate DiCamillo's The Tale of Despereaux, both come to the big screen in December, while Alice in Wonderland is a wonderful read at any time, and Tim Burton has a film version coming out in 2010 with an all-star cast including Johnny Depp.

Most of these books are on my list for future PopUK Book Club reads, so your friend can join in our discussions when the book club resumes later next year.

Johnny Depp Gives and Receives

Most of you were missing the Golden Globes as much as we were last night, and one of the biggest letdowns was that we couldn't see our favorite stars accept their trophies. It seems that Johnny Depp was also sad about missing the opportunity to make an acceptance speech, and decided to release a full statement thanking his family, friends and co-stars for his first ever Golden Globe win.

Johnny is obviously very appreciative of his first Golden Globe, but he's still giving thanks for another gift he received last year. Yesterday he donated $2 million to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, where his daughter Lily-Rose was treated during her health scare back in March. He's been a frequent visitor of the hospital, reading the patients bedtime stories and inviting doctors to his movie premieres. Could he be any more amazing? We're so happy for Johnny and his big win, and hope that maybe he'll get the chance to make a real acceptance speech come Oscar time.
