Kate Gears Up For Movie Month Mayhem At GMTV

Kate Winslet was at GMTV this morning looking fresh faced in the cold winter air as she left the studios after her appearance on the show. January is going to be a busy month for Kate as she has two movies coming out, the first is The Reader out on January 2, in which she stars as a woman who gets involved with a younger man and a decade later reconnects with him as she defends herself in a war crime trial. The other is Revolutionary Road which, as I've mentioned before, I am really looking forward to. She reunites with Leonardo DiCaprio for the movie of Richard Yates' fantastic novel, which is released in the UK on January 30. I love Kate, and I'm really looking forward to seeing her in both releases, are you?

First Glance: Revolutionary Road - See It or Skip It?

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are reunited for the first time since Titanic in a new movie adaptation of Richard Yates' fantastic novel Revolutionary Road.

The story focuses on a young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s, as they struggle to come to terms with their personal problems along with raising their two children. It's a dramatic but fantastic book and - judging from this trailer - the film looks set to capture that too.

It's set for release in the UK on January 30th 2009, but what do you think - will you see it or will you skip it?

The Holiday: Frothy and Fun As a Cup of Cocoa

Holiday romantic comedies are bound to be a bit cheesy. When the movie is actually called The Holiday, cheesiness is almost guaranteed. But this latest romp from director Nancy Meyers, which hits theaters tomorrow, rises to the top of its frothy, feel-good genre. The self-aware storyline centers on two women-movie-trailer producer Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and British weddings columnist Iris (Kate Winslet)-who swap houses for the holidays to get away from their less-than-satisfactory love lives. Amanda, who sleeps with her Blackberry and has just ruined another relationship with her workaholism, goes to live in Iris's quaint Surrey cottage, while Iris takes up residence at Amanda's palatial LA haunt to forget her three-year unrequited love.

In the beginning, that scenario lends itself to too many scenes of lonely women talking to themselves; the ones featuring Diaz's high-strung Amanda are nearly intolerable. But when a trio of men enter the picture-including Iris's sexy, suntanned brother Graham (Jude Law)-things get a lot more interesting, so read more

Shortly after arriving in LA, Iris meets two very different men: a witty film-score composer named Miles (played with rare and refreshing subtlety by Jack Black) and Arthur (Eli Wallach), her octogenarian neighbor who also happens to be a legendary screenwriter. Back in England, Amanda makes the acquaintance of the hunky Graham when he shows up drunk at his sister's cottage, not knowing that she's gone on holiday.

To add drama to many of Amanda's scenes, the director employs a clever device: voice-over narration by that ubiquitous movie-trailer guy. Iris and Arthur, meanwhile, spend lots of time discussing the common conventions of script writing. That film-centric subplot on both continents gives the movie a sort of cheeky self-awareness about its own filmic-ness. That way, when the inevitable romantic-comedy cliches and convenient plot twists sneak in, it's more amusing than annoying.

I don't know what's gotten into me: maybe it's the holiday spirit or that my viewing of "The Holiday" comes on the heels of watching one of the worst romantic comedies I've even seen, Trust the Man, on a recent plane ride. (It wasn't even mentioned in the in-flight magazine, which makes me suspect that we were being subjected to a bizarre social experiment.) But implausibly neat and tidy plot aside, the way the characters interact in this movie rings very true to life. Particularly in the Iris/Los Angeles subplot, The Holiday addresses some very universal relationship truths in a clever way. I can't really say the same for the somewhat silly Amanda/Graham romance back in England, but at least there I had the Jude Law eye candy to keep me interested.

This is totally what James Cameron's Titanic would have sounded like directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Samuel "mother effing" L. Jackson. Not sure why this guy is all over the Internet now, but I like it! Titanic totally would have benefited from this adrenaline shot to the eardrums! (Needless to say, languagewise, it's NSFW.)

Casual Kate Winslet's In Italy, Revealing All About Airbrushing

Kate Winslet and her hubby Sam Mendes arrived in Italy yesterday, looking casual at the airport. Kate looks almost unrecognisable in her England cap and white framed sunglasses! Kate's looking glam on the cover of American Harper's Bazaar this month and she talks about her image, and seeing airbrushed photos of herself. Kate said, "I have wrinkles here [on her forehead], which are very evident, I will particularly say when I look at movie posters: 'You guys have airbrushed my forehead. Please can you change it back?' I’d rather be the woman they’re saying 'She’s looking older' than 'She’s looking stoned'." Always quick to admit many images are retouched, she also said:

"[Young women] look at all of us, myself included, on these magazine covers and they think 'My God, how does she get skin like that?' And I can tell you, I have so many blemishes under this make-up that have been so fabulously covered, I promise you... [On the red carpet] our knickers will still go up our a** at the most inappropriate moment. And we’ll still want to flick them out, but you can’t because someone is going to catch you."

Kate Helps Sam, Maya, and John Send Off Away We Go

The cast of Away We Go and some special loved ones hit the red carpet at a screening in NYC last night. Kate Winslet looked gorgeous in her LBD out to support her husband, director Sam Mendes. In the movie Maya Rudolph plays a pregnant woman, and her real-life baby bump is growing as she prepares for number two. John Krasinski looked cute smiling with his costars after spending the weekend visiting his family and showing off the film back in his hometown Boston.

Kate Winslet and Slumdog Win Multiple Golden Globes!

The Golden Globe Awards took place last night, and brought some fantastic success for our British nominees! Kate Winslet won two awards, for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for movies Revolutionary Road and The Reader. Meanwhile the fabulous Slumdog Millionaire continued its success from the Critics' Choice Awards by winning four Golden Globes including Best Picture (Drama), Sally Hawkins won Best Actress for Happy-Go-Lucky, and Tom Wilkinson picked up a Supporting Actor award for his role in TV series John Adams.

Other winners last night included 30 Rock, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Mad Men and The Wrestler, Heath Ledger won a posthumous Supporting Actor award for The Dark Knight, Colin Farrell won for In Bruges, and Steven Spielberg picked up the Lifetime Achievement award.

Everyone's Got The Blues At The SAG Awards!

Kate Winslet and Slumdog Millionaire continued their winning streak at the SAG Awards last night, with Kate winning Best Supporting Actress for The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire winning Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Hugh Laurie took home a trophy for his work in House, with Sally Field, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and the cast of Mad Men also winning TV acting gongs. Sean Penn, Meryl Streep and Heath Ledger well deservedly won the rest of the film acting awards! Emily Blunt, Freida Pinto and Kate Winslet all looked beautiful in cool shades of colour on the red carpet, while Hugh and Dev Patel looked handsome in their suits and bow ties.

Kate Keeps the Berlin Film Fun Going Before the Oscars

Kate Winslet waved to her fans earlier today on her way into a photo call for The Reader during the Berlin Film Festival. After posing for pictures, she sat down with her costars for a press conference and then got fancy to hit the premiere alongside Ralph Fiennes. Kate's up for an Oscar for her role in the WWII drama, but she's pragmatic about the odds of winning since she's been nominated five times before but never has won. She said, "I'm so used to it, having gone through it before and having lost so many times. Being in that losing state is something I'm much more comfortable in, in a funny kind of a way." Kate's wise not to get her hopes too high, but after all her award season success so far, her sixth time might be lucky. You could be too - fill out your ballot and enter to win a year of movies!
